A tripleheader weekend

Keith McMillan and I often plan these things out — in fact, last year he spent some space in his column talking about doubleheaders you could create with a little bit of drive time.

Now, I’ll be honest, I miss my family (they’re in D.C. getting the house ready to sell while I’m in Connecticut working at my new job). So as long as I’m not home, I might as well keep myself busy, and this weekend I’m planning to do it by seeing three Division III football games.

Unfortunately, because of geography, I’ll only see two ranked teams, and both of them are in the same game, but it should be fun anyway. I am based in Norwalk, Conn., now and I have Friday off, so I’ll drive up to Worcester, Mass., to see Worcester State host Nichols. Take the drive west and spend the night somewhere along the way so I can see No. 12 Delaware Valley at No. 19 Wilkes, kickoff at 1 p.m. Then I’ll take the relatively short trip to Reading to see Susquehanna at Albright, 7 p.m.

I might regret this when all is said and done, because I’ll be pretty exhausted, but should be an experience.

Then I just have to get home and get some sleep so I can be ready for the Sunday Night Football shift at work.

Stagg Bowl XXXIV preview

Alright, since so many people are interested in talking about the Stagg Bowl matchup like it’s a given Mount Union and UW-Whitewater will meet again, let’s look at the Stagg Bowl for a second.

Without being a homer, what matchup would you most like to see in the Stagg Bowl? Use your creativity here.

Here’s some for starters:

Rowan vs. Washington and Jefferson, Union vs. Lycoming. These are the four teams who have lost more than one Stagg Bowl and never won any. Presumably if these teams played, someone would win.

Augustana vs. Mount Union, especially if it could be Augustana ’86 against Mount Union ’02, the cappers of the dynasties.

Illinois College vs. Mississippi College. If you squint it looks like a bowl game. Maybe ESPN would hiccup and put it in prime time.

It’s hardly more ridiculous to discuss these than it is to discuss a Stagg Bowl taking place 1,100 games from now.

Did I mention about not being a homer?

Broadcasters: D3football.com Report back for ’06

An informational posting, not open for comments.

A heads-up for radio broadcasters that the D3football.com Report is returning for (what we believe to be) an eighth season in 2006. The Report is a 3- to 4-minute recorded segment for use on radio pregame shows, a weekly national look at Division III football.

The Report is written by D3football.com’s Pat Coleman and produced by Ray Martel of WFAN (oh yes, and D3football.com as well). It wraps up the previous week’s games and previews the games for that Saturday, including a call of the week highlight from the week before. We provide it free to student broadcasts (broadcasts produced by students on student stations), after all, we remember what it’s like to be in their shoes. The cost for the season for commercial stations is $25, or less than three bucks per game.

It is not available to fans at large. If you want to hear it, let your radio station know it should get on the list!
