Gameday: Derailing the inevitable

When we closed our Stagg Bowl 36 broadcast in December 2008, we thought Mount Union and UW-Whitewater would be back to Salem this year. We picked them as the top teams in the preseason and all the way through today. This is the last stop along the way toward the “inevitable.”  Except it isn’t inevitable. Wesley and Linfield can derail the anticipated re-re-re-rematch and we’ve got it covered a variety of ways.  Check out the front page if you haven’t already for all kinds of links to audio, video, livestats (off the scoreboard) and features leading up to today’s games.

Then at 12 pm EST tune into John McGraw and Keith McMillan in Alliance for Mount Union/Wesley and, an hour later, Pat Coleman and Joe Davis in Whitewater for UW-Whitewater/Linfield.

And all along the way, feel free to sound off on the games here.

  1. Mount Union wastes no time, stopping Wesley on three plays. Kurt Rocco connects with Cecil Shorts for the 15-yard touchdown to give the Purple Raiders a 7-0 lead.

    Mount Union 7 Wesley 0 – 11:19 1st

  2. Mount Union converts a third down with a long pass inside the Wesley 10. The Wolverines hold and force a Herman Timmersjo field goal.

    Mount Union 10 Wesley 0 – 5:15 1st

  3. Wesley puts two first down together for the first time and then takes a long shot down the field to Ellis Krout. Instead Mount Union DB Alex Ferrara takes it away at the Mount 3.

On the next play, Rocco runs headlong into Benson and fumbles. Wesley recovers at the Mount 14

    Mount 10 Wesley 0 – 1:40 1st

  4. Wesley QB McSweeney tries the jump pass into more than triple coverage and Mount Union intercepts it. McSweeney’s numbers are 3 for 7, 26 yards.

Neal Seaman comes in for Rocco who was crushed on the last play of the last drive. Mount goes three and out…until Wesley commits a roughing the kicker punter to keep the drive alive.

    Mount Union 10 Wesley 0 – 14:20 2nd

  5. 15 min to kickoff at UWW. Chilly and crisp, but sunny with a mild breeze. Nearly a foot of snow still sits on parts of the bleachers. Here we go!

  6. Warhawk:

Both video and audio are linked off the front page. You’ll need to upload Microsoft Silver Light for video, which your computer will start automatically when you get to the NCAA site.

  7. MAybe MU shouldn’t give Wesley any thing to get them fired uip at half!!!! Woofing at the Wesley palyers going off the field at half

  8. Levell Coppage takes it 55 yards to the house after the Warhawks defense holds on fourth down. Schebler’s extra point good.

    UW-Whitewater 7 Linfield 0 – 6:21 1st

Wesley and Mount Union kick off second half.

  9. Wesley gets on the board as McSweeney connects with Sean McAndrew for a touchdown. A big completion to DeAndre Fowlkes that set Wesley up for first and goal keyed the score.

    Mount Union 10 Wesley 7 – 6:02 3rd

  10. combo of going into wind and 2nd string QB is severely limiting mount’s offense. wesley playing well, too.

  11. Cecil Shorts III now in at quarterback for Mount Union.

    Mount Union 10 Wesley 7 – A couple minutes left in 3rd

  12. linfield scores, down 10-7.

mount defense has been excellent, only thing keeping them in the game. let’s see if a 3rd string QB and the wind helps mount.

  13. Aaron Boehme gets a huge gain and a rush inside UW-Whitewater’s 20 and then finds Ryan Henderson for the TD. PAT good.

    UW-Whitewater 10 Linfield 7 – 3:27 Q3

Meanwhile Mount Union forces Wesley to kick from their own inside and is now inside Wesley’s 10. Shorts scampers into the end zone for the score.

    Mount Union 17 Wesley 7 – 12:14 left

  14. Close game so far in WW. Lots of defense keeping both offenses in check. Big stop by Linfield to end the half, might be a momentum turner. Linfield should have some confidence coming out of half. Looks like a good one.

  15. i think, as wesley had a little to do with mount not scoring 55, mount had a little to do with wesley not “playing the A game.”

  16. I’ll give Wesley credit…played a good game. Mount O line though did very well…all the Mount O could do was run the ball, and Wesley couldn’t stop it. Hope K. Rocco is able to play next week.

  17. Linfield scores on an Aaron Boehme draw to put UW-Whitewater behind.

    Linfield 14 UW-Whitewater 10 – 3rd Quarter.

FINAL: Mount Union 24 Wesley 7

  18. 4th qtr UWW comes back (in black) with a big play drive but it stalls inside the ‘Cats 10 yd line. 17 (Linfield kicked a ~35 yd FG to start the qtr) to 13 with 12:36 left to play.

  19. you’re right wesley fan. that INT in the end zone, and the previous one, really hurt wesley.

linfield up 17-13 and with the ball with about 11 minutes left
