Stagg Bowl XXXIV preview

Alright, since so many people are interested in talking about the Stagg Bowl matchup like it’s a given Mount Union and UW-Whitewater will meet again, let’s look at the Stagg Bowl for a second.

Without being a homer, what matchup would you most like to see in the Stagg Bowl? Use your creativity here.

Here’s some for starters:

Rowan vs. Washington and Jefferson, Union vs. Lycoming. These are the four teams who have lost more than one Stagg Bowl and never won any. Presumably if these teams played, someone would win.

Augustana vs. Mount Union, especially if it could be Augustana ’86 against Mount Union ’02, the cappers of the dynasties.

Illinois College vs. Mississippi College. If you squint it looks like a bowl game. Maybe ESPN would hiccup and put it in prime time.

It’s hardly more ridiculous to discuss these than it is to discuss a Stagg Bowl taking place 1,100 games from now.

Did I mention about not being a homer?

  1. Augustana vs. Mount Union, especially if it could be Augustana ‘86 against Mount Union ‘02, the cappers of the dynasties.

The Dynasty is far from “capped”
    -The Rick

  2. If D3 had a losers bracket you might have some of those matchups…………….. Since they don’t expect a UWW/MU matchup. Why is it that hard to believe those teams will be back again. I don’t understand.

  3. The cappers of those two teams’ runs, definitely. How many of your current players, “Aaron Robinson,” were on the 2002 team?

    Not program, team.

  4. You asked for creativity, so here goes….Wabash v. DePauw in a replay of the Monon Bell game. And the Little Giants sweep.

  5. OK, this is part homer. How about Hampden-Sydney vs Wabash. NO GIRLS ALLOWED!
On second thought, nevermind…..don’t think I like that idea. 🙂

  6. Well, since we’ve now seen the all-purple Stagg Bowl, why not have the all-Crusaders championship.

I’d like to see Capital vs. Mary Hardin-Baylor…….huh, that’s not all that far-fetched, really.

I’m sure the “Go Crusaders” chants would be kept to a minimum that day.

  7. Oh man,
    I’m built for this.

Actual competitiveness of the teams aside, all creativity like that H-SC vs. Wabash idea.

Well how is any Stagg Bowl really complete with actual Stags? (Claremont-Mudd-Scripps)

How about the Plymouth (State vs.) Rock(ford) Stagg Bowl?

We could do Greenville vs. Redlands or Whitewater vs. Blackburn.

Wittenberg vs. Whittier … not a broadcasters dream. Neither is Wooster vs. Worcester (State or Polytech)

Last week the Big Blue played the Blue Boys.

What about Luther vs. Methodist or Catholic (too bad Wesleyan would never make it).

Trinity (Texas) vs. Trinity (Conn.) is impossible, but Bridgewater State-Bridgewater isn’t. Technically, anyway.

St. John’s vs. St. John Fisher. Mount Union-Union. Those could actually happen.

Adrian vs. any of the teams near Philly.

I’m just getting warmed up …

  8. Any of the Lutherans (Cal, Pacific, Wisconsin, Texas) or Wesleyans (Illinois, North Carolina) vs. each other would make fun matchups.

Division III seems to be Nazarene-free, but we do have lots of Saints, Concordias and a couple Baptists.

Luther really did just play Martin Luther. Mass Maritime and Maine Maritime play. Christopher Newport-Newport News isn’t really clever. Nor is Delaware Valley-Lebanon Valley.

Maybe Catholic fans should go to the Mass (Dartmouth game).

    MIT-RHIT.

    McMurry-MacMurray.

Washington & Lee vs. Washington & Jefferson would be a regional game, and North Central-Central possibly could be as well.

    Willamette-Williams (not possible)

    Hope vs. Defiance.

Alma could play (Salve) Regina while Mary (Hardin-Baylor) played (John) Carroll. Surely, LaVerne would want a piece of that action.

Alfred seems like the kind of guy who would enjoy breakfast with Emory and Henry.

Really corny: Rowan vs. any of the water schools.

Oh what one could come up with using ‘Widener’ and (Concordia-) ‘Moorhead.’

‘Macon it to Salem’ would undoubtedly be Randolph-Macon’s theme.

‘All Rhodes lead to Salem’ wouldn’t be as bad. Would it?

I wonder if one could write a story with all 234 team names in it. Some anyway … like ‘Albion line later, after going out with Alma. The hotel Occidentally PAC’d too many of us in the room, so I’ll be sleeping Endicott. But we got a TV, so at least I can watch the Simpsons.’

… Don’t try to Curry favor with me, I already bet two Nichols on the game.

In all seriousness, though … it’s hard to watch all of the teams and have favorites. But I’d like to see a CCIW team bust through the North Region glass ceiling and go to the show. I’d like to see East and South pull upsets and meet in Salem. I’d like to see two teams fly to Texas for first-round games … but I digress.

  9. Wilmington vs Guilford – how about two bowls of Quaker oats? 🙂 Sorry, the alloted message space isn’t large enough to quote the odds. lol

  10. The Yeomen … that’s good.

So many ways we could go with mascots in the mix. If Crusaders can meet, why not Pioneers (Widener, Grinnell, Lweis & Clark) Cardinals (St. John Fisher, Catholic, Otterbein, North Central) or Yellowjackets/ Jackets (R-MC, Howard Payne, Waynesburg, Defiance).

    Lords-Lord Jeffs.

    Johnnies-Johns Hopkins.

If you took the best Redmen and Blue Streaks, could you match the Purple Raiders?

Forgot Heidelberg, Wittenberg, Mark Wahlberg, Muhlenberg, Fitchburg. Which one doesn’t belong?

Could the Tommies (boys) sign (Big Daddy) Kean?

I swear we had a thread like this on the board once … Anyway, off to do more significant things with my afternoon, like nap.

  11. Speaking of odds, Westminster (Mo.) vs. Westminster (Pa.)

Surprised I had nothing for Thiel, Albright or the Poets.

    Knights-Green Knights.

    Dutch-Flying Dutchmen.

The old Statesmen-Diplomats game … not in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference, however, but involved with Liberty and the Centennial.

Dear God, make it stop …

  12. Whitewater could put out the Prarie Fire, who would still leave Blackburn behind.

Too many Bulldogs (Redlands, TLU, Adrian) and Tigers, Wildcats, Panthers, as always …

All off the top of my head today, I swear …

  13. “Really corny: Rowan vs. any of the water schools.”

this one is my favorite Keith 🙂

“But I’d like to see a CCIW team bust through the North Region glass ceiling and go to the show.”

    Yeah, that would be nice…

Ignoring the homer comment… is there any team whose mascot is the lightning? Thunder and Lightning would be funny.

The 40 yr old 86 Augustana guys would have a pretty hard time keeping up with the 20 something Mt guys, wouldn’t they? 😛

  14. How about a “Bottom of the Barrel Bowl” pitting the bottom 2 ranked teams in D3 at the start of the season?

The winner gets to play a local high school team the Friday before the Stagg Bowl. The loser gets to work the hotdog stands and pick up trash on Stagg Bowl Saturday.

  15. Sorry, Pat, they can’t make the Mispronunciation Bowl. Evidently, both Allegheny and Muhlenberg have accepted invitations to your Misspelling Bowl. 🙂

  16. Die Hard:

Lehman College in New York — members of the CUNYAC for Division III basketball — have Lightning as their mascot.

  17. Yeah, there were some where I needed other divisions too.

The only one I can think of right now is Muhl(mule)enberg vs. ASSumption.

I guess I could have just not said that one.

  18. Kean (don’t call us Keen) University vs. Keene (if we only had football) State would be fun. And William Paterson is a definite entry in the Misspelling playoffs!!

  19. Taking hasanova’s thoughts on Rice a little further….How about Rice and Wheaton in the Cereal Bowl? That “oat” to generate a lot of interest. OK, I’ve milked that for all its worth.

  20. Thanks gordon, but that doesn’t help me in football 😛

or the royals – muskingum vs kings or principia (do they have a fb team?) or any team that has some royalty as their mascot like the Heidelberg student princes

What if we did all schools that had staple foods in their name… then you could do wheaton and otterbein and colby and olivet, Carnegie Mellon and Salisbury

or we could do sauces, and do curry and either of the worchesters

    snap… the Steak stagg bowl… worchester and salisbury… 😀

  21. Diehard,
    Now you’re cooking with gas!

I briefly toyed with an Emeril reference with Curry, since it’s not far from his hometown of Fall River, Mass. … Not sure how I even know that.

King’s vs. Kings Point, and there are Bethel’s Royals …

Somebody played in the Cereal Bowl this week. SD State Jackrabbits home field, I think …

  22. ODAC member Eastern Mennonite University in VA has no football, but their teams are the Royals.

How about Hamline (MN) and Colby (ME)? Maybe we can sandwich that game into our busy bowl lineup. Then, for dessert, how about Berry (GA) mixing it up with the Concordia (MN) Cobblers.
