Game day updates

We’re barely underway and I’m about ready to close the book on Wheaton. Here’s the way the first six minutes have gone so far:
Wheaton got the ball first, punted.
Punt went 26 yards.
Then Pete Ittersagen, Wheaton’s top corner, got hurt.
Nate Kmic ran for a 52-yard touchdown.
Wheaton went three-and-out, giving up only its eighth sack of the season.
Wheaton punted for 25 yards. Mount Union ball on the Wheaton 35.

… as I write this Wheaton picks the ball off.

  1. Relax

Ok Kehres has a better record and Stagg Bowls and has been at the Mount a long time. I’m not trying to steal his thunder, everyone take a chill pill for God’s sakes. Fredenberg beat Kehres in their first meeting in 04.

  2. I agree, Kehres……UMHB shut down WW’s offense without justin beaver. still a great feat. however having beaver in the lineup changes that game, as well as the gameplan for both sides. They will most likely have to put more guys on the line, which might open up the passing game………Kelppe is a great D3 football player. He is too small to move on to the next level.

  3. Interested on people’s thoughts about SJFC-Rowan match up Saturday.
I know what we have but was hoping someone well informed can tell me more about Rowan’s squad this year.
    Thanks.

  4. All of those who are looking ahead to a UMHB/UWW semi game must be out of your minds! Please look back and tell us all the last time Wesley lost a home game.

  5. The last time Wesley lost a home game is THIS SATURDAY.

I think SJF will tip Rowan. I had Springfield going to the final four in Pick ’em, so now I’m going with the team that beat them. Tough ballclub.

I respect the heck out of Rowan, but I think SJF will pull it out. Great game it will be – good luck to both teams.

  6. sjfc: I’ve been to almost all of Rowan’s games. Here’s a quick scouting report:

    Offense:First 8 games 65% run & 35% pass, last 3 games about 60% pass & 40% run.
No huddle with 90% from shotgun. Small but quick backs. Lot’s of traps between the tackles. Small & inexperienced receivers but a top notch QB. Most pass plays to the sidelines or short outside the tackles. Rowan will rarely through anything over the middle more than 10 yds. (hopefully the Rowan coaches might read this and know that the middle has been open for 3 years). The QB is not afraid to throw into coverge and has the arm to do so.

Defense: Excellent front 3 and very good linebackers who loves to pressure the QB. Secondary is fast but susceptible to the big play and the occasional long beat. More prone to running up the middle than the outside. If the opposing QB gets time (and that has not been easy so far), you can pass against the “D” with good success.

summing up: Rowan can score quickly but tends to have drives stalled because of it’s own mistakes rather tha the opponents play. The defense has been very good but it can be picked on, especially as the game wears on.

Keys to beating Rowan: Protect your QB & control the clock, pressure their QB and take away the outside passing lanes.

  7. In my opinion there is no better player at his position than Kleppe. You can argue other players but Kleppe is the best defensive lineman in D3. Whether he can play on a different level or not I don’t know but at his present level he is the best. As for Beaver I was simply amazed by his performance last week after such a layoff. Props also go to his OLine that certainly have had an extraordinary season this year……helping quite a few different backs to some impressive stats……Should be a great game against the Johnnies….FLUSH THE JOHNS and POUND THE ROCK!!…..

  8. UW Whitwater bracket was by far the toughest bracket in the playoffs. So few losses by the teams in it. St. John’s is tough and will give a great effort.

St. John’s seed was a little low for me, but that is what you get when you lose the season finale.

I think UWW will pull it out – ALL THE WAY TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP BABY!! YEAH!! TOUGH AS NAILS!!

If the CCIW can’t win it all (they ran into the OAC and took their medicine this year – actually, the OAC has been force feeding the CCIW medicine for quite some time in the playoffs darn it), then I want it to be a WIAC team.

SOMEBODY PLEASE STOP NATE KMIC!!! – but not until UWW does it in the Stagg Bowl (Pick ’em reasons).

  9. Good Lord!! I just saw a picture of Kleppe on the profiles for the Guoyoolttdaiaoiesrals1i Trophy. That guy looks huge! Can anyone tell me his hight and weight?

That dude from Cortland from last year looked even bigger – how big it he?

  10. Kleppe is 6-0 290 and he can play on the next level if given a chance. Wesley has played at home 9 times this year and on the road only 3. Explain that, someone please. Wesley is tough and UMHB will have to play their A game to win. Go UMHB and St.Johns. I would like to see UMHB play another home game in the playoffs. Hey! if UWW and UMHB win then we get to see how Mr. Beaver performs against a stingy run D. Go Cru!!

  11. Purple Crush,

Thanks for the 411 on Kleppe. Any word on that Haas guy from Cortland State’s 2005 team?

I wish Mary Hardin-Baylor was on the other side of the bracket. That way they could potentially play UWW in the Stagg. I really do respect MHB a ton, and I root for them – until they play UWW. I hate it when two teams I like have to throw down. Oh well, that’s the way the ball bounces. If MHB beats UWW, then I’ll be rooting for them to win it all (my Pick ’em will be screwed).

    Here’s to some good football.

  12. Shoot, you mean height and weight would’ve been a good thing to include in a capsule? GUH. I’ll add them.

Haas is still there in 2006, btw.

  13. SeanGOP,

Sweet way to skirt the Wesley home game issue. How about you Purple Crush, care to comment on those looking ahead to a UMHB/UWW game?

  14. PurpleCrush
Wesley played 7 regular season home games this year!!! If you look back almost every year Wesley plays more road games because that’s the only way they can get a full schedule. Not only that but they have bused half way across the country to get games so maybe they deserve a home tilted schedule for once…. And they haven’t lost on the turf since it was put in…

  15. Amen PA_Wesleyfan!

Early on in the season I asked the question regarding the small amount of exposure and press on this website regarding Wesley, the response as I recall was that they had a “weak” schedule. A quick phone call to the head coach Mike Drass, and he will tell you that it has been virtually impossible to get teams to play them.

  16. PA_wesleyfan,

Chill dude!! I think it will be a geat game and there is a first time for everything. I wish I could go see it but work comes first. I will try to listen to it.

  17. Lax99,

I’m not falling for the trap, rant all you want, clone. UMHB will play hard so let the best team win. Peace!!

  18. Speaking of the Wesley-UMHB shootout….

Is it just a coincidence that Texas’s most deadly gunslinger was a guy named John WESLEY HARDIN?

  19. I think it is safe to say that there will be no easy games for any team the rest of the way out, unless the football team’s name rhymes with Mount Union – just kidding, they will have their hands full too.

    Purple Crush,

What is on the menue for game food? What’s your tailgating taste? Brats? Steaks? Pickled herring?

  20. lg1970,

That crazy dude shot a man for snoring too loud! I don’t think anyone will be sleeping at that game.

  21. Purple Crush,

    re: Lax99,

I’m not falling for the trap, rant all you want, clone. UMHB will play hard so let the best team win. Peace!!

Are you all of the sudden having issues articulating your feelings? Above when you said clone, what did you mean? clown perhaps? come on, you can do better than that! I truly and simply was asking you what you most recent opinion was. If you go back and read your inserts on Nov. 19th through the 21st, you had nothing but simple “smack” talk for PA_Wesleyfan and Wesley’s team. PA graciously declined your taunts, yet since then you seem to be back peddling on your teams “eminate” domination of Wesley.

Again I wasn’t taunting you, I simply wanted to have you state your position. You didn’t really mean to call me a Clown did you?

  22. “A quick phone call to the head coach Mike Drass, and he will tell you that it has been virtually impossible to get teams to play them.”

    That’s not what Rowan says.

“You can argue other players but Kleppe is the best defensive lineman in D3.”

    Sakman1111,
This might be true, but how many teams have you seen before making this statement? How many prominent linemen in D3 can you name?

It’s been a long season of people saying, assuredly: “Person X is the best Y in D3” when they know they watch the same team every week, meaning they’ve seen 10-12 teams of the 234.

Why not just say “he’s the best X I’ve seen?”

    Lax99,
Clone is what Jim Rome calls his listeners, I believe.

    Crush,
You said Fredenburg was the best coach in D3 … why do we have to chill with the responses? Can’t handle the truth?

umhbcrufan16, myword … thanks for the honesty and insight. It can be rare around these parts.

    wiacwatcher, you too.

That was my only point about Beaver. I think he would have made a difference, but not all that much. He’s quick with his cuts and superb at finishing runs … It’s weird to say he’s the best back in Division III and yet he wouldn’t have made all that much difference against UMHB, but that in fact is my position.

  23. Crush,
you are entitled to your opinion, most certainly. But if they’re wacky and you’re sharing them with us, what are we going to do but respond?

Fredenberg is definitely the man, but your use of the “hands down” part, when the numbers, common sense, etc. prove there is another “hands down” best coach in D3, I mean … I don’t know what you think we should say if we choose not to ignore you.

I love head-to-head as a measurement as much as any stat there is, but it’s not enough here. Eight titles, nice how you brush those off “Ok Kehres has a better record and Stagg Bowls” … uh, aren’t those what they play for? If you can’t measure your success by having eight more championships than the next guy, what can you do?

Your statement is akin to a Jets fan saying Mangini is a better coach than Bill Belichick because the Jets just beat the Patriots. It’s like “hello, there’s this other data here you might want to consider.”

The preposterous part is that you weren’t man enough to be like “Oh yeah, duh, I forgot Kehres” or “I’m just a big UMHB fan.” You actually came back to defend the point.

It’s your opinion, you enjoy it … but if you’re out here trying to sound credible when you pass off your opinion on us, do allow us to respond with the proper amount of incredulousness when necessary.

And they say opinions can’t be wrong!

    🙂

  24. SeanGOP,

Great response!!! The website I visited noted the alleged shooting as a rumor. Nevertheless, neither team should be Asleep At The Wheel.

  25. Congratulations to D3football.com; 7 of the 8 remaining playoffs teams were picked in the preseason poll in positions #1-#8. Only St. John Fisher’s missed the list, and Linfield missed the playoffs.

Based on the preseason poll; it will be MU, UWW, Rowan and MHB making it to the next round.

Great website: I can’t wait until this weekend; should be some good hard nosed football. Any issues with weather for the weekend? In Wisconsin, a cold snap is expected. It should not impact St. John’s though. What about the other games?

  26. 3D

I think I have to concur with LAXX. I wonder who from Rowan made that statement. Or maybe Rowan wanted a PennSate deal of 3 home games to one????

  27. Since I haven’t seen either of them ever play in person and since it is almost impossible to go unnoticed by the NFL given today’s technology laden scouting (and given that small running backs from East Stroudsburg, Kutztown, Princeton and Villanova are in or have played in the league)……..who, if not both of them, has the better shot at an NFL career…..Beaver or Kmic?

  28. D3Keith: thanks for the props on my response to Purple Crush. He certainly is getting everyone’s attention, but I am more into the game itself than the “we are great, you are not” school of posting. As I have said on the ASC board and elsewhere, if Warrick is throwing the ball like he did last year–I was there–we better bring our A game. Having said that, I certainly believe UMHB will bring it and we have an excellent chance to advance.

  29. D3Keith Laxx99 and umhbcrufan16,

You are entitled to your opinion as well, sometimes we have to agree to disagree. I have said that the game will be close. Yes, I am a CRU fan but that does not change the unbias opinion. The “hands down” comment may have been over the top but UMHB did defeat the Mount in Alliance. I began some posts just to get some rants going and it looks like it worked.

Lax99 look up the word clone, it’s a figure of speech. Wesley 28 UMHB 10. I have posted this score before but looks like some people pick and choose what they want to read. I’m OUT clones!!

  30. dukefinadv-
I Hate to be the pessimist- but in my opinion neither Beaver nor Kimic will make it to the next level- or this 6-foot Kleppe guy someone mentioned earlier. There are at least 20 Beaver/Kimics in D2, 40 in 1AA, and 80 in D1.
They would be a good fit for AFL2.

Just trying to keep it real folks.

  31. Keith, you got me on that one. Should have said Kleppe is the best player at his position I have seen this year. Since I am making statements I think Whitewater’s OLine is the best I HAVE SEEN IN THE LAST 5 YEARS and I have seen a lot of teams in that time……

  32. rigg0123,

You are probably right about D3 players going to the next level. It is rare for that to happen, and when it does all D3 players and fans cheer them on regardless of where they played.

There are probably more like 250 Beavers and Kmics in D1, and they like Beaver and Kimc have great talent. I’m just hoping that Beaver has a little more in the title game (if they make it there).

  33. Does anyone out there have the average weight of the UWW offensive and defensive lines? As well as the Mount Union offensive and defensive lines? Heck, I’d like to see that information for all remaining teams.

I would like to see that comparison. Of course it takes more than a guy who never misses a meal – it takes talent. Just curious.

  34. Keith and Purple Crush,

Thanks for the info regarding “clone”. I am not familiar with that vernacular in the sports world. I’ve never been a fan of Jim Rome, I did however enjoy watching him get tossed like a rag doll from the Ram’s QB Jim Everrett when Rome called him Chrissy Everrett on his show years back.

Purple, as for your post of a 28 to 10 score favoring Wesley, I have yet to see you say anything like that. maybe I missed that thread.
Again, I was not trying to get your Goat, merely inquiring what your current thought on the Wesley/UMHB game as kickoff nears!

  35. I know Wesley is a great team, but I just don’t see them winning 28-10. If that does happen, then they are more than a great team.

In my personal opinion, I think Mary Hardin-Baylor is even better. If Dickinson can hang 21 on Wesley, then I think Mary Hardin-Baylor can do a little better than 10 points.

I think Mary Hardin-Baylor has played a tougher schedule. Maybe I’m wrong – who knows (I’m sure someone will tell me).

One thing I know I’m 100% right about, is both teams deserve to be in the position they are now in. Props to both.

  36. Laxx99, here is the post below.

    GPurple Crush Says:

The 26th of November, 2006 at 12:37 am

I will eat SOME crow as UMHB’s win today was sloppy at best. They were ahead 27-7 and driving to score when they fumbled not to metion a TD was called back for a hold that no one saw. At the half W&J only had 1 first down. UMHB slacked off the second half and made the score close at the end as UMHB gave up prevent yards. W&J never had control of the game that’s for sure. I am disappointed that UMHB lacked discipline and slacked the entire 4th QTR. I think the officials called a decent game, they were from the Northwest WA, CA and OR. Wesley will beat UMHB by 4 Td’s if UMHB plays the same next week. All I can say is don’t blitz to many times because Wesley has a great passing game. Wesley will not gain much on the ground but won’t need to if they can call the same schemes that worked last year. Wesley 28-UMHB 10
    o back

  37. Dont overlook st. johns…they might be really small but i have a feeling john G. and his amazing staff will pull out a few bags of tricks…last year was a fluke…st. johns had 9 FUMBLES and 34-7 is a blowout but not as bad if some team had 9 FUMBLES….good luck to both teams but i have a feeling SJU is gonna win

  38. Sean GOP, you are right in saying that UMHB has played the tougher schedule. In fact in my opinion of the 8 remaining teams they have probably played the toughest schedule.
    Nov 18 #6 Hardin-Simmons University
Nov 25 #20 Washington and Jefferson
    Dec 2 #3 Wesley College
All three teams are in the top 20 of D3 football, I don’t think any other team can say that

  39. SeanGOP (and anybody else interested)

Here are the stats on as many lines as I could find.

    UWW O Line: LT-6’2″ 285, LG-6’6″ 308, C-5’9″ 256, RG-5’11” 286, RT-6’2″ 271, TE-6’4″ 247

Any mistakes, please feel free to correct them.

  40. Tattisbogo, I believe you left out another pretty good team from the list of UMHB opponents…*points to name* 🙂

  41. Although I don’t doubt that you know their line better than I do, and thank you for the stats, but I’m curious why you had both of my listings for them as being wrong. The two that I listed I got from the All Conference Listing. Are those guys injured, or are the stats on them just inaccurate?
