Rivalries rev up

The last weekend of January brings us Division III’s biggest rivalry as Calvin and Hope meet in Grand Rapids this afternoon at 2 pm EST.

In addition to watching the game on CSTV (if you have it), there are plenty of other ways to track the game.

Division III’s second-best rivalry (in my opinion) also continues today as the undefeated No. 16 Amherst women travel to Williams (13-5) at 2 pm EST followed by the No. 3 Amherst men playing No. 10 Williams at 4 pm EST. The Lord Jeffs won the first meeting at home 87-80, but this one is even bigger since it counts in conference. Plus, a win here by the Lord Jeffs may vault them to No. 1 in the country given last night’s loses by No. 1 Rochester and No. 2 Brandeis.

  1. No. 16 Amherst 37
    Williams 28 – Half

Sarah Lehman is a perfect 5 for 5 from the field to pace Amherst.

    Calvin 33
    No. 5 Hope 32 – 32:57, 1st

Hope trailed by as many as nine but Vanderheide has gone nuts (18 points, 9 for 11) for the Flying Dutchmen. This game run longer than other 2 pm starts because of the TV timeouts.

  2. Calvin 44
    No. 5 Hope 36 – Half

The three guards — Veldhouse, Smith and Griffin — have combined for 31 points to lead the Knights. From the Hope broadcast, the atmosphere sounds outstanding. At some point I’d love to see one of these games live.

    In other games of note…

    No. 16 Virginia Wesleyan 23
    No. 19 Randolph-Macon 21 – Half

Tyler Fantin leads the Marlins with nine points in a low scoring first half.

    Oneonta State 28
    No. 22 Cortland State 24 – 16:00, 2nd

The Red Dragons of 0-State are 7-1 in women’s SUNYAC play.

  3. No. 16 Amherst 48
    Williams 49 — 7:00, 2nd

Going with a taller lineup, the Ephs have rallied to take the lead.

    No. 5 Hope 48
    Calvin 51 — 15:45, 2nd

    Three point game there, too.

Meanwhile Va Wes opened the second half on a 13-0 run and leads 44-27. Cortland State has an eight-point lead on O-State.

  4. Cortland State closes out Oneonta State 63-51. Nice comeback for the ranked Red Dragons. My computer gets a bit of reprieve as I close one of many live stat/broadcast windows. 🙂

  5. No. 5 Hope 61
    Calvin 59 — 10:25, 2nd

    Williams 59
    No. 16 Amherst 54 — 1:53, 2nd

    Jeffs in trouble.

  6. Williams 64
    No. 16 Amherst 59 – F

Amherst goes cold in the second and loses its first game of the season. That leaves us with three undefeated women’s teams — No. 1 Hope, No. 2 Howard Payne (who beat Concordia-Austin) and No. 5 Thomas More (who beat Bethany).

Meanwhile Calvin and Hope are headed toward another fantastic finish

    No. 5 Hope 74
    Calvin 74 — 3:17, 2nd

  7. No. 5 Hope 79
    Calvin 76

Caleb Veldhouse has two tries to tie it but misses them. Hope survives as the “Dew Crew goes absolutely nutty,” per Hope radio.

No. 19 Va Wes was never threatened after turning a 2-point lead into a 15-point lead to start the second half. The Marlins beat No. 19 Randolph-Macon 54-38.
