You may remember us writing about Oglethorpe coach Ron Sattele, or us interviewing him on Hoopsville or the Southern Hospitality tour.
Back in December, Sattele told me about many things, including his trip to the 2007 Final Four in which he refused to drive the interstate.
So while the NCAA will be flying Sattele and the Stormy Petrels to the Final Four, you may be curious: If Sattele were driving his Porsche, how would he go? Look no further — it may not be MSN Mappoint’s shortest possible distance, but it’s sure a complicated route.

Google maps is so much easier to use than MSN.Mappoint!
And he can stop for coffee at Centre and Anderson on this route. Misses Manchester by a few miles.
This is the way to go. My wife and I drove from Massachusetts to Chicago using no limited access highways a few years ago and saw some fascinating country. The biggest challenge is not overdoing it at some of the small town restaurants with excellent and abundant food!
I told him in the interview back in December that I love the concept, just haven’t the time to do it. 🙁
I have this thought, for example, of driving U.S. 20 and stopping at every D-III school in every town I go through. Hit all the Worcester, Mass., schools, Williams, all the way through to Dubuque and Loras, etc. (Not sure if 20 hits anything else west of Dubuque.)
Don’t know if anyone else noticed but the purple line is inaccurate in Michigan at least. The route stated above takes you through Paw Paw and Allegan, not along the lakeshore.
It would be fun to try.
Probably my fault — I generated the route on Sunday but only got around to writing the post yesterday and that’s when I got the map code.

Pat;
It’s the “Back Road To Holland”. Some think that’s how our little Stormy Petrels ended up in Holland. But obviously they didn’t know that this Southern style Petrel migrate North in the winter and they end up in places like snowbound Crestview Hills, Ky, Union, NJ, and finally in Holland, Mi. The powers to be seem never to let them nest in the South. It’s just “On the Road Again” with Willie Nelson but now we are the Flying Petrels and not the Back Road Petrels.
We look forward to our time in Holland and all the kind folks from Hope College.
Coach… while you are flying, I realize a bus will be involved at some point. Here is hoping you have a bit better luck with the bus! The only blow out you need is in a win!
Good luck… and some day I might take your mentallity on a trip to Maine… though I am not sure how good a trip up into New England without being on an interstate would be! 🙂
Then there is Interstate Highway 20 for those limited access folks…
West to East
McMurry and Hardin-Simmons in Abilene TX
University of Dallas just 15 miles to the north in Irving

Lets not forget that this is a man who didn’t receive a single vote for Coach of the Year in his conference. Congratulations to Coach Sattele and all of the Oglethorpe women’s basketball team for an incredible season!
