Hall call for Rebimbas?

With Seton Hall University selecting Bobby Gonzalez as the new coach for its men’s basketball program, Adam Zagoria of NorthJersey.com suggests the Pirates look at former player and current William Paterson head man Jose Rebimbas for an assistant position.

Zagoria touts Rebimbas’ talent as a recruiter, including drawing Horace Jenkins back into basketball, and his success at the NJAC school. William Paterson won the conference tournament and finished the 2005-2006 season ranked No. 24 with a 23-8 record.

Gonzalez apparently hasn’t reached out to Rebimbas yet and he is not necessarily looking to leave WPUNJ. But it might be tough to say no to his alma mater. He played on Seton Hall’s 1989 national finals team.

If Rebimbas does make the move from Wayne to South Orange, New Jersey, he’ll have his work cut out for him as a recruiter. Zagoria reports that SHU has “no recruits signed for next season.” WPUNJ is expected to return most of its key contributors from last year’s tournament team.

Incidentally Gonzalez is not completely unfamiliar with Division III. The Binghamton, NY native graduated from Buffalo State College in 1986.

  1. I wonder if Rebimbas couldn’t aim a little higher up the ladder. He has a similar résumé to Tony Shaver (from Hampden-Sydney to head coach at William & Mary) and a better one than Doug Davalos.

  2. I wonder that also, I thought SHU should have interviewed him for the job. With Gonzales leaving Manhattan there could still be interviews offered. I think he will move to D-I at some point and I think he will be a successful coach, he is a good recruiter and teacher.

  3. I have some good sources that say if he is asked, he will seriously consider it.

(Jose…don’t call me this week to divulge my source I’m out of the country 🙂

Jose needs to move up. Hes done all he can at D-III and he did it early and has kept that team in contention in the NJAC almost every year. Hes shown all of us how he can recruit. So why not now move on to a place he knows well?

Unfortunately working with Gonzalez could be an issue, as he hasn’t been to popular with his former collegues in the MAAC. Does Jose want to deal with that? I guess to move up its the whole catch 22. But in my opinion Jose should and will get a head job at D-I. If this is his shot to go back “home” then all the BS with Bobby G may be worth it.

  4. Not all the coaches in the NJAC like Jose so he should be used to that. He also stresses the same type of defense that Gonzales likes to use, he would be a good fit.

  5. I heard on the local radio today that Bob Leckie has stepped down at St. Peters. I know they offered the job to Charles Brown a long time ago and Teddy Fiore was their coach. They are not afraid to hire from the D-III ranks. If they are smart they will look at Rembibas and McBreen both. Both are good coaches and extremely good recruiters and McBreen is tight with most of the Hudson County HS coaches.
