We’re barely underway and I’m about ready to close the book on Wheaton. Here’s the way the first six minutes have gone so far:
Wheaton got the ball first, punted.
Punt went 26 yards.
Then Pete Ittersagen, Wheaton’s top corner, got hurt.
Nate Kmic ran for a 52-yard touchdown.
Wheaton went three-and-out, giving up only its eighth sack of the season.
Wheaton punted for 25 yards. Mount Union ball on the Wheaton 35.
… as I write this Wheaton picks the ball off.
Momentum all UW-LaCrosse.
UW-W overcomes a penalty with another Beaver run to near midfield before stalling and punting after starting on their own 14 AGAIN.
LA-X takes over on their own 18 with 5:31 to go in the third with a chance to take the lead.
Let’s see. Overall OAC record 35-8. Capital and Mount Union both win easily today. Of the 8 losses suffered by OAC teams a majority have been to Mt. Union. Is there a conference close to the OAC? Shouldn’t OAC teams be split so they don’t play until the final?
Rowan is the “Timex” of the DIII football world….they take a (verbal) lickin’ but keep on tickin’…..
UW-W defense shows up and LA-X punts from own endzone.
UW-W starts on LA-X 35 with 4:00 to go in third quarter and completes big third down pass to TE at 23 yardline.
Offense fails to convert on third down AGAIN from 19 and settles for ANOTHER field goal–high snap.
LA-X takes over on 42.
Hawks need to wakeup or season will end today
capfan, why would we want to see a Stagg Bowl blowout? Non-OAC teams have actually beaten Mount Union in the Stagg Bowl or have at least been competitive far more often than not in the past eight years. Can’t say the same for OAC teams in the playoffs.
UW-LAX takes lead 21-17 shredding UW-W defense with the run and scoring on three-yard pass.
UW-W hasn’t played well at all and with 14:33 to go in game, UW-W needs a great fourth quarter to overcome Special Teams miscues and inability to finish drives–momentum all on LA-X side.
LaCross takes lead 21-14 over Whitewater, 4th quarter. Special teams are killing the warhawks
(Beaver 185 rushing yards through three quarters.)
UW-W quarterback fumbles with 11:25 left UW-LAX ball on 45 yard line
Anybody have a computer link to play-by-play for the Warhawk game?
LA-X goes for it on fourth down from 34 with 6:18 left in game.
Throws deep — incomplete.
In big games it is always about turnovers and special teams.
By the way capfan, I have nothing but respect for Mount Union but top to bottom the WIAC is a better league.
The UW-W coaching staff was worried going into today’s game because they know how hard it is to beat LA-X once in a year, let alone twice.
Keith McMillan was in the stands for the first game and saw UW-W dominate UW-LAX. That does not happen very often.
Here we go for the ballgame Hawks down 4
W&J has just returned a fumble 59 yards for a TD. Score now 27-20 UMHB (extra point wide left).
UW-W finally stops UW-L offense. UW-W gets ball back. UW-W touchdown pass!! UW-W goes 71 yards in two plays, one rush rush by Beaver, then TD pass. UW-W 24 UW-L 21.
UW-W scores on 53 yard strike and regains lead 24-21 with 5:39 remaining.
Let’s hope that energizes the defense!
Hey Fisher fans and former players….WE DID IT TODAY..home game next week against Rowan
Wow…couldnt be prouder of Vos and co. for shutting down arguably the two best runners in D3 last two weeks…or is Robinson the best?
SJFC1993…SEE YA NEXT WEEK
82
UW-W defense wakes up. Intercept UW-L with 4:23 left. UW-L still has 3 timeouts left
UW-LAX QB throws a pick!!
It is not over yet but defense may have just saved the day.
4:23 left bal on UW-W 43.
Great game
UMHB now up 30-20 with just over 8 minutes left. Newcomb had a 55-yard, wind-aided field goal in the first quarter.
SJFF82: If he is healthy, Justin Beaver is as good as any D3 running back.
UW-LAX forces punt and takes over on own 21 (no timeouts left).
3:00 to go.
UW-W has to punt, UW-L gets ball back just over 2 minutes left no timeouts remaining. UW-W finally gets sack on first down.
UW-W gets their first sack of game on first down.
2nd and 15, QB pressure, incomplete, illegal forward pass (past LOS)
3rd and 20 (2:08 remaining) incomplete
4th and 20 QB tackeld on 8
Warhawks might survive
UW-L goes for it on 4th and twenty and gets sacked again. UW-W just has to run out clock. 46 seconds left UW-W 24 UW-L 21. Awesome game
1st and goal from eight yard line victory formation
Not great performance today but I think the best team won.
What a game.
W&J has the ball at their own 1 with 2:13 left. Score still 30-20.
With 5.6 seconds left, score is now 30-27. W&J will onsides kick…
Game over. Final is 30-27 UMHB.
So much for all the talk about CMU. I guess those who were saying CMU played a weak schedule were correct. CMU is a classy team. They just met a better team. Jackson did not start because the coach sat him down for discipline problems. The freshman has a lot to learn. It should be a great game next week between Wesley/UMHB.
Thought everyone would like to know that the NCAA blocks the Strecth broadcasts.
I wouldn’t go that far. I’d be OK with CMU being in the No. 24 spot in the poll when all is said and done. But yeah, there’s a whole world outside of what CMU has seen this year and eventually reality is a shocker.
BTW, still one game going as St. John’s is up 21-3.
SJU game over– SJU 21 Whitworth 3. Great game by the Pirates, who stopped the Johnnies several times inside the 10. But SJU earns their rematch in Whitewater.
I am a loyal d3hoops/football person and spent a good chunk of my existence on this earth coaching in the midwest (not football nor basketball), but had many opportunities to watch the OAC routinely. In addition my teams regularly encountered many teams from the Wisconsin and Minnesota areas. I realy admire their talents and coaching, but for “coltfan” to make a ridiculous statement that the Wisconsin league “from top to bottom” is better than the OAC is ludicrous. You actually need to watch some OAC action outside of the Purple Raiders to appreciate what the OAC has in football and basketball especially. You have a better chance to make a case that the Badgers should be in the BCS title game. Try that since it’s more believable.
Pat:
I do not know what the teams were like that CMU played but I do know their two 1,000 yards rushers did nothing against Wesley. I wonder what their stats. were, I bet not much. CMU had to start passing early and that is not their game. So many of these D3 teams that win their conference titles find themselves in a whole different league during the playoffs. Obviously the best 32 D3 teams are not in the playoffs.
That’s always been true, though remember the UAA does not have an automatic bid. Carnegie Mellon went 10-0 to get an at-large bid and there’s nothing wrong with that.
msi2b: You send out Heidelberg and the WIAC will send out UW-Stout and we’ll see, ok? 🙂
SJF 484 OPPONENTS 166 (amazingly Springfield scored 76 of those pts)
Pat,
Please take into consideration that the OAC has two additional teams so lets talk about sending the eighth place teams against each other. ?
cmu is not the only team to get slaughtered by wesley this year. Wesley is my pick for the Stagg bowl.
SJFF82-
Couldn’t be prouder of the program. See you next week. Stay humble man it’s still a long road to Salem.
42
No, you don’t get a bye on your bottom two teams. To measure strength top to bottom you have to play your bottom.
Usually when we do such exercizes we remove the middle two from the OAC. That would be your top four against the WIAC top four and your bottom four against the WIAC bottom four.
Mount Union v. UW-Whitewater
Capital v. UW-La Crosse
Baldwin-Wallace v. UW-Stevens Point
Marietta/ONU/JCU v. UW-Oshkosh
Wilmington v. UW-Platteville
Otterbein v. UW-Eau Claire
Muskingum v. UW-River Falls (should be a quick game, total of 10 passes thrown)
Heidelberg v. UW-Stout
On a neutral field I’m not sure the OAC wins three of these, let alone a majority.
UMHB did defeat W&J today. The Presidents did have a good season and made the game a lot closer than everyone thought it would be (predictions on this site were 42-14. 42-14, and 40-17). Congrats to UMHB. However, they will have to play much better if they are going to defeat Wesley on the road.
I would love to see both #8 teams go out and play. My money would be on the WIAC every time. Am i biased, obviously, but i also know football. Their has never been a doubt in my mind that MUC is a dominant team not only in their conference, but in the country. Not too sure about the rest of the teams. I’m not giving Capital any credit yet. North Central was possibly the worst team remaining in the playoffs. Here in the midwest, Concordia/St. Norbert/North Central, even these teams with favorable records wouldnt fair well in the WIAC (.500 at best)……..If Capital has a good showing next week against Mount Union I will show them some more respect. Otherwise i will assume Mount Union is carrying that conference.
Anybody have the total yards for Beaver today? He had to be in the 200+ range. He tore through LAX in his first game back in 6 weeks. Scary sight for the rest of D3.
Congrats to Rowan from a huge Bart fan.
36 carries for 227 for Beaver.
Where did those cock-a-mainy rules come from Pat?
Well, the definition of top to bottom includes both top and bottom, doesn’t it? Doesn’t seem so cockamamy to me. You can’t both duck your bottom teams and claim best top to bottom league.
That’s why the WIAC has been the No. 1 conference in our rankings for a few years running.
I guess SJU put to rest any argument that Cortland State should have made the dance instead of them… Two playoff wins and heading to Whitewater to shock the the Warhawks!
UWWWRUNNER:
11-1 says nothing to you?? How about a near “W” last year at MUC where Cap was winning with about 4 minutes to go in the game, but loose 34-31?? I am not saying top to bottom anyone is better, but not give Cap the respect they so well deserve is a little absurd!! Am I biased?? Obviously, but I also know football, too!!
Pridefan:
Told ya so! 🙂 Great game and a great season for the Pride.
11-1 means nothing. Some poor teams went undefeated this year…. Captial lost by 26 to MUC THIS YEAR. Why should last year mean anything to me???
11-1 says a great deal to me, and I agree, they had a great game last year at MUC. I believe your comments should have been directed at UWWFootball. That being said, I agree that the WIAC is one of the toughest, if not the toughest conference in the country. Obviously I’m somewhat biased, and there are certainly some other tough conferences out there, but using the top to bottom argument, I have to say that the WIAC is right up there. Thanks Pat for the stats on Beaver.
