Game Day: Will there be a letdown?

It’s hard to imagine there being much of a letdown from the teams that won big games last week, although we tried in this week’s Triple Take.

Last week I saw an epic St. Thomas-St. John’s game in front of 16,000-plus fans. This week I’ve been in New York for business purposes and while I’m here, trying to take in a couple teams I haven’t seen yet: Morrisville State and WPI. They’re not playing each other, though. I’ve seen their opponents and their opponents’ home stadiums, as Morrisville is playing at William Paterson and WPI is at Merchant Marine.

Meanwhile there are many other more interesting games out there, although our regular contingent of Wesley posters might not have much of a battle to talk about today. Top-ranked UW-Whitewater has an interesting home game against 3-1 UW-Stout. No. 5 Mary Hardin-Baylor has a loss to avenge from last year when it hosts Mississippi College. Augustana has a chance for a signature win to go with its signature loss this season, if it can take down No. 7 North Central. Hampden-Sydney and Bridgewater has long been a battle that sets the tone in the OAC.

Much more by following us on Twitter as well, @d3football.

  1. I will be at the UMHB vs MC game today to watch what is brewing to be a classic rival. ASC is becoming a stronger conference each year. It appears the top 3 tier teams are becoming more difficult each to determine. Last week UMHB vs LC was a nail biter and todays game will be another nail biter.

  2. Beautiful 71 degrees and sunny for kickoff here at William Paterson. Morrisville State might be a little better this year than in the recent past but is still young.

And on the third play from scrimmage, Andre Snead intercepts a Morrisville pass and took it back 35 yards for a touchdown. Pioneers up 7-0 early.

  3. At the end of the first quarter, Paterson leads Morrisville 14-7. Morrisville had a pair of dismal drives (ending in a pick six and a 28-yard punt) but put together a 62-yard drive for a score with 1:30 left in the quarter.

Paterson has some individual talent on offense. I like Joe Muraglia, a speedy 5-7 receiver.

  4. Grove City in the redzone against Thomas More, 6:15 in the first quarter with the Saints up 7-0. Competitive game so far.

  5. 15 yard run by Zach Gross, and the Wolverines score their first TD against Thomas More. PAT good, 5:03 and it’s 7-7.

  6. GCC defense stops the Thomas More drive again, despite a key penalty/mistake by GCC’s #58 again. Grove City drives up the middle as their line makes the holes and Blaine Miller makes the yards. But a high snap ends the drive just outside the redzone. Nuts.

  7. Thomas More fumbles on near mid field, several accidental kicks and a lot of scrum later, Thomas More recovers on their own 3 yard line. Delay of game gives them a half-the-distance to the goal, on the the subsequent play the GCC defense (Chakot, Patterson) caught the Saint’s QB in the endzone for a safety. GCC leads early in Q2, 9-7.

  8. Very strange play, like to see it on tape.

Thomas More is actually +1 on rushing yards for the game so far. After stopping Grove City’s drive and converting twice on third down Saints just scored a TD on a long pass from midfield after taking a time out on yet another 3rd down situation. Saints now lead the Wolverines 14-9, 6 minutes left in the 2nd quarter.

  9. End of the half, Saints lead the Wolverines 14-9. Ferguson dropped an interception that would likely have put GCC ahead… it is a close game.

  10. Wolverines did a good job in the first half shutting down Thomas More’s running game. On the other hand, GCC’s passing game is struggling.

    TMC GRO
    1st downs 10 10
    Rush yards -3 86
    Pass yards 167 56
    Total offense 164 142

Opening kickoff of the first half, GCC recovers a fumble and starts at the TMC 34 yard line. Let’s see what they can do with it.

  11. William Paterson unable to put this game away and Morrisville State is still alive, down 28-21 with 3:57 left. Pioneers have missed two short field goals in the second half. Morrisville seems to be playing with a really short playbook.

Just lost its starting quarterback to injury.

  12. 28-14 for Mt Union vs Marietta looks worse.

TMC scores again, leads 17-9. Still close, TMC intercepted a pass at the goal line, preventing a Wolverine TD in the middle of Q3.

  13. Saint Vincent is giving Washington and Jefferson a good game, trailing 24-14 with 9:49 to go in Q3.

  14. I’m out here in the press box at Pacific University’s brand new Lincoln Park Stadium, keeping an eye on this and all the other Northwest Conference action. In Tacoma, Pacific Lutheran has already taken a 25-0 lead over Whitworth.

  15. Thomas More breaks it open and wins 31-9 over the Wolverines. Three long yardage touchdowns, two on offense and 1 intercept for a TD, made the difference in the scoring. That goal intercept also prevented a GCC score. The Saints adjustments in the second half slowed Grove City’s offense enough to prevent scores, though GCC managed to make progress on most possessions.

    TMC GRO
    1st downs 17 16
    Rush yards 111 134
    Pass yards 179 94
    Total offense 290 228

Grove City’s loss of it’s second string QB necessitating the insertion of a sophomore 3rd string QB in Q4 didn’t help, either.

  16. Was not able to make it to the Rockford College v. Lakeland game today, but heard that a player had to be revived and airlifted from the field. Does anyone have an update on the situation? Thoughts and prayers to the Rockford Regent family.

  17. Got to Merchant Marine later than I had hoped because the Morrisville State/William Paterson game ran long with all the penalties. Imagine my surprise when I got here and Merchant Marine had transformed itself into a triple option team in the past week and a half. Good job here in the second half, especially from fullback John-Leon Gosselin, who had 16 carries for 68 yards in the second half of a 26-9 win.

  18. St. John Fisher 34 Ithaca 10 SJF played well got the job done there a great ball club….glad we got a week off..rest is good..still lov-U-IC
