Lincoln officially gone to Division II

Lincoln’s term in Division III is over, as the Lions are officially moving into their Division II membership starting this season. Lincoln might still play Division III schools, but we will no longer be tracking their schedules and results and they will no longer be eligible for the postseason.

Lincoln struggled to find games as an independent in Division III and was unable to gain conference affiliation.

The Lions hit our radar strongly on Feb. 8, 1999, when a broken backboard at Marymount forced the suspension of their game with approximately eight minutes left. I went down to Marymount for the conclusion on a Sunday afternoon shortly thereafter, which was the last time I saw Lincoln play until the Sweet 16 at Virginia Wesleyan in 2006.

Lincoln was part of some epic games in the NCAA Tournament the past two seasons, as well as some infamous games.

Best of luck to Lincoln after moving down to Division II.

  1. I wish Lincoln all the best as they move on to Division II.

Lincoln University’s experience in many ways epitomizes the frustrations that Historically Black Colleges have had in Division III. Stillman College left to join Division II as well a few years ago, and now Lincoln. Will Fisk University be next?

  2. I’ll miss the energy that the Lions’ brought to Division III. When Lincoln started a fast break, you couldn’t help but rise out of your seat in anticipation, hoping they would execute the flying alley oop dunk that is a rare treat at this level.

I’ll miss talking with Coach Garfield Yuille, an animated interview subject with a passion that matches that of his players.

And I’ll miss catching up with Sports Information Director Rob Knox who does a first class job with the game notes and hosting broadcasts at Lincoln.

The last year or so I’ve used a blue and orange tether from Lincoln to carry my keys around, something I do with different Division III teams. Sadly I guess I’ll have to retire that key chain now.

Best of luck in Division II and thanks for the fun you provided.

  3. Pat, Wilburt, & Gordon Mann:

Thanks for the comments and support (both pro & con) for Lincoln the last few years. As a supporter of Lincoln Basketball who followed the horrible years, where everyone wanted to schdule the Lions for an easy win, to difficulty of getting teams to play us the last two years, it was great to have the coverage from D3Hoops.

D3Sports has been great for fans who want to follow their alma mater or favorite team that’s not on the major networks and ESPN. Although my beloved Lions are no longer apart of D3Sports, I will be following one of my daughters alma mater Salisbury.

Pat, Keep up the great job you’re doing with D3Sports. Wilburt best of luck to the FISK Bulldogs. Gordon, Thanks for your support and coverage of Lion Basketball, and keep up the great work in the Philly area, as well as your now expanded coverage in D3Sports.
