Third regional rankings

The NCAA Division III men’s and women’s basketball committees released the third regional rankings of the 2005-06 season Wednesday afternoon. The first record listed is the record in regional games, followed by overall record, through Sunday, Feb. 19.

The number of teams ranked in the men’s poll is relative to the number of teams in each region.

This is the last regional ranking we’ll see. The final one is generated after next Sunday’s games and is the one used in selecting and seeding teams.

  1. Real quick, because I have to go off to a meeting: Good news there for Randolph-Macon, not good news for Occidental. Although Oxy is sitting at No. 4, that doesn’t include the loss at Pomona-Pitzer.

Also decent news for Wash U. The Bears can be a Pool C candidate even if they win Saturday against Chicago. Carnegie Mellon holds the tiebreaker in the UAA.

  2. The fact that Nebraska Wesleyan hasn’t seen the light of day in the regional rankings is a good sign for a those not wanting a 16-loss team in the tournament.

  3. NYU loses 2 games since the last rankings and doesn’t fall in the rankings while Utica makes an appearance. A good sign for the Pioneers to get recognized, but getting to the E8 finals will provide a stronger case than a loss to Ithaca should that happen. The top 2 in the E8 are, record-wise, significantly better than the rest of the conference, so numbers say that will happen.

  4. I’m more than a bit surprised to see the Carleton men’s team jump from 8th to 3rd in the West Region rankings. Granted, Wartburg and La Crosse both lost, but St. Thomas did win one game and Whtitewater won both games on the road (Eau Claire and Oshkosh), while Carleton beat St. Mary’s at home and Bethel on the road. Carleton’s opponents last week are now 11-11 and 8-14, while Whitewater’s opponents are 13-9 and 7-14. I know the records are slightly different now than they were last week. Oh well, I guess I have to hope for Carleton to win the MIAC tourney since St. Thomas is now last in the region.

  5. NYU was number 2 in the regional rankings last week, right behind Rochester. They fell 3 spots with their 2 losses.

  6. Willamette has just 3 regional losses (Whitworth, Whitworth, and Puget Sound) and doesn’t even find themselves in the rankings. Their regional win percentage is .842, 3rd highest in the region or 2nd highest if you discount Nebraska Wesleyan.

What makes the massive difference between Puget Sound’s 2nd spot and Willamette’s blank? UPS is 41st in the last QOWI, while Willy is 75th. That’s a big gap, but the strong regional win % doesn’t alone get you in the rankings.

  7. Great Lakes Women – FRANKLIN ??????? They aren’t even in the HCAC Tourny…Finished a weak 5th Place. Looks like a mixup with the Mens Team…maybe the men would be seeded 6th in the womens. However the real team from the HCAC is Manchester. How about a little respect ! 21-8 in ’06, 19-6 in ’07. Go wire to wire in 1st Place, as picked in the Preseason Coaches Poll.

    Go Spartans !
