Live from around the country

If you live in the northeast and it hasn’t felt like football season, it should today. Temperatures in the East and Northeast regions (Ohio as well) today are expected to be in the high 50s and then later tonight dip down into the 40s. Good luck to the folks playing under the lights tonight. Just last weekend, the mercury was near 90 for the D3football.com/D3cast Showcase Game between Union and Springfield.

But, the weekend got underway last night with Wesley breaking away from Widener in an offensive showcase for the Wolverines. The seventh-ranked team in the country put up over 500 yards of offense and Larry Beavers scored a pair of touchdowns, including one on an 89-yard kickoff return to start the second half. But, this one could have been closer – Wesley fumbled the football four times.

Today, there’s a full slate of games around the nation with just about every team in action. The NESCAC starts their season next week but most teams are holding scrimmages this weekend.

Quick thoughts…
*Can Heidelberg make it two in a row with a win tonight over John Carroll?
*How many points will Mount Union score in the first quarter this week?
*Will Mike Flynt get into the game for Sul Ross?
*Can Montclair State contain Chris Sharpe and upset Springfield?

For all of today’s scores that aren’t mentioned here, you can check out our national scoreboard that’s filled with audio and live stats links.

And, don’t forget to check out more of Pat and Keith’s adventures in Oregon in the “Greetings from Oregon” blog. It’s probably warmer in Oregon than it is in upstate New York right now.

Amherst’s Rob Brown to play Ernie Davis on silver screen

There was a nice article on the front page of the sports section in the Syracuse Post Standard this morning that I figured everyone would enjoy.

Former Amherst football player Rob Brown is currently filming a movie about former Heisman Trophy winner Ernie Davis entitled “The Express.” Brown will star as Ernie Davis, the Syracuse University running back who was the first African-American to win the Heisman Trophy.

The movie is set to be released in the fall of 2009.

Brown made his big-screen debut in Finding Forrester (2000). He co-starred with Sean Connery. According to Brown’s IMDB.com profile, he went to the audition for the movie hoping to land a small part to pay off a cell phone bill. The former Lord Jeffs receiver has also starred in Coach Carter (2005), with Samuel L. Jackson, and Take the Lead (2006).

Below is the link to the story in the Post Standard.

Stagg Bowl XXXIV Live

Hello everyone and welcome to Salem Stadium. This is John McGraw for D3football.com and I’ll be blogging throughout today’s game between Mount Union and UW-Whitewater. Pat Coleman and Keith McMillan are broadcasting live on NCAASports.com and Pat Cummings is down on the sidelines. Gordon Mann and I will be handling the half time show and already hosted the opening part of the pre-game show.

Kick-off is officially scheduled for 4:13 PM EST. The stands are just about completely full on the home side of the field, full of purple and black clad Mount Union fans. UW-Whitewater will be the visitor and their fans take up about 2/3 of the bleachers on the other side of the field. Fans are still making their way into the stadium from the tailgate. There was a great turn-out at the Stone Station tailgate and we thank the Bridgewater folks for their great hospitality.

It’s a gorgeous afternoon for football. Temperatures right now are in the 60s and there’s not a cloud in the sky. You couldn’t pick out better weather for a football game in mid-December.

For Mount Union, Pierre Garcon was warming up without any type of protective cast on his hand. He looked good in warm-ups catching passes, so we’ll see how he does once the game begins.

Don’t forget, later on tonight, the D3football.com All-America team will be posted on D3football.com. We made the official announcement during the pre-game show. Congratulations to all of those selected.

More from Salem to come. We’ll have scoreboard updates on the front page of the web site.
