We’ve got three Top 25 battles during the day and an intriguing rivalry game at night here as Week 3 of the 2010 Division III football season dawns.
Tonight will be particularly interesting in that we’ll get our first real look at what St. John Fisher is made of. The Cardinals have blown out their first two opponents, teams that finished in the lower half of the NJAC last season. Tonight they play Rochester, which, while not having made the playoffs, has still provided a challenge to its local rival. Here’s Keith McMillan’s take on last year’s Courage Bowl between the two.
The Wheaton/UW-Platteville game also looks interesting under the lights tonight, as do many of our afternoon games, such as Trine at UW-River Falls, St. John’s hosting Concordia-Moorhead and Pomona-Pitzer/Lewis and Clark, which I covered last year and was an entertaining game,
And, of course, there are three games between ranked teams, with Wesley hosting Delaware Valley, Mississippi College at Hardin-Simmons and Ohio Northern at Otterbein.
Where are you and what are you seeing today?
Grove City hasn’t beat Westminster on their field in over a decade. Today’s game with the Titans looks like a good opportunity to break that streak, based on last week’s PAC/MAC set of games.
Hi folks. Frank Rossi here. Normally, I’d be announcing a Union College Fighting Dutchmen football game on a beautiful Saturday like today, but Union has a bye week and Pat Coleman is out of pocket today. So, I’ll be taking you around the Division III Nation today, pointing out surprises, outstanding performances and games to watch throughout the afternoon.
Our first game featuring a Top 25-ranked team is Washington U @ #6 Wittenberg, where after one quarter of play, Wittenberg is showing why its #6, up 21-0.
In an important game between unranked opponents, Hobart is visiting Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh today — the teams are tied at 7-7 entering the second quarter, but Hobart has the ball at the CMU 10. We’ll keep our eyes on this one.
Finally, Springfield is visiting Wilkes in another game to watch in the Noon starting blocks. The Pride lead Wilkes 7-0 late in the 1st Q.
Stay tuned here, and post your own impressions throughout the day. It’s GAMEDAY!
As I posted, Hobart scores on 4th & Goal from the 1 with a pitch from quarterback Doug Vella to Steven Webb to make the score 14-7 Hobart over Carnegie Mellon with 13:31 left in the 1st Half.
When it rains, it pours. Hobart recovers an onside kick, and one play later scores on a 49-yard touchdown pass from Vella to Garth Muratori to make the score 21-7 Hobart with 13:17 left in the 1st Half.
Most of the Noon games are at halftime now. Hobart held onto its 21-7 lead over Carnegie Mellon despite a late interception thrown by Hobart QB Doug Vella. #6 Wittenberg is also staying in control with a 31-0 Halftime lead over Wash. U.
Some other scores of note: Salisbury took the long trip up to Maine and are getting a scoreboard bang out of their travel buck, leading Husson 49-0 at Halftime. And in a game that Pat Coleman would normally have his eye on, McDaniel is leading Catholic 10-7 with a minute before Halftime.
A slew of 1pm EDT games have begun — this is where you come in, pointing out the games of interest that I don’t spot. Let’s hear some comments from our readers during this block of games, especially!
UW-Whitewater 7
Campbellsville 0
8:38 Q1
So far, the marquis game in the Top 25 is a defensive stalemate:
Del. Val. 0
Wesley 0
End of 1st Q.
However, Del. Val. intercepted the ball just inside Wesley’s 20 — can they put points on the board?
If anyone’s interested in live video of UW-Whitewater vs. Campbellsville, check out the Campbellsville site here: http://www.campbellsville.edu/live-streaming
Click the “live coverage of select events” link at the top of the page. Good quality video, but whoever’s producing the broadcast loves to switch camera angles at seemingly random times! 😉
Del. Val. returns the favor as Mark Hatty’s pass is intercepted by Wesley’s Dan Heiland to preserve the scoreless tie in the 2nd Q.
Wesley scores on a 51-yard Brandon Wright TD run with 12:05 left in the 1st Half, making it 7-0 #3 Wesley on top of #8 Del. Val.
Another score of note
RPI 14
Utica 14
1:17 Left 1Q
Game going back and forth after three interceptions by the two teams to start the game (2 for RPI, 1 for Utica).
I think my last comment got eaten by the spam filter. If you’re interested in live video of the UW-Whitewater vs. Campbellsville game check out the Campbellsville University website. It’s good video except that the producer loves to change camera angles seemingly at random!
Oh yes, and UWW is now up 14-0 late in the 1st Q.
Of course, as soon as I make a comment about the quality of the video my connection goes choppy and I lose all audio. Harumph!
Good to see your posts, warhawktrombone — memories of last year’s Stagg Bowl 🙂
In that RPI-Utica game, it is now 21-14 Utica at the end of the 1st Quarter. The teams have combined for 5 touchdowns in 4:31 at the end of the quarter. Keep your eye on this game.
Don’t remind me, Frank. I don’t want to see that much snow for at least a couple months. 😉
Booker Stanley powers through the Campbellsville defense for a TD. UW-W 21 Campbellsville 0, 12 min. left in the 2nd Q.
In OAC Top 25 action:
#2 Mount Union 7
John Carroll 0
7:34 1st Quarter
#11 Ohio Northern 7
#18 Otterbein 0
9:42 1st Quarter
Grove City Wolverines up over the Westminster Titans 10-9 with 8:20 left in the first half. GCC is converting in the red zone while the Titans are not, but the Titans ran back a kickoff for a TD and a bad snap lead to a Titan safety to keep them in it.
In th “ugh” category, we have one made for the record books if things don’t slow down:
Salisbury 70
Husson 0
4:43 3rd Quarter
Wesley, Mt. Union, RPI and Hobart have both added touchdowns since my last updates on each:
#8 Del Val 0
#3 Wesley 14
6:04 2nd Quarter
#2 Mount Union 14
John Carroll 0
5:45 1st Quarter
Hobart 28
Carnegie Mellon 7
7:38 3rd Quarter
RPI 21
Utica 21
13:00 2nd Quarter
Newest entrant in the Top 25, Alfred, is holding on to a 21-10 lead over the St. Lawrence Saints just before Halftime. Not the most impressive performance by Alfred this season — but the game doesn’t seem in doubt to this point.
40-yard TD pass for Campbellsville. :56 in the 2nd Quarter, UW-W 21 Campbellsville 7.
Wolverines score again, 17-9 with 30 seconds left in the half. But Clayton Hall is hurt in the last stage of the drive, and Zach Gross leads them in.
I C starting slow again 10 7 at the half over Widner
#3 Wesley had a chance to take a three-possession lead late in the 1st Half, but failed on 4th down in the 35-yard line zone. #8 DVC had a chance of their own to put points up late, assisted by a Wesley penalty. Yet, DVC opted against a 28-yard field goal attempt on 4th & 2 from the Wesley 11. DVC failed to convert on 4th Down, and the score remains, at Halftime:
#8 Del. Val. 0
#3 Wesley 14
Halftime
Whitewater marches down the field in the last minute but misses a short field goal. Halftime in Kentucky with the same score, UWW up 21-7.
Anyone know what’s going on with North Central and Olivet? Scoreboard says they’re in a delay in the 2nd Q. Weather?
There was a 30-minute lightning delay, but the game has resumed, based on the audio feed.
Trombone, video from Kentucky is terrible…don’t know what you are doing to get such quality.
nathanshin – Yeah, it worked well for a while then went all wonky on me. I’m guessing too many Whitewater people are watching and overloading the server. I gave up and am listening to the UW-W radio broadcast.
The OAC Top 25 games are both at halftime:
#2 Mount Union 28
John Carroll 0
Halftime
#11 Ohio Northern 17
#18 Otterbein 10
Halftime
Early in the 3rd Quarter, Wesley is handing Del. Val. an opportunity to win the game, with an interception leading to a touchdown and a fumble by the quarterback leading to a redzone opportunity. Del. Val. trails 14-7 for now, with 8:54 left in the 3rd Quarter. Stay tuned.
Wesley holds in a goal-to-go situation for Del. Val. and Del. Val. misses a 27-yard field goal, preserving Wesley’s 14-7 lead. Getting interesting, though, with 8 minutes left in the 3rd Quarter.
Touchdown Warhawks! 6:17 to go in the 3rd, UW-W 28 Campbellsville 7.
24-9 GCC over Westminster, end of Q3. 3rd and 4th down conversions have been the difference, everything else being fairly comparable.
GCC Westminster
3rd-Down Conversions 8-13 2-8
4th-Down Conversions 2-2 0-3
Possession Time 22:53 22:07
Red-Zone Conversions 4-4 0-2
St. John’s facing a challenge hosting Concordia-Moorhead. The Johnnies lead 20-14 with 5:52 left in the 1st Half.
The battle of Top 10 teams lives up to its billing:
#8 Del. Val. 14
#3 Wesley 14
1:29 3rd Quarter
Intentional grounding in the end zone by Campbellsville leads to a safety for the Warhawks. UW-W 30 CU 7 14:05 left in the game.
Congratulations to Utica College, on their way to their first 3-0 start in program history:
RPI 21
Utica 42
6:40 4th Quarter
The third missed short field goal by Eric Kindler keeps Whitewater up 30-7 with 11:46 to go.
Quick fumble on 1st down by Campbellsville gives UW-W the ball back on the CU 27.
Alfred not making the most of their first Top 25 ranking week:
#25 Alfred 24
St. Lawrence 16
4:00 4th Quarter (SLU Ball)
Go Gallaudet! 59 points!
#3 Wesley has turned the ball over to #8 Del. Val. FIVE times in the second half. Del. Val. is deep in Wesley territory with 8:47 left in regulation and tied at 14-14. 4th & 1 from the Wesley 3 coming up.
This time, the field goal is GOOD for Del. Val. 17 unanswered:
#8 Del. Val. 17
#3 Wesley 14
8:14 4th Quarter
Hold on Del Valley!!
Go Bombers!
37 – 7 vs Weidner
Alfred holds:
#25 Alfred 21
St. Lawrence 16
Final
Correction:
#25 Alfred 24
St. Lawrence 16
Final
Antwan Anderson takes it in from 1…UWW 37 Campbellsville 7 4th quarter
UWW up 37-7, 5:19 to go in the game.
