Live from around the country

If you live in the northeast and it hasn’t felt like football season, it should today. Temperatures in the East and Northeast regions (Ohio as well) today are expected to be in the high 50s and then later tonight dip down into the 40s. Good luck to the folks playing under the lights tonight. Just last weekend, the mercury was near 90 for the D3football.com/D3cast Showcase Game between Union and Springfield.

But, the weekend got underway last night with Wesley breaking away from Widener in an offensive showcase for the Wolverines. The seventh-ranked team in the country put up over 500 yards of offense and Larry Beavers scored a pair of touchdowns, including one on an 89-yard kickoff return to start the second half. But, this one could have been closer – Wesley fumbled the football four times.

Today, there’s a full slate of games around the nation with just about every team in action. The NESCAC starts their season next week but most teams are holding scrimmages this weekend.

Quick thoughts…
*Can Heidelberg make it two in a row with a win tonight over John Carroll?
*How many points will Mount Union score in the first quarter this week?
*Will Mike Flynt get into the game for Sul Ross?
*Can Montclair State contain Chris Sharpe and upset Springfield?

For all of today’s scores that aren’t mentioned here, you can check out our national scoreboard that’s filled with audio and live stats links.

And, don’t forget to check out more of Pat and Keith’s adventures in Oregon in the “Greetings from Oregon” blog. It’s probably warmer in Oregon than it is in upstate New York right now.

  1. Mychal Carillo hauls in a 19-yard touchdown pass from Justin Feaster as HSU ties the game at 26-26. HSU takes the lead with the extra point.

  2. The touchdown? Uhh, yes.

Battle on the ground for the ball, too. Legit catch in the end zone. 32-27 lead for Linfield as the two-point conversion fails.

It has been a great game, especially this third quarter. HSU might find itself wishing it had the second quarter back.

  3. I am really impressed with Jones’ ability to gain yards after contact. Another nice TD run and HSU leads 35-32 with 2:05 left in the third.

Great play by Feaster on the two-point conversion, keeping the play alive long enough for Travis Watson to release to the open side of the field.

  4. Linfield radio guys just said that Pat and KMack made the right choice for a game … which they did.

But when this one is in the books, check out the Concordia-Bethel results (live stats are on the scoreboard link.) It’s the Wild, Wild West today.

  5. Jordan Bousted wide open in the center of the field, cuts to the right and gets in ahead of the pilon on the final play of the third quarter. 39-35 Linfield to end three.

  6. Back to back sacks by Linfield of Justin Feaster. Punt returned by Josh Vierra 51 yards to the HSU 36. Punter Kelsey Larson with the tackle saves a touchdown, temporarily anyway.

  7. Scott Birkhofer buries a 46-yard field goal, so it’s 49-35 with 7:44 left. HSU not out of it yet but sure could use a defensive stop.

  8. Had to leave my office and go do my job for about an hour…like what I see now that I’m back! Sounds like the boys found the handle!

  9. North Central is making mincemeat of Benedictine. At halftime, it’s NCC 26-0.

Dominic Sulo’s having another monster game tonight.

  10. NCC’s now up on Benedicting 40-0. Benedictine’s offense hasn’t broken into Cardinal territory yet. Pretty dominating performance by the Cards’ defense.

  11. Quick question – Are St. Cloud State and Azusa Pacific currently ranked in their respective Top 25’s? For anybody who has any clue (I certainly don’t)……..would you compare a top NAIA team with a top D3, D2 or D1-AA team?

Keith, we’re getting ready to enjoy some “red skin” tomorrow night at the Linc!!

  12. St. Cloud State was not ranked in the most recent AFCA Division II poll or D2football.com Media poll. At a glance no Division III teams have played a ranked Division II team this year yet.

Azusa Pacific was not ranked in the most recent NAIA Top 25 poll. Southern Nazarene, currently ranked No. 23, beat Howard Payne (0-2) 42-14. UW-Eau Claire (3-0) beat No. 24 Black Hills State 13-10. We’ve had banter back and forth on our message boards between NAIA and Division III school supporters as to how the Associations stack up. I don’t know enough to weigh in.

  13. KMack has summed up the bantering pretty well on the NAIA vs. D3 post. In general, I think the numbers favor d3 vs., naia but there aren’t enough games between teams ranked at the top of each league to make any hard ruling. But Black Hills and St. Ambrose were both top 15 NAIA schools when they lost to non-ranked d3. Every year, d3 teams beat top 10 or top 15 NAIA but I haven’t seen many examples of the reverse.

Bottom line, though: it’s all small college ball and it’s all good.

I would have loved to see those great Carroll teams play Linfield or Mount Union …. or SJU in a meeting of Gagliardi’s two schools.
