ATN Podcast 201: Big names take the field

Week 2 is here, and Pat and Keith are ready to tackle it. It starts with three Top 10 teams who are taking the field for the first time this season, and for one in particular, No. 2 Mary Hardin-Baylor, there are some new faces, some missing faces and some big questions. If you didn’t read the news in the offseason, you’ll want to listen to this podcast to get caught up with last year’s runner-up.

No. 6 Linfield plays its first game this week, as does No. 10 Hardin-Simmons, and Keith puts Pat on the spot about those three team. Meanwhile, the guys run down six key games, give six one-line previews of other games and they allow fate to pick one more to preview.

Also, Pat talks with Millikin coach Dan Gritti about his team’s Week 1 performance, his team’s hopes for the rest of the season and whether the CCIW is really as good as advertised. That and more on our Week 2 preview podcast. The D3football.com Around the Nation Podcast is a regular conversation between Pat Coleman and Keith McMillan and guests covering the wide range of Division III football.

ATN Podcast 195: Face to face

With Pat Coleman in the midwest and Keith McMillan on the east coast, our podcasters don’t often have the opportunity to meet in person and record an interview, let alone an entire podcast, but that’s what happened this time. As Pat traveled across the country in May, he chatted with Illinois Wesleyan coach Norm Eash and Westminster (Pa.) coach Scott Benzel, and then Pat and Keith met in Washington, D.C., where they both chatted with Catholic U. coach Mike Gutelius. They then barricaded themselves in his office to finish the rest of the recording.

This month’s podcast is about keeping alumni connected to the program, and how older alumni can do that even when the traditions and stadium and coach have changed. Plus, Eash talks about the values of an overseas trip for a team, as well as a destination coaches should consider. Later on, Pat tells what he knows about the suspension of Pete Fredenburg. That and more on the May 2018 podcast.

Note: As this podcast went live, we learned of the news that Wesley coach Mike Drass has died. Coverage of this is in a separate podcast

ATN Podcast 194: Beating the odds

At the end of an April with a lot of Division III football news, we’re hoping for some even bigger news — an NFL draft pick. Those don’t come every year in D-III, but Wesley offensive lineman Matthew Gono is a prime candidate and we sit down with him to hear about the prospect process and his Draft Day plans on the D3football.com Around the Nation Podcast.

Franklin & Marshall is trying to buck the trend as well, as the Diplomats have their sights on knocking off Johns Hopkins in the Centennial. The Dips have a new stadium at their disposal as well, and coach John Troxell talks about the process that went into Shadek Stadium and how important a previous coach’s players was in making that happen. But Occidental has the biggest odds to overcome, it seems, with the Tigers trying to rally after playing three games last season and essentially getting a $280,000 fundraising tab it has to pay up from its administration.

Plus, there’s the two pieces of big news involving Mary Hardin-Baylor, one of which also involves Mount Union. Pat Coleman and Keith McMillan talk about the NCAA violation UMHB reported, plus the impact a new QB will have on the Cru. Will more schools jump to the NAIA? That and more on the April 2018 podcast.
