Game Day: The quarterfinals

As of this hour, I don’t even know where I’ll be, whether that’s at North Central/UW-Whitewater or St. Thomas/Bethel. My original flight out of MSP to O’Hare has already been canceled and my next shot is 8 a.m. tomorrow.

But at least I should be assured of seeing something.

We’re throwing it open early Saturday, just in case I get stuck in an airport somewhere.

  1. As of 7am, 28 degrees and 2-3 inches of snow on the ground in Wheaton (7 miles north of Naperville). Still snowing slightly.

I’m guessing the folks at North Central have kept the field clear of snow since it is only a couple of inches. Will make it difficult for those travelling to the game however.

  2. Neil — every video broadcast that there is is linked in our Scoreboard.

Still in the airport in Minneapolis. The second flight is a half-hour late on the board right now but the plane did leave Chicago and is en route here and our runways are in good shape with no new stuff coming down right now.

  3. What a great game between Wesley and UMHB. Wesley’s defense just shut them down. Now one more hurdle before a trip to the Stagg Bowl.

  4. The NCC/UWW game was a great game. The teams were very evenly matched and it seemed to come down to turnovers. NCC had 3 costly turnovers in the second half that allowed whitewater 10 points playing with a short field. I have not looked at overall stats but would be surprised if they were not close.

  5. Let’s just be serious for a minute, Piperarcher. With teams like Huntington, Christopher Newport, and Newport News in their schedule, Wesley will be seeing a bit more than just a hurdle against UWW.

  6. No offense to the other 300 D3 programs but when the playoff were announced, we could just put MUC and UWW in the finals like a hotel reservation.
The NCAA has tried and failed to keep these 2 teams out and now we have to go through another week of this.
I hope I am wrong about MUC becuase they have been up there more than anyone else, heck Augustana wasn’t this big back in the day!

How can talk about Wesley’s schedule when our SOS was one of the best and UWW’s was very medicore. Wesley played three playoff teams during the regular season, D. Valley, CNU, and Salisbury, how many did UWW play. UWW plays in a weak conference and wins it almost every year. Wesley has to search out teams to play. I know we have never beaten UWW but that does not change my “one more hurdle” comment. UWW is a large hurdle and one we most get over. It was no small feat shuting down UMHB, some dap would have been nice. It seems UWW fans and UMHB fans spend a lot of time “bad mouthing” other teams. Sad way to look at life. I guess your blog handle says it all.

  8. piperarcher-

I don’t disagree that Wesley’s SOS was much better than UWW’s this year, but saying that “UWW plays in a weak conference” is a bit ignorant. The WIAC had a down year overall, but it has been consistently ranked by D3Football.com as one of the strongest conferences in all of D-III football. They have also been recognized by the NCAA in recent history by getting more than one team in the playoffs.

Wesley deserves their overall #1 seed. They played a great season against a strong schedule. UWW is paying for their weaker schedule this year by going on the road last week and this coming week. Just because the NCAA put a higher emphasis on SOS this year and seeded UWW lower does not mean that their team is any less dangerous or Wesley should be any less prepared.

Wesley is finally getting what they wanted back in ’05 or ’06 – a chance to play the Warhawks at home. I hope Wesley has a great week of preparation and they’re ready. Even though most players on this current Whitewater team weren’t on the squad the last time WW played Wesley, they will want to prove that the past was not a fluke.

As far as giving Wesley some ‘dap’ for beating UMHB, they deserve it. Beating UMHB is no easy task (just ask the rest of the ASC). Whitewater has done that before as well. Enjoy the victory, but don’t forget that beating one good team does not give you the championship.

I wish Wesley the best of luck next Saturday. I look forward to following the game from home.

  9. Wonder why UWW has a weak SOS let’s look at the teams that played a WIAC team. UMHB La Crosse 24-19. Ohio Northern River Falls 35-21. Trine River Falls 35-14. St. Thomas River Falls 27-3. River Falls and La Crosse were the bottom two teams in the conference. The WIAC commissioner would like teams to schedule UWW and Stevens Point. Not easy to do.

  10. pipearcher,
Name one team that could lose their starting quarterback the game before the playoffs start, and then string three in a row together?

As far as UHMD is concerned, the last time WW played them was in 2008 when they won 39-13.

Wesley is a good team, but there is no way based on history, WW’s current winning streak, and their being the defending national champions that they should be on the road twice during the playoffs. WW will have to beat three #1 seeds this year(two on the road, one in Salem), to win the nat’l championship again. MU and Wesley will have to beat one at Salem if they get that far.

If Blanchard is still hurt this week, Wesley has a chance, if Blanchard is back, no closer than 10 pts.

  11. Best of luck to WW next weekend, wwdad.

Wesley has had to deal with alot more diversity, losing it’s all American starting quarterback in the first game of the season and losing an all american tight end in the first game of the year.

This team has played hard to get where they are and hopefully will be going to the Stagg Bowl this year.

  12. I hooked up my computer to the big screen and watched Wesley vs UMHB game and I have to say it was a great game….. Wesley’s D is dominant. I really think it is going to be hard for any team to score more then 14 on them….. The game should have been closer to 35-9. I think there were a couple of missed PI calls that cost Wesley points

  13. Congrats to Wesley! Now go win the Stagg. I watched the game via internet which went pretty good. Im not going to make excuses for the CRU. Wesley won a hard faught game. Officiating was not that good for either team.

I’m pulling for Wesley to win. A few things Wesley needs to fix. UMHB could not throw the ball but ran it good. UWW can pass and run but Wesley’s secondary is better than UMHB’s. It should be a great game.

Will the Wesley-UWW game be available via video on the internet?

  14. Why does not UWW play D1 or D2 since they have over 8500 student enrollment? In fact the WIAC has the largest enrollment by far than any other D3 confrence.

  15. One of the reasons UWW has ranks 154 on SOS is that no one will play them. Don’t know why UMHB does not play them anymore. I remember the 7-0 game played in Belton a few years ago, man that was a hard hitting game. UMHB had Jerrell Freeman at LB who is starting for SASK in the CFL. I’ve heard things on both sides but don’t really know the real reason.

  16. footballfan,

“The game should have been closer to 35-9. I think there were a couple of missed PI calls that cost Wesley points”.

If UMHB got the holding calls and not fumbled the score may have been 23-19 UMHB. However, you guys were the better team that day and won. Now go win the Stagg! I hope you guys go all the way.

  17. Give Bethel some credit… they won on the road 3 straight.. I know Mount Union has allowed 17 points at home in 7 games but you know bethel will bring their game.. They have not allowed over 20 this season and I guarentee Mount Union will be in for a surprise 🙂 BU BU BU BU BU’

  18. Logan Flannery for ever baby!!!! New MIAC rushing champion, great career and we will miss you.. just beat Mount Union and I will smile till the day I die

  19. WIAC schools have high enrollment because they offer a good education for a reasonable cost. As far as playing D1 schools you do not need to have a large enrollment to become a D1 school. A good example is St. Thomas who was in the process of becoming a D1 program and decided against it. There are private colleges that are small but very financially well off. Follow the money.

  20. Someone can correct me if I’m wrong, but WW has played D2 schools and quality NAIA teams recently. However, as far as SOS goes, neither D1, D2, or NAIA counts towards SOS. If I’m right, WW could play the best D1 program in the country and it would mean nothing towards SOS.

  21. exactly…I love the enrollment argument…what is the argument for UMU success? all 1000 of the males that go there play football? If people want to talk about enrollment maybe you should ask yourselves why you can’t compete with a school the size of UMU and not the size of WW…did you know that WW has higher enrollments or close to those of Notre Dame, Vanderbilt and TCU? Maybe the Warhawks should be playing the Badgers for the Rose Bowl because they are also undefeated, right?

  22. Well said Deucedubs. If a school can recruit, then enrollment has little to do with success w Mt Union as the perfect example- end of enrollment discussion.

The SOS arguement against UWW is so lame. The WIAC was down as a conference this year, but replace some of the teams they lost to with weaker opponents and all of a sudden UWW becomes a power SOS. For the record, teams from the WIAC played:
    Mt. Union
    North Central
    St. Thomas
    St. Johns
    UMHB
    Wheaton
    Central
    Willamette
    Ohio Northern
    Trine

SOS is seriously flawed. And by the way, one game after beating Wesley last year with a reciever at QB, Mt. Union was beaten by UWW. Sure, that was last year. But do you really think UWW would say no to a non-con game with any DIII team? SOS is a joke of an arguement against UWW.
