Refs are people too …

… and they had athletic careers and the like, for the most part. As proof of that fact, here’s a piece from Maine’s Brunswick Times Record, detailing one official’s path to calling a Final Four game. Great piece, worth a read.

  1. Good story Pat. She makes a fantastic comment about wanting the respect of coaches and the desire for coaches to be glad to see her on the game. It’s advice that I don’t think a lot of officials heed. I think a large number of officials don’t seek the respect of the players and coaches, but want the respect to be one-sided. They almost seem to want to invoke a “fear” mentality from players and coaches. A lot of them think they are bigger than the game. You see that at all levels.

Officials at all levels would do well by following her goals as to what she wants and strives for from officiating.

  2. This is a great example of “giving back to the game” in a positive manner. We need more good officials that do it for the right reason in every sport. Hopefully, more ex-players will see that as a way to stay involved and enhance the game.
