ATN Podcast 358: Did that really happen?

Listen, this podcast is fun to put together and we think and hope that it is informative, but we are always trying to do more. So this week, since we’ve finally had some games played, we’re adding a couple of new wrinkles to the D3football.com Around the Nation podcast.

First of all, since this season the at-large bids and the seedings are basically all going to be done by computers, we figured we’d better get you all ready for that, so we’ve invited back our Math Correspondent, Logan Hansen. In his Football Analytics 3:01 segment, he’s going to spend exactly 3 minutes, 1 second of your time talking about who is key in the running for those top eight spots in the new NCAA Power Index, that thing we call NPI. We’ll tell you more about what that means. He’ll also spotlight some of the big games — key leverage games and games that will shape the playoff picture.

When you ask Patrick and Greg what the most shocking result was from Week 1 and they both say the same thing, that says a lot. It’s a quick run through the top games from this past week, plus the implications and some of the history.

We also hand out game balls to the top performers, pick out the stats of the week, and run through region by region to get some of the other stories you might have missed. And since that didn’t seem to be enough, Greg and Patrick have to pick one more region to tell one more story about on the fly. At a roll of the dice, you never know what they might end up talking about — even a JV game?

Plus we chat with Calvin head coach Trent Figg, just minutes after his team defeated Oberlin in dominating fashion in the program’s first-ever football game. There’s that and so much more in this week’s podcast, so give it a listen!

ATN Podcast 329: A new conference, state of NIL in D3, and a crazy idea for the ASC

Nobody at the American Southwest Conference is talking on the record — heck, there basically is nobody at the American Southwest Conference since they showed their commissioner the door, and two more schools left their all-sports membership not all that long ago.

This is desperate times calling for desperate measures for the ASC, and if you thought our last idea was a crazy one (Super Region 10 conference, anyone?), just wait until you hear what’s next. Pat Coleman and Greg Thomas discuss what options are left for the ASC, or instead, when the conference might lose its automatic bid, assuming the four remaining football programs can remain together.

While we wait for the ASC to lose an automatic bid, we have a new conference starting this fall with the Landmark Conference. When D3football.com broke the news of this, back in February 2022, it was understood that the Landmark would have a football bid right away, and we talk with Susquehanna coach Tom Perkovich about the new conference, and having been on the wrong side of the at-large bubble a couple of seasons ago. Now that Perkovich has some control over his team’s schedule, he has some great matchups lined up and he talks about why he scheduled the teams he has.

Plus, we are joined by Karl Barkley, who runs @D3Direct, which you can find on most social media platforms. His goal is to shed light on the D-III recruiting process for incoming student-athletes, but also to talk about what D-III student-athletes can do with their Name, Image and Likeness rights. Nobody is signing deals for hundreds of thousands of dollars, but with a little hustle, D-III guys are finding ways to benefit from this NCAA legislation. He has examples and suggestions.

And we’re joined by Riley Zayas of True to the CruWe talk about some of the great non-conference games that Texas schools are taking part in this season. Plus, Greg talks about where the Landmark Conference might land in his Division III football conference rankings, plus more.

ATN Podcast 316: All eyes on Platteville, plus regional rankings

Some things we can’t seem to avoid talking about every week this season:

  • The Cortaca Jug game in Yankee Stadium
  • The University of Wisconsin-Platteville

This week, Platteville made headlines again, and for the second week in a row, extremely positive headlines as the Pioneers shook up the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a 17-14 win against then-No. 3 UW-Whitewater. What in the name of Dan Arnold is going on with this program? How did the Pioneers go from losing back-to-back games by an average of 40 points, to these two consecutive wins against River Falls and Whitewater?

We’ve had these questions. We assume you’ve had these questions. So we ask these questions. We ask them of Ryan Munz, the Platteville head coach, who is our guest on Fast 5, plus maybe a couple of extra minutes at the top of the podcast.

Plus, it’s really time to dig into how the playoffs are set up in Division III football. If you’re new to Division III, this is a must-listen. Even if you’ve been following for a few years, a refresher might be helpful and yes, some things have changed, even if they are small things.

In all, 69 schools merit serious mention in this week’s podcast. That includes the way in which Cortland beat Utica, how North Central handled Washington U., Austin College and Beloit breaking long losing streaks, not to mention Bowdoin pulling off an unexpected victory as well.

In addition, Pat and Greg hand out game balls, spotlight the unexpected in Stat of the Week, make guesses about Week 9 games and more. There’s a list in small type at the bottom of this page of all the teams that are talked about.

Fan question in the mailbag from @mikey_shoultz: What team from the bottom 10 ranked conferences in your conference rankings has the best chance to win a playoff game?

Pat Coleman and Greg Thomas talk about it all in the latest D3football.com Around the Nation Podcast. The D3football.com Around the Nation Podcast is a regular conversation covering the wide range of Division III football.
