Stagg Bowl: Hear it again

Although more then 2,500 of you listened to our broadcast of Stagg Bowl XXXV, we thought others might want to tune in. Given the podcast capabilities, I thought we’d post it here.

  1. Pat, thanks for the archive of the audio! I’ve been looking for that for the last two years so I didn’t have to watch my recording of the game with the ESPN clowns calling the game. (5-2-5 defense? “Red Raiders?” Come on…)

On another note, I noticed something funny while browsing the pics of the Stagg Bowl. A lot of UWW players had a “3”decal on the back of their helmets. However, not everyone had it. Any idea what it is/was for and why not everyone wore it?

  2. Also, Derek Stanley made his NFL debut today returning kickoffs for the St. Louis Rams. He coughed up the ball once, but otherwise seemed to have a pretty solid day.

  3. Pat and Keith thanks again for a fantastic season! You guys do a great job, thanks so much! I think it is safe to say I speak for many when telling you guys how much we appreciate this site! What a great ending to the season!

  4. I have a couple of questions:

This may have been covered a long time ago: The refs. It seems to me that during the playoffs, the games are not of the highest quality in the officating dept. How does the NCAA pick the playoff crews?

Then, basing my next question on the enjoyment of watching the high quality football that was on display at the Stagg – Are there any future plans for this site perhaps taking the next step on its game of the week situation by perhaps going with a video feed instead of audio only? I think it would be great for the D3 nation to be able to see some of the other teams that we read and hear about so often.

Anyway, again great job and thank you for your coverage of this season’s play.

  5. I believe each conference puts forward its best officiating crew and they are then assigned to games in which their conference is not playing. Officiating across Division III is obviously not great — better officials certainly tend to move up to bigger paydays — but we have had some pretty good officiating in the Stagg in the recent past. (Read: Since 2003.)

As far as video — money is the only object. It takes a good amount of it to put on a video broadcast because of the amount of bandwidth it requires to stream video. We could use a sponsor in this regard.

  6. I just listened to the fourth quarter of the d3football.com broadcast. Pat, Keith, and Co. did a terrific job!

Is there any chance you’ll be able to put up the post-game press conferences, etc.?

  7. The 3’s on the back of the Warhawk Helmets are for those players who achieve a 3.0 or above….so it’s a good thing that you saw a lot of players with it.

  8. For any who are interested, Derek Stanley made his nfl debut today for the Rams returning kickoffs. Total of 20 return yards, with one fumble. Hopefully he does better next week(if he’s given another chance).

  9. Wow … last I talked to Pat, he was going to put up the season wrap-up up … instead we got the whole game. Great we’ll be able to keep it and listen to it, because when you are doing it, it’s kind of a rush and you can hardly listen to yourself as you are focusing on what’s going on.

If I was critical of anyone (color guys are supposed to have opinions), they can come after me now 🙂

Thanks for the kind words dlippiel, SJF Fan and SJU_Nick.

Also, SJF, regarding the officials … I actually wrote about that for last year’s Stagg Game Program.

If I recall correctly, officiating crews are graded on their performance during the season, and those with the highest grades are selected to work games that, as Pat mentioned, no team from their home conference is involved in. Specifically, a crew that has gotten high marks (the grades come from either in-person or DVD reviews of the game, or both) is held aside for the Stagg Bowl.

If you are super-interested, I can review the story and perhaps re-run it on D3football.com.

  10. Well, now I’ve watched the game with the sound down and the UWW radio play-by-play on (live), watched it again with the ESPN sound on, and now listened to the D3 call here.

You know, it still hasn’t gotten old. 🙂

  11. Hey KitchenSink-
Funny you said that. I am watching again for the third time, and I was at the game.

By the way, the more I watch the game, the more impressed I am with UWW’s play- man for man they played hard (as did MUC).

You know, that game was so intense that I never put a jacket on (I’m not one of those Polar Bear guys)-just wearing my UWW sweatshirt over some layers. I didn’t realize how wet I was until I got to the hotel.

I think the rain was illuminated by the light, creating an almost mystical atmosphere that contributed to the intensity and significance of the game.

  12. mike, I was at Salem last year, but couldn’t swing it this year. I’m sure it was amazing for you. An experience to savor. I can stake a claim to seeing the season unfold from the Lakeland game through the home WIAC season (only missed the game vs EC) and the rain, snow and cold of the playoff games.

I envy that you got to be there. I’m sure the details of the whole weekend will stay with you and give you reason to smile for a long, long time.

  13. Is there a way to put all four quarters and the halftime show on I-Tunes because I could not download the mp3 player on this website? Thanks

  14. It will for sure KitchenSink. On top of that, I brought a friend and her 12 year old boy. He is a pretty good youth football player and loves the game. He had the time of his life at that game. I think too that he now has a new image printed in his mind about the game and what he’d like to do in his football future. He knew the stats and odds before the game started, and he saw that none of it matters if you believe in yourself and your teammates.
