ATN podcast: Four games, plus awards

Four teams survived and advanced on Saturday … perhaps Mount Union didn’t really have to do the “survive” part … and we have two semifinals upcoming with familiar opponents.

But before we even get there, it’s also awards season, and Keith and Pat give their take on the four Gagliardi Trophy finalists and the apparent direction of the award itself in recent years. We’ve taken to referencing it as the top overall student-athlete in Division III football. Also, the D3 Senior Classic was played on Saturday, taking some important steps forward toward being an all-star game

And then there were the games, including UW-Whitewater’s rally, the impressive showings by the Wesley and Bethel defenses and Mount Union’s methodical dismantling of another opponent. That and we look forward to next week’s two semifinals. All that’s covered too, and it’s even under an hour long this time.

ATN podcast: Down to eight

Leo Gutierrez was the fourth of four Mary Hardin-Baylor players to rush for more than 100 yards Saturday.

A strong ground game; playing strong defense. These are the tenets of teams that go deep into the playoffs, and they were things that all eight winners had in common in Saturday’s second round. (Other than UW-Whitewater on defense.)

Pat Coleman and Keith McMillan break down Saturday’s playoff games, from the thrillers at St. Thomas and UW-Whitewater to the snoozers at Mary Hardin-Baylor and Wesley. At least those two teams will meet in what is expected to be an epic on Saturday in the quarterfinals.

Plus we have an MIAC rematch and more coming up in this week’s games with the much-awaited UW-Whitewater/North Central showdown.

Pat and Keith go game by game through the bracket, with their reactions on each of the 16 first-round games. Upsets? Yeah, maybe not so many, but we still learned a bit and hey, there are going to be blowouts in the first round of any tournament.

Plus, a look forward to next week’s games and Keith’s reactions to the brackets in general.
