ATN Podcast 192: Back for a second year

When you first become a head coach, there’s a flurry of things to do, a bunch of things to learn, and not always enough time to do it or enough people to lean on to get it done. Only after that first season might a coach then have time to step back, re-evaluate, and consider what they might want to do differently. 

On this edition of the D3football.com Around the Nation podcast, we’re talking with three head coaches who are now through that first year and ready to re-evaluate. We chat with Dan Swanstrom of Ithaca, Matt Moore of Northwestern (Minn.) and Jim Hilvert of Baldwin Wallace about their experiences, what they learned and what they might expect of their team in 2018.  Plus, Pat and Keith have the latest on two stories that saw Division III football players from prominent programs in court last fall, and look at the crazy barnstorming schedule that one program will undertake this fall.

ATN Podcast 191: Breakout teams, big stage

January might not seem like a busy month in Division III football, but Division III was represented on the big stage, both at the Sugar Bowl and the Senior Bowl, while the offseason got a bit of a late start for teams that advanced in the playoffs.

To wrap up January, we talked with Wooster offensive lineman Patrick Mohorcic, the captain of the AFCA’s Good Works team, about his work combating violence against women, Wooster’s challenging season and more. Brockport coach Jason Mangone reflects on his team’s run to the national semifinals, getting a late start on recruiting and the fate of his playoff beard. And Berry coach Tony Kunczewski talks about his team’s run to the playoffs, building a program in a part of the country where Division III isn’t well known, and how being on the national committee shapes his understanding of the playoff picture.

Plus, there’s a piece of breaking news in this podcast, as one senior who has a fifth year of eligibility is identified and announced. And since there’s a football game this upcoming week, nobody was allowed to get out of the podcast without giving a prediction for Super Bowl LII.

ATN Podcast 190: A farewell to 2017 and Salem

Our traditional gathering to end the Division III football season takes place in Salem, at Mac & Bob’s. In 2015, when the Internet connection at Salem Stadium cut off our postgame broadcast, we started recording our final podcast there. And last year, we recorded it live, for an audience.

That tradition was short, but sweet, one of the many things we did for the final time. But Pat and Keith, Adam Turer and Frank Rossi and the D3football.com crew did the same Friday night. And they were joined by guests who could talk about the long history of the Stagg Bowl in Salem, Virginia, former NCAA liaison Wayne Burrow and longtime Stagg Bowl game manager Carey Harveycutter. This final 2017 podcast is both a farewell to the season, and a Salem retrospective that tells us how the destination of Division III football came to be this small town in the Roanoke Valley.

Plus, Keith and Pat hand out their game balls, debate and name the offensive player of the year, defensive player of the year and coach of the year, and more on this week’s podcast.
