The road to Salem

FIFTY YARD LINE — Arrived in Salem this afternoon for the presentation of the Gagliardi Trophy as well as this afternoon’s practices.

The weather is beautiful here. Currently breezy and low 60s. Head on down to Salem and take this game in — this year is a great opportunity to see the game and the weather at its best.

Field looks alright but not perfect. A couple bare spots that will probably be painted green by the time we hit kickoff.

On the way down here, on the actual road to Salem, Ryan and I passed a pairt of trucks, one of which was being towed. Those trucks just pulled into the stadium — they’re the television production crew.

Reminder that we hit the air for pregame two hours before kickoff. http://www.d3football.com/audio/

Stop in and say hi on the blog when you get to Salem.

  1. The best of luck to both teams. I hope all fans of D3 football get treated to a great game (I think we all know it will be).

I especially wish UWW the best, and I know you can play your best game on Saturday.

Lets hope noone gets hurt, and we all have a good time.

  2. I read Keith McMillan’s legitimate critique of Mt. Union’s 2 QB platoon system. You may not be familiar with another QB platoon system that worked pretty well for Mt. Union’s 1970 team that went 8-1. The QBs: Bill Ungar and Larry Kehres!

  3. I posted this earlier but since this is the Road to Salem….

At O’Hare airport this afternoon I ran into four WW fans headed to Roanoke

A dad who went to ONU and his son is playing soccer there.

Another MUC alumni heading home to Omaha.

All talking D3 football….and I reminded the ones not coming that the game is on TV.

  4. I recall seeing quite a bit of purple on my flight from Charlotte last year…we’ll see if I run into any from Philadelphia tomorrow morning…I’m doubting it, but tis possible.

  5. I always see D3 in the airports. Saw Oberlin at BWI and Cleveland last week, and saw Ursinus at BWI too. But the best was last year when I was headed to the Monon Bell game, I was in the security line at Dulles behind two people headed to Dutchman’s Shoes!

From what I read/recall, Mount pulled out last night about 6 p.m., travelling by bus. There was a sendoff on or near campus, read about it on their website.

UWW left campus yesterday at noon, practiced at UW-Madison and then flew to Roanoke at 7 p.m. At least that’s what I gleaned from the PLAYER BLOGS, baby!

I’m gonna be all over those for the on-air insight. ESPN, you better step your game up. There’s only room for one ‘best color analyst’ on Saturday!

(I think maybe I’m missing the competition from actually playing)

  6. I fly to OH once a month for work and usually wear a Mount Union Football shirt on my way home. About 3-4 times now there has been a TSA worker who is an ONU grad who gives me crap about my MTU gear. He joked one time about never beating the Raiders. Today I had a hat, sweatshirt and T-shirt. The other TSA guys were giving him crap about not knowing how to count or tell time…

  7. Interesting that the USA Today article talks about the possibility of Salem losing out to Coppell, TX in future years. It is a shame because I really enjoyed my first trip there last year and will definately be enjoying this weekend. Coppell is just typical suburban DFW. Easy to get to but no charm. It looks like local attendance is an issue though.

  8. Yeah,
it said Coppell put in a bid. Which is nice and all … but I mean, Muskingum technically has a chance each time it lines up against Mount Union too.

I don’t have any knowledge of the situation, but Coppell might either have to guarantee more cash to the NCAA or do something really spectacular to lure the game from Salem. As the story also noted, small-school championships are getting rather comfortable there.

I hope you get out of Philly in the A.M. FOGGY

And if it keeps up you are sure to see a lot of RED!!!

  10. Somebody mentioned Canton the other day, and it got me wondering if they had ever bid … or did it just sound like a good idea.

I don’t think I’ve ever asked who else bids, because it’s not really news until we hear it’s not going to be in Salem. My bad.

  11. Hello,

I’ll be running a “live” video blog of the Stagg Bowl here:

    http://staggbowl.blogspot.com/

I’ll be turning around game highlights as quickly as possible with the help of Jumpcut.com and the power of embedded video clips. After the Stagg Bowl is over I’ll put together a more “offical” video clip highlight of Saturday’s game.

Right now the blog has a great photo highlight clip for the 2005 Stagg Bowl that Mt. Union backer, Mike Dellosa put together last year and there is also a 2004 highlight clip of the Linfield/UMHB Stagg Bowl.

  12. Sitting in the US Airways Club at Philadelphia International Airport…got here early, not sure why…flight isn’t until 10am. I suppose I wanted options if my flight to Roanoke cancelled. As it stands right now, 12 flights are cancelled on the boards and the visibility is only measured in miles, so while officially 0 miles, it isn’t totally terrible.

I’ll be on a prop plane and somewhere I’ve developed the notion that those are more likely to take off in this weather than other regional jets as the prop planes have their own runway.

As of now – flight is on time. But there’s PLENTY of time to cancel.

Where’s the sun? Burn this stuff off…what a tradeoff for it NOT being 30 degrees.

  13. Visibility has improved…a bit…up to 1 mile. Flight now delayed 40 minutes…which could be just like any normal Friday under perfect conditions in Philly.

  14. Is anyone staying over saturday night after the game or am I gona be the only one out hopefully celebrating…If mount wins that is..If not i’ll be drowing myself in the hotel pool..

I would like to thank D3football.com for allowing all of us speak our peace on this site all year. All of you guys do a great job and all that work is appretiated.

I have to say. Its been nice this year in the fact that there isnt alot of trash talk. Both teams and fans have realized that Both of the teams deserve respect. I know both coaches are expecting their teams to respect the other one. Good Luck to both teams.

This Mount Union Fan is expecting a very close game. Go Mount Union!

This is how it should be done! Settled on the field. Not some Poll

  16. Labdaddy,

I saw pictures that Ryan took of the Raider practice yesterday and Garcon was not wearing a hand brace. But, I doubt we’ll get an official “Status Report” prior to game time. Good to keep the opposition in the dark.

  17. As I have written before and will write again, “If you were to flip a coin to decide a winner for this game – the coin would land on its edge”.

I really hope UW Whitewater wins this thing!

  18. You cant quantify the heart and desire of these UWW kids. Poured their hearts out in the off season, they worked harder then MU they deserve this. UWW 45- MU 17

  19. Flush the Johnnies,

“they worked harder then MU”… How can you make an idiotic statement like that?

And 45-17 UWW… The last time anyone scored more than 40 pts on MTU was 1999. That was a triple OT win by the Raiders over JCU 57-51.

You must be smoking some serious crack up there in MN…

  20. (This is Pat Cummings using Pat Coleman’s computer)

    Flush

I don’t know if you are qualified enough to say that UWW has worked harder than MU…in fact, I know you aren’t qualified enough to say it. So while I respect your ability to post a score, your rationale is laughable.

  21. I’ll be heading out on the UW-W Band bus to Salem this evening. Even through the loss last year I had a blast and I’m looking forward to an even better time this year. Man, I’m just so excited!

I would try posting some sort of intelligent rationale for a score prediction, but I have none. I get all of my information on D3 football from Kieth, Pat, the rest of the D3Football.com crew and other posters here on the Daily Dose. All I can say is that this is most likely going to be the toughest game of the year for both teams. I wish everyone on both sides the best of luck, but of course my heart’s pulling for a Warhawk victory.

I’m student teaching right now and I ran into a substitute at my school this week who went to UW-W in the late ’60s or ’70’s. Not only is he an alum, but he played football under coach Berezowitz. He shared a few good stories with me and we had a good conversation about this year’s team. It was a blast and I can’t wait to see him again and tell him about the experience that is the Stagg Bowl.

Signing off from Whitewater, see you in Salem!

  22. Flush,

Even if your prediction of a WW big margin win over MU comes true, you think anyone on this post will think of you as a football guru? Isn’t gonna happen.
