First regional rankings released

The NCAA released its first 2010 regional rankings today.

Teams are listed with their regional record first, followed by their overall record. For more information about the playoff format and how participants are determined, check out our FAQ.

We will pass along any needed corrections in regional records to the NCAA. Traditionally the football committee has been pretty much on, however.

  1. Last year we started the regional ranking process without UW-Whitewater in the No. 1 spot in the West Region. This ranking might be the first I remember that doesn’t have Mount Union No. 1 in the North when they are unbeaten.

Mount Union rarely has the best strength of schedule among the unbeaten teams in the North Region but is always No. 1. And the Purple Raiders always live up to that.

    Your comments?

  2. Wow, neither MUC or UWW as a 1.

Talked to the committee chair today, not about this specifically, but something she said about “things working themselves out.” cones to mind.

UWW’s SoS will rise vs SP & Osh, but I wonder if the CCIW winner cab hold on over MUC.

  3. Interesting statement on the “strength” of schedule for Wittenberg by having them below three one-loss teams.

Interesting, too, having Ohio Northern ahead of so many unbeaten teams. Doesn’t that fly in the face of last year?

  4. Unless they’ve changed the criteria, the Wesley/DelVal game is in region. They screwed this up last year too I believe.

At the same time, Wesley’s SOS should jump after the Salisbury game. UMHB’s SOS may drop with games against Howard Payne (2-6) and Texas Lutheran (3-4.) Hampden-Sydney’s SOS is a mixed bag with Guilford (0-7), but the W & L (5-2) and RMC (7-1.)

  5. Wondering if the fact that MUC is “only” 6-0 in region had a role to play in being #3 behind 7-0 Wheaton and NCC.

The UW-OshK is over the 500 mile range from Alliance so it technically was “out of region”…

  6. The 500-mile limit is for busing a team.

The 200-mile radius rule is used as one of four criteria for determining region.

    1)Evaluation Regions (4)
2)Adminstrative Regions (4) and different from Evaluation Regions
    3) 200 mile radius rule as determined by the official NCAA site
    4) Conference games (I believe that this is new to 2010-11.)

  7. Ok…. I am fairly new to D3 football so please take it easy on me…..but why is Del Valley a higher seed then Wesley even though Wesley beat them? Is the BCS involved in this….but seriously can someone help me understand this. Thanks

  8. Footballfan — in this case it’s fairly simple. It’s because they’re in different regions. If Wesley were in the East it would likely be ahead of Delaware Valley.

  9. Thanks Pat….it still is very confusing that they are ranked lower then two teams in their region……even though they are ranked higher in the national rankings. Same with UW-Whitewater and Mount Union…..not sure I understand why….

  10. I don’t understand why St. Thomas doesn’t get more love? I realize UW Whitewater is the #1 team in the nation, but St. Thomas deserves to stay at number 1 in the region and even higher if they remain unbeaten. They have had the toughest schedule amongst all of the nationally ranked teams. They have beaten both St. Johns and Bethel. St. Thomas is even so good that Bethel moved up a spot after losing to them. I think that if UW Whitewater moves up to number 1 in the region after beating oshkosh and stevens point, that would be ridiculous.

  11. It wouldn’t be playoff season if I didn’t open mouth and insert foot. That said, 200 miles seems awfully tight a radius IMO.

Thanks for the reminder re Frostburg / Alfred though…

  12. UWW will pass UST in SOS as the teams left for UWW are a combined 10-11 and UST plays two more teams with a combine record of 6-8.

  13. St. Thomas is the team to beat and deserves to be ahead of UWW. I have seen this team play several times this season and they are the most balanced team out of UWW, UWSP and others. As a former NFL scout, I have seen great players come and go, but I can always spot a team having a magical season. Go Tommies!

  14. The WIAC commissioner has tried to get Minnesota football teams to schedule games with UWW and UWSP. There dosen’t seem to be any takers. Starting next year teams will have to play each other twice. This will make for a boring schedule.

  15. Congrats goes out to Western New England for breaking the Top 10 in the East regional. It looks like the foudation is complete and the program is on its way to bigger and better things. The house must be built on a foundation to last. Over the years below…big accomplishment to this years TEAM.
