Heading to Ohio

Ready for basketball season to get back into gear this weekend and tomorrow I leave for Ohio to see Wooster’s Mose Hole Tournament. We open the first night with UW-La Crosse vs. Calvin and Ohio Northern at Wooster. Should be a doozy of a weekend.

I don’t have time to write a lot about this now but I’ll be blogging occasionally on the subject and we will be broadcasting. Hope to see people there.

  1. We look forward to having you here, Pat. I’m still searching my atlas for a potential side trip to “Coleman, Ohio,” but so far without success.

Oh, and don’t expect Ohio drivers to drive on the shoulder to let you pass. 🙂

  2. We need a clever name for this trip. Building on the “Tour de Tejas,” I suggest the “Tour d’Ohio,” which could be shortened to the HomerSimpsonesque “Tour d’Oh!” 🙂

  3. Funny thing — I was pondering such names during my Texan time.

Observing Ohio (not really touring, per se, just one school and two teams)
    Meandering across Minnesota
    Inciting Illinois
    Va-moosing through Maine
    etc. 🙂

  4. Listening to the first half of the Wooster/ONU game, it sounds like there could be a great finish.

That’s one of the loudest gyms I’ve ever been in. What? I SAID THAT’S ONE OF THE LOUDEST GYMS I’VE EVER BEEN IN.

    Inquiring minds want to know…

    * Why did Wooster play ONU instead of UW-Lax or Calvin in the opener? Usually the host looks for the weakest opponent and plays them in a tournament. Did they expect Calvin or Lax would be better than ONU (understandable)? Were they trying to add a regional game (maybe)?

I suspect there’s a reason since coaches usually think about this stuff a fair amount.

    * Who is the last team to beat Wooster and Wittenberg in the same season as ONU is trying to do tonight?

Yes, I know the answer — but do you?

Incidentally, if you’re in the mood for more hoops after this game, No. 13 JHU and No. 11 Miss College play later tonight in California.

  5. I think I know the answer, but I’m kind of a homer for that question, so I’ll let it ride. I’ll just say that, if it’s who I think it is, their wins over Wooster and Wittenberg were a lot more meaningful than ONU’s were this season.

It was a great crowd (I’d guess about 2500), especially considering that the students are all on break. Of course, ONU and Calvin (and to a lesser extent LaX) brought good crowds, and that added.

  6. As I suspect Dave knows, JCU turned the trick in 2002-2003 with wins against Wooster and Wittenberg during their run to the National Semifinals.

By the way, that Miss College/Johns Hopkins game started at 7 PM eastern time. The Chocs rocked JHU 75-51.

  7. I think Wooster is taking a page out of the QOWI playbook, like it did with playing Baldwin-Wallace in the opening round last year instead of Thiel.

I talked to Steve Moore after the game to encourage him not to give up the ghost on aggressive scheduling even though they’ve lost the first round two years in a row.

  8. I turned to the MissCollege broadcast after the ONU-COW game. It was hard for me to get the flavor of the game by that time, but it seemed that Miss College’s athleticism just took JHU apart. It also appears that Coach Jones has moved Timothy Broomfield, the 6’8″ Senior F/G, out to the perimeter. Broomfield had 10 points, 7 rebs, 7 blocks, 4 assists and 3 steals. Broomfield may have a “wing span” of closer to 7′ and is quite agile. (Pat Coleman may remember his notes from the McM-MissColl game that he saw on NOv 30th.)

MissColl led by 30-8 with 4:35 remaining. JHU tried liberal substitution and could not find a “hot” player.
