Watching the video for this afternoon’s game, and it’s a rare full house for a Sunday early game in the UAA. Having seen some of these early tips in the UAA and SCAC, the atmosphere can sometimes be a little sterile. However, I got this tip from Rochester SID Dennis O’Donnell earlier, talking about coach Mike Neer after Friday night’s game:
After the game, Neer got on the microphone. He thanked the crowd for coming out and then said: “Sleep is over-rated. Be here Sunday at Noon.” Big roar from the students. Now we have to see if they listen.
Looks like they have. Enjoy the live video, audio, and scoreboard updates and feel free to post your observations here as well.
Brandeis on a 10-0 run fueled by four Rochester turnovers and has taken an early 12-5 lead.
Back-to-back buckets for the Yellowjackets, in case anyone was worried. 🙂
Alright, we’re at the half and Rochester leads 40-32. My vantage point is fairly limited, of course — limited to about a 320×240 video screen, but I can tell when a player is wide open and the Yellowjackets have had a few situations like that this afternoon. They’re moving the ball around well and as Brandeis collapses on Onyiriuka and Ndubizu someone is open on the perimeter.
With Hollins and Hill in foul trouble early on (combined two points), Brandeis has struggled offensively. Olson 4-7, 2-3 in the first half, leads the Judges with 12.
I’m digging this game…the videocast on Rochester’s site is pretty hip. Dominiak’s four point play was ridiculous and i can see why U of R is #1. Their two big guys are dominant compared to anything else i’ve seen in D3; that paired with quick, good shooting players is killer at any level.
They’ve impressed me so far. I think we’ve come to a consensus the past couple weeks that there are no dominant Division III men’s basketball teams this year and that the season is wide open, so it should be exciting the rest of the way.
I’ve only seen teams play locally in NYC (Skyline, CUNY & NYU) and i haven’t seen a dominant team this year whatsoever. Watching this U of R vs. Brandeis game is a good measuring stick for the top spot but i think the better crop of teams is out west. I’ve seen Lewis & Clark play in a trip to Portland and although they suffered a really bad loss recently, they have a heck of a squad and i can only assume that other teams in the western/central conferences are just as good if not better than those here in the east this year.
Great game.
Yeah, it’s been a while since someone in the NYC area was a legitimate contender for the national title.
This was a great game. Will cause me some struggle on my Top 25 ballot. The instinct is to drop teams when they lose, but it’d be hard to drop Brandeis below Amherst, right?
I’m not so sure. Brandeis has heart but Amherst is pretty good…
As for NYC and not having a title contender: i really can’t see why this is.
CUNY schools are well respected academically (some more than others) but they are all relatively easy to get admitted to compared to the schools we are speaking about (Amherst, Brandeis, etc.), schools that are at the top of D3 hoops right now and have been for quite some time.
Considering…
-Each CUNY has over 5,000+, some even 10,000+ students
-Each CUNY costs less than $5,000 per year for in-state students
-NYC and the NYC area has some of the best basketball talent in the country
how come CUNY schools can’t pull in the talent to compete with schools like Amherst who have 10% admit rates, cost over $40,000 per year and only have around 2,000+ students? It’s mind boggling to me.
Responding to Pat’s post about the ballot,
Second night of a long road trip…I assume they flew to Pittsburgh and bussed to Rochester. (Did Brandeis arrive in Pittsburgh on Thursday night after classes or did they catch an early flight out of Logan on Friday morning?) Busing from Pittsburgh to Rochester is 4.5 hours, 284 miles. (In unpredictable, lake effect, weather?) Or thirty minutes by bus to the airport in Pittsburgh, 2 hours before the flight, one hour flight, 30 minutes getting bags and getting on the bus, 30 minutes to the hotel equals 4.5 hours of travel.
What is home court advantage in D3 in the second game of a road trip that involves a plane flight or at least two nights on the road before the game?
Only a 6-point loss on the road as above #2 at #1…
The outcome seems close to form.
Keep ‘Deis at #2.
JB: Amherst is pretty good but Brandeis has beaten them already — that’s what I was getting at.
I agree, Ralph, it’s a reasonable loss and I would expect a game between the two at Brandeis to go the other way.
Did you see Whitworth when in town over the holidays?
all i know is the patriots are gonna rock the giants in the super bowl. outside of that, U of R is a clear #1 right now!
