Triple-take: The quarterfinals

Looking like a tough weekend weatherwise in parts of the bracket this weekend.

I, for example, am projecting missed extra points in the North and West regional finals because of weather. But those are only a point or two either direction.

In last week’s picks, Keith and I both went 8-for-8 and Gordon was 7-for-8. Gordon got his in just under the gun, in a comment post eight minutes before kickoff.

Mount Union 59, New Jersey 7. Closest pick, Gordon (Mount Union 42-7). None picked TCNJ with more than seven points.
St. John Fisher 38, Curry 7. Closest pick, Pat (SJF 31-10). All three had St. John Fisher in the 30s.
Central 37, St. John’s 7. Closest pick, Pat (barely, Central 27-24).
Bethel 21, UW-Eau Claire 12. Closest pick, Gordon (Bethel 21-17).
Mary Hardin-Baylor 64, N.C. Wesleyan 0. Closest pick, Pat (UMHB 48-21).
Wesley 38, Muhlenberg 21. Closest pick, Pat (Wesley 28-20).
UW-Whitewater 59, North Central 28. Closest pick, Pat (UWW 38-17).
Wabash 38, Case Western Reserve 23. Closest pick, Pat (Wabash 30-19).

Here’s our take on the regional finals.

South Region
Pat: Mary Hardin-Baylor 41, Wesley 27
Keith: Wesley 34, Mary Hardin-Baylor 31 (OT)
Gordon: Mary Hardin-Baylor 28 Wesley 20

West Region
Pat: Central 20, Bethel 13
Keith: Central 29, Bethel 16
Gordon: Bethel 24 Central 21 (OT)

North Region
Pat: UW-Whitewater 34, Wabash 20
Keith: UW-Whitewater 44, Wabash 21
Gordon: UW-Whitewater 30 Wabash 17

East Region
Pat: Mount Union 40, St. John Fisher 17
Keith: Mount Union 45, St. John Fisher 27
Gordon: Mount Union 35 St. John Fisher 21

  1. The Cru is on a roll. Need I remind you that the year they made the Stagg Bowl run they were crushed by Hardin-Simmons at home. We went there in the second round and showed them how we play in the play-offs.

  2. Bethel goes for it on fourth and inches from their own 25 and gets stuffed. Central will take over and try to put some points on the board.

  3. SJFC1993

I have been listening to the Fisher broadcast team. Robinson is very classy. I have totally enjoyed his comments. he sounds like a great guy.

  4. RB pass for Central works and Schuring hits Josh Smith for the 12 yard scoring strike. PAT is good and the weather not really playing a factor right now as game plans havent changed much. Central leads 7-6 with 5 to go in the 1st.

  5. Maybe the kid was wishing he was playing in the MUC Band rather than enduring this drubbing……he might be looking to transfer and join the band at MUC before opening day next year.

  6. TOP-

    Bethel 12:30
    Central 3:00

Bethel had the ball at the Central 6, then proceeds to fumble the ball away. Central holds on and takes over from their own 7.

  7. SJFC 1993 –

Take it easy. There is a lot of pressure that comes with players that make it to the playoffs – it was poor judgement, no need to dump on a kid that shows a little color.

  8. AS to your comment on it being bush-league – Any idea what our opinion of you was when we put a 70 spot on you?

  9. Well have any of you experts figured out the Raiders yet. I live in Alliance and I haven’t figured them out. They say keep the ball away from them, yea that sounds great. How about beating on a drum when you find yourself scoring your teams only touchdown in the fourth quarter, was that part of the game play.
Bring them on, Mount Union is ready.
Like I said before, ” this is the best Mount team that I’ve ever seen.

  10. Hats off to Mount, I really thought this was going to be a closer game. Once again MUC does all their talking on the field. Well done and congrats to a dedicated group of hardworking kids all across D3Football!

  12. CaptainCru-
You don’t want to eat crow too early? I’m pretty sure UWW’s drubbing of MHB earlier in the season was enough to suffice. I get your point about the turnovers, but to say that UWW was “lucky” is completely garbage. Those turnovers were forced by the defense and were no fluke. UWW’s 3rd in turnover margin nationally, so get used to it. I’m not saying it’s going to happen again next weekend, but you Texas boys better get ready for the weather. It will be nice and cold and snowy for your boys!

The re-match will sure be fun to watch. D3 fans should be happy to see such a great semi-final match-up.

I agree with you dras, This is the best MUC team I think I’ve ever seen.

  14. SJF,

Hey, if your out there anywhere we would love to here from you! Like I told you earlier in the week, Mount has seen you before and this time it would be a whoopin. I think I predicted 49-14. Hows it feel to know your going to start the next two seasons 0-1. You now have something in common with the rest of the OAC teams.

The mighty east was suppose to be a test and the best game we get is from the 3rd place team in the E8. The average score was 51-11 not much different than what Mount did in the regular season. Maybe there is a buyout clause in the contract so your team does’t have to go thru this two more years.

How about that liitle stunt your receiver pulled at the end of the game. I was going to put that all on him but when I saw the rest of the team congratulating him I could see he was not the only classless guy on the team. If I was the coach I would make him walk home. He embarassed not only himself, but his coach, the university, and the people who made the drive there to watch that debacle. The coach didn’t deserve that to happen to him, he seems to be a pretty good guy.

  15. Congrats to UWW on a fantastic game. I’m a Wabash grad and love what Coach Creighton has done with our program. Last week, it seemed like we were a step above Case Western, but this week the tables definitely turned. Wow. We are a good team and had a great year. UWW is just playing at another level. I hope they win it all.

  16. The newest member of the Mt. Union band (a senior transfer from St.John Fisher) , has done a nice job of throwing gasoline on a fire for the rematch in Mt. Union next year. Nice score against the 2nd team defense.
Explain to me when you are clearly out of a game with 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter, you don’t bring in your starting quarterback for next year. Is it to avoid being lumped in with the “OAC Patsies”?

  17. Just wanted to add that if that receiver had one tenth the talent playing football as he does the drums he wouldn’t be in D3 and his team may have showed more.

  18. As expected, SJF wasn’t nearly as close to MUC as they thought they were. Are you ready to accept that LK didn’t WANT to pass last year?

    “my predictions:

MUC 49-10 (going with LK’s record in rematch games)
Bethel 21-14 (I will take a strong running game and good defense in bad weather)
UWW 49-14 (Unfortunately the facts point to a big day for the warhawks on the ground–I hope I’m wrong here)
UMHB 44-24 (the Cru is on a mission for a rematch near Janesville)”

yikes. I am scaring myself with these score predictions.

congrats to MUC, UWW and MHB for moving on. looks like Bethel has played their way to the Purple Altar.

  20. captaincru:

congratulations for finally getting over the wesley hump. should be an interesting rematch game against UWW. however ultimately the cru is doomed….one dimensional offenses do not have a chance once you get to the national semifinals level of competition……in game one UMHB knew that they were outmatched running the football which is why they came out throwing more passes in one half than they usually throw in 5 games….i expect that they will play to their strength this time and try to run the ball…………..good luck with that…..

  21. The really good news from today is: we don’t have to see Ric running naked around Salem Stadium in two weeks!!!

  22. “”There is no reason anyone would want a computer in their home.”

“Whitewater fans——–Beaver is in for a late Thanksgiving “stuffing” WOOHOO—-go CRU——that’s for you BLEEDPURPLE——”
–Captain Cru, d3football.com legend in his own mind.

Two equally accurate and well thought out predictions.
UMHB has the same chance SJF had against Mount this week. Good Luck Capt!

  23. mainjack-i’ll stick with this blog. just don’t go check the pickems from this season or you will know the truth.

  24. bleedpurple –
Great post! Being a UWW alum I always try to be careful with my posts about UWW so I don’t sound like I’m simply a bandwagon jumper. However, Captain Cru jumped off the deep end with that post. Granted, the regular season is behind us, but there was no indication from the previous game against these two teams or the first 3 rounds of the playoffs that the re-match is going to be domintated one way or the other. It’s just good to see that not everyone on this post just talks trash and there’s actually some rational thought by some posters.

  25. And the world waits patiently for SJF Fan to “Man Up”. A little quiet out there.

Just for the record, I saved these little ditties for this special occasion:

Now on to what will prove to be the biggest surprise of the weekend game: SJFC at MUC
Saw a replay of the IC game. They moved the ball on MUC all game. Three scoring drives, plus to drives that ended with INT’s in the endzone. IC was the third place team in the E8. . . Translation: Fisher will move the ball and put points up on this team to level that most of you here refuse to think is possible – – –

did I see TCNJ no – I don’t know if they replay it on their web or not – don’t really care though, they weren’t an E8 team.
SJF’s O-Line is a lot better than it was last year, and are way, way better than IC’s. Even after losing one of the best backs in D3 last year, as a team, are avg. more points than last year per game. MUC’s D-Line should be ready (I’m sure they will be) for their longest afternoon in a couple of years.

Great stuff, I’m sure the Mount D-Line is just waxed right now. I think the final stat that I saw was 1 for 13……SJF on third down conversions.

  26. UWWalum05——-did you happen to catch the stats of the UWW–UMHB game—————take away the turnovers UMHB had and it’s a different ballgame—27–14—-don’t think there were too many times that UWW stopped the UMHB offense————sure, you are going to say—-defense causes turnovers—others could argue just like you would if Beaver had 4 or 5 fumbles in a game that he just didn’t take care of the ball——UMHB didn’t take care of the ball————I didn’t see UWW racking up the numbers in that game——Beaver had 77 yds on like 30 carries——–sure he has like 1700 or 1800 yds rushing——–Thrasher is about 200 yds behind him on only half the carries and twice as many touchdowns———–never said UWW wasn’t a good team—-I give them credit where it’s due———–just don’t think it will be the same result next weekend———UMHB 27–UWW 21—if not, LIKE I SAID, I will eat the crow—-if not—YOU CAN—–keep in mind too———-UWW is 0-2 against the MUC———-UMHB is 1-0 against them at their place as well———-2 games against ya’ll and no wins—same with Wesley—-third time was the charm———we’ll see if they can continue that next weekend.

  27. bleedpurple
that is an above average post. Captain Cru is a baseless fool. I left you a post over on the banter page… it might explain some of my sentiments for Wisconsin. And I wouldn’t pay attention to the second part, unless you enjoy the fiction section

  28. BLEEDPURPLE,
having the same chance that SJF had at the MUC———that’s what Wesley people were saying this week about UMHB——–good thoughts. What kind of day did Beaver have aginst UMHB during the season——a lot better than what he is going to have next weekend. Eat the CROW!

  29. Capt. I have to hand it to you. Part of this post actually makes a reasonable amount of sense. I have no problem with your thought that the turnovers increased the margin of victory. If you are a good team and force turnovers, it will naturally increase margin of victory.

I like the fact that you are picking UMHB by 6 over UWW when yesterday you picked them by 17. Heck, at this rate you will be picking Whitewater by 27 by gametime! Perhaps you could put a score to it….say 41-14????

  30. With all the winning that MUC does, you’d figure that they’d have some class along the way instead of shoving it in the faces of SJF fans and players.

  31. Capt! You snuck in an extra quote! The previous quote actually made a bit of sense. Your last one? Not so much.

You are telling me to EAT THE CROW pointing back to a game in which your team lost 41-14? You are a classic. Please tell me you won’t stop posting after “Mary” gets blasted again Saturday!

  32. Bigwheels77,
That post was hilarious! I guess “TPerk’s” field clearing skills weren’t needed at the end of today’s game!

  33. Okay, so I agree that MHB had the better offensive stats in the previous game. However, that’s going to happen when a team creates 5 turnovers and takes 2 of them back for touchdowns. I agree that next week’s game is going to be completely different. It’s always harder to beat a team for the second time around. However, as bleedpurlple points at above, you can’t even stick with a consistent score prediction. I’m sure MHB is going to be out to stop the run, but check out UWW’s stats from this week’s game. I’m pretty sure they have a 2 dimensional offense w/ Danny Jones at QB.

  34. I must have missed something in the last month and a half. Did UMHB get a new QB and WR’s? The last time you guys came up here you were yelling about how great your running back duo was and we shut you down. The run defense created the need for you to pass and unless I have missed something you still don’t have the fire power to win by passing. I am sick and tired of hearing about the mistakes that other teams make. IT IS NOT A FLUKE THAT THE D CREATED 5 OR MORE TURNOVERS EVERY GAME OF THE PLAYOFFS SO FAR! Come to the perk, run the ball and see what you can do but I don’t see this one playing out much different.

  35. captaincru–you’re a joke. Step up and admit you were outplayed earlier this year. Wow!! It’s just hilarious to sit hear and listen to what you post. Good luck next week.

  36. I will make a prediction… UMHB won’t be able to cut the mustard. They will be forced out of their game and will turn the ball over like the first meeting. UWW by 17…. UWW 30 UMHB 13. Early field goals and one big play in the third quarter. Beaver runs for 193 on 19 carries. He hits the showers in the middle of the fourth quarter, not because he is hurt… but because he wants to get a jump on the party and the line of fine women that will be waiting for a lock of his hair.

  37. Capt…..I’m glad you pointed out the stats from the last UWW/MHB matchup when discussing turnovers. Did you happen to catch the game between your team and Wesley today? What are your thoughts regarding the stats/turnovers from that game? Interesting…it seems as though MHB had 363 total yards compared to Wesley’s 357. What do you think the outcome of that game would have been if you take away the FIVE turnovers MHB created? According to your analysis, it appears Wesley is the better team.

Dude, I don’t know who you are, but your stats/turnover argument was a layup for the rest of us on this topic. Thank you. I think you should take some of your thoughts to the WIAC/ASC boards….you would get eaten up. 🙂

  38. captaincru again you have to bring up what happened in the past and last time i checked the past has no outcome on the future so the last UW-Whitewater game has no effect on the game coming up unless it gets into the heads of the UMBH players than and only than will the past have an effect on the game next saturday

  39. captcru, i was more than ready to give credit where credit was due if umhb had actually done what you said they did. where you at the game? obviously not, very few, if any people who saw the game believe that umhb steam rolled anyone. if you are going to whine about the turnovers against uww as the reason you lost, then you have to accept the only reason umhb won today was because of the turnovers by wesley. as i had stated in my post prior to this contest, that if wesley turned the ball over they would lose and that is what happened today. one thing i learned from being at the game today is that either umhb is overhyped or that wesley is under respected. 5 turnovers and all umhb got was 27. 2 big runs and 2 key pass completions was all they really mustered all day. wesley was able to run the ball, 100 + yards and throw the ball, not sure about some of the play calls, but that is for another discussion on another day. imho, if that is all umhb is going to bring to the game with uww, they have no chance. wesley’s defense played a great game today no matter what the stats say, i have not seen them yet. you can chirp all you want, but be realistic in your opinion about next weeks game with uww.

  40. MUC Fans-

Congratulations on the resounding victory today. You have an awsome team due all the praise and respect that there is to offer.

I realize that some of you are anxious to tear into a few of the SJFC posters (one poster in particular) and you have every right to do so. I would just ask you to keep in mind that the players and coaches weren’t the ones doing the posting so please try your best to keep them out of the fray. What our WR did was disrespectful and uncalled for, to interpret the other players congratulating him after the touchdown as their approval for his actions is a bit speculative. Making a broad inference that there are a bunch of classless kids on the team is just plain wrong. Coach Vos being worried about being considered an “OAC Patsy” and thus keeping his senior QB in until the final whistle is absurd. The venom you have for a certain poster is completely justified, refering to the kids/coaches on the SJFC team in order to express that venom isn’t.

  41. Yes SJF Fan as I said before good luck making statements that will surely come back to bite you. I am a dedicated Fisher fan, I suspected this game would get out of hand but I made the drive down anyway to cheer the team on. Fisher did put up a lot of yards on Mount Union (358 or so, could be off on that)…really just couldn’t capitalize when it counted most. The score could have been closer but the game was never in doubt.

Oh and Jackson doing what he did wasn’t cool but I guarantee you Vos isn’t having any of that. That’s a scar on the face of our program.

Back to back Mount Union games for Fisher? Sheesh…

  42. CaptainCru———enough with the eat the crow statements———–you’ve used up your lifetime allotment of using that expression all in one day..plus, at this rate, you’re going to be on a nothing but crow diet for the next two years. You’re a complete opposite of the intelligent UMHB fans I know. How ’bout coming over to the WIAC board to share your brand of wisdom? BTW, the promotion board has met and has demoted you to Private and confinement at Leavenworth!!
