Game day: Last chances

I just spent an hour plugging games into the D3soccer.com scoreboard and am more than ready to turn my attention to football. The game I’m most interested in is conveniently provided to me by HDNet, so I’m at home watching the DePauw/Wabash game on the big screen, in HD.

I was at this game last year, at Wabash, but I think I might have a better view today.

Aside from that, of course, the five head-to-head championship games, Pool C teams trying to win out and Pool B teams basically secure and looking to preserve their seeding.

We’ll also track who’s in the field, with 11 bids left to hand out.

Have at it! Big day! We’ll have a final set of playoff projections tonight, hopefully pretty early.

Closed to comments temporarily while system load is high.

  1. I’m going to let Ryan Tipps handle the Monon Bell updates, since he’s on-site.

Curry leads Maine Maritime 21-20 approaching the half.

  2. Kickoff is just minutes away here in Indiana for the Wabash/DePauw Monon Bell rivalry.

The stands are mostily filled, but a lot of people still trickling in. DePauw’s band played Wabash’s school song while the Bash spirit corps sang it. Then they turned around to face the DePauw crowd and played DPU’s song with the Wabash guys side-by-side in the middle of the field.

In 14 years of seeing this game, it was a good step for camaradeire and spirit that hasn’t always been there.

  3. Should be a great day as two top-notch quarterbacks square off. The skies are clear and there’s a good breeze coming in from the south end of the field. Hope to see a lot from each team’s passing attack.

  4. Bad snap on field goal attempt with five seconds left for Union leaves the Dutchmen leading Susquehanna 10-7 at the half. This is for the Liberty League title.

  5. Wabash moves the ball to inside the 10 on two big pass plays, then fails to get in the endzone. They settle for a FG attempt. No good! Score still 0-0 with 4:59 left in the first.

  6. The kick sailed left, and the stadium erupted in a flurry of black and gold thunder sticks, which is seems like most every DPU student is carrying today.

  7. Listening to the H-SC/R-MC game. Sedlar just threw an interception in very sloppy conditions. Don’t know the score yet, but the INT was almost returned for a TD.

1st and goal from the 3, but R-MC stopped in the backfield for a loss of 2. Eventually, the Yellow Jackets score.

Just heard this INT was Sedlar’s second on the day. R-MC leads 7-0.

On next drive, H-SC moves the ball down the field and Sedlar connects with Gillette in the end zone.

  8. Is it just me or is there an inordinately high percentage of female students in DePauw’s PSA/promo that just aired on HDNet?

  9. More rivalry updates that are on LiveStats:

Amherst up 17-14 on Williams. The two teams have combined for fewer than 40 yards rushing but nearly 300 passing.

Ithaca up 13-6 over Cortland State. Each team has posted 159 yards of offense. 11:35 left in the half.

  10. DePauw moves from their own 30 to Bash’s 30 with one big pass play to Alex Koors. The Wabash defender just got outrun, and Dick’s pass was perfect!

  11. DePauw connects again with Koors for a first down at the 4 yard line. Between Koors, Bryan Mulligan and Brayden Dahlstrom, the receiving corps is wicked good.

Add another guy to that list: Nathan Evans (a Crafordsville native, of all things) brings in the pass for 6.

Pat: He wouldn’t have factored the wind into his pass? I mean, that hit his guy in stride about two steps in front of the defender.

  12. Back in Virginia, R-MC leads 14-7. The Yellow Jackets are held to three and out after intercepting Sedlar for the third time today.

In Pennsylvania, Ursinus leads Dickinson 14-0.

  13. In Virginia, Craig Warnament reaches the end zone for Hampden-Sydney, tying The Game at 14.

In Indiana, Spud Dick gets a bad snap in the shotgun, and DPU gets the ball back at the 27, losing 20 yards on the play. 4th down and 23, knocking them out of what seemed like certain points down by the goal line. Timeout.

Tigers kick is blocked! Wabash gets the ball back at the 20 with 57.2 seconds left in the half.

  14. Wabash’s Kody LeMond gets the team within field goal range with 16 seconds left. Ball at the 20.

Quick pass, ball now at the 9. 11 seconds left on the clock. Timeout Bash.

The red erupts in cheers as Wabash gets into the endzone. Not to be outdone, the black and gold get to celebrate too as the PAT is blocked.

  15. Maine Maritime takes a lead on Curry 42-35 in the fourth quarter.

Elsewhere, Ursinus really having its way with Dickinson. Jumped out to a 21-3 lead, gave up two scores but back up 35-17. Dickinson needs the W to stay in the Pool C race. Ursinus not out of Centennial title contention.

  16. Hampden-Sydney is up 20-7 at halftime.

Just got the halftime stats here at the Monon Bell game.
DePauw’s Spud Dick is 18-22 for 175 yards. He has 1 TD and 1 INT.
Wabash’s Matt Hudson is 9-19 for 158 yards. Has a touchdown.

Neither team is rushing particularly well, with Bash at 10 yards and DPU at 42 yards, though part of that is that 20-yard loss on a bad snap.

  17. Maine Maritime is IN.

Wins the NEFC title with a 36-yard touchdown pass on the final play of the game to beat Curry 48-42.

  18. Touchdown Wabash on a great run by junior Derrick Yoder. Attempt to go for 2 fails, and the score stands at 12-7.

I felt Wabash had been outplayed in most of the first half, but they’re gaining more momentum and better earning (for lack of a better word) their place in this close game.

  19. Tigers use muscle and pound the ball into the endzone. They go for 2 and fail.

    DPU leads WC 13-12.

As the kickoff ensues, fans on both sides are getting louder. There’s definitley a growth in excitement with this being just a one-point game between one-loss long-time rivals.

Bash answers back quickly, 50+ yard pass for a score. Another attempt at going for 2…..Fails.

  20. With Maine Maritime winning and Union losing, the committee will most likely send MM to the Kean/Montclair winner regardless of seeding. Someone else could be screwed out of a home game.

  21. Wabash scores again a couple of plays after intercepting a 3rd down pass at the DPU 8 yard line. Hudson had a nice throw into the endzone.

    WC leads 25-13.

  22. A win today almost certainly gives Wabash a Pool C bid, and there will be few teams playing next weekend with this kind of momentum. Wabash is playing this game like they were expected to have the past two years. And I’ve never seen Hudson performing better.

Another Wabash touchdown with 5:14 left in the game. Bash goes up by three scores, 32-13.

  23. 2 Levell Coppage’s TD runs to start the 3rd quarter has moved UWW to a 37-7 lead on UW-La Crosse at La Crosse. 3:33 remaining in 3rd. Matt Blanchard replaces Jeff Donovan at QB

  24. How is it that Willamette is not even considered as a potential playoff pick? They lose to #4 Linfield by 3, beat Cal Lu, basically annihilate all other opponents other than the first game of the season, and have remained in the top 25 the entire season. Somebody enlighten me!!!

  25. Washington and Jefferson (9-1) walloped everyone except Thomas More, to whom they lost, 14-7. Seems kind of ridiculous to find teams with two losses in Pool B and C getting the nod over the Presidents.

Wold have included this in later posts, but could not log in (yes, am registered!
