Game Day: Welcome from sunny SoCal

At least I assume it will be sunny, since it was after midnight Pacific Time by the time I left the airport. Looking forward to a great day, watching four halves of football and six teams, five of which I’ve never seen, in three stadiums I’ve never been to.

Meanwhile, Keith is going to be knocking some teams and stadiums off his list, too, so perhaps it will be a good time for us to meet up and compare notes again in the future. Sure, my goal is still to somehow, someday see all 245 teams play, or however many teams it is by then. Still got a ways to go.

I’ll leave the intro short, since I haven’t been to sleep yet and games are starting soon. Would like to be awake again by the time Mount Union and Ohio Northern take the field.

As always, comment on what you see!

  1. Picturesque is the best way to describe the weather here in Doylestown, Pennsylvania where Delaware Valley hosts No. 5 Wesley in a match up of 2-0 teams. The temperature is 75 degrees with a bright, blue cloudless sky.

Cloudless is a pretty good way to describe Wesley’s performance to date. The Wolverines have given up 3 total points against Christopher Newport and Division II Greenville (SC). The offense is balanced and dangerous with 200 yards per game throwing and passing. From a playoff perspective, the game looms large for Wesley who doesn’t have many regional Division III opponents.

Wesley quarterback Shane McSweeney returns to the place where he took over the Wolverines offense last season. That game ended with a dramatic one-yard touchdown plunge by Del Val full back Butch Whiteside. People around the Del Val program remember a close game in Dover in 2007, too, with Wesley rallying to win in the second half.

Del Val needs a big game from senior quarterback Mike Isgro who keyed the Aggies win last year with a fourth and goal touchdown scramble early in the second half. The team’s tackle leader, ILB Chris James, will not start due to an illness but will play. Can Del Val’s young linebacking corp continue their impressive play against the run where they’ve allowed just 83 ypg?

Here’s hoping for another close one today.

  2. Hobart scores on a 51 yard flea flicker TD (Vella to Vincent). 7-0 Statesmen with about 6 mins to play in the first quarter.

  3. CMU ties it up with a Pratt TD, but gives the lead up an 85 yard Andy Marlier kick-off return TD.

    Bart 14- CMU 7.

  4. You could be right Gordon. Hobart D holds on 3rd and long. CMU 28 yard FG is good. 14-10 with 11:24 to play in the first half.

  5. Centre is surprising DePauw (at DPU) early – up 14-0 as the first quarter comes to an end. Matt Mazzanti kicked off the scoring with a 75-yd interception return, and Johnathan Pinque scored from one yard out after Tyler Ostermann had found Nick Edwards for a 37-yd completion. The DPU O is totally out of sync so far with Spud Dick struggling (6-of-11 but for only 35 yards).

  6. Seaman is in at QB on the third offensive series for MUC. Still 3-0 ONU halfway through the first quarter in Ada.

  7. ONU intercepted at the MUC 9. Sloppy both ways and MUC already has 4 penalties and another that was offset. Hopefully they stop turning the ball over both ways so I don’t keep monopolizing this feed.

  8. Make that 27-3. About the only thing not going right for Centre is their kicking game, with two missed PATs (one blocked) and two missed field goals (one of which was wiped out thanks to a personal foul penalty on DePauw). 0:48 before the half.

  9. Vella interception leads to CMU scoring drive (Pratt rush TD) with 11:21 in the 4th qtr but PAT is no good. 17-16 Hobart.

  10. Wesley dominates the last 8 minutes of the first half and takes advantage of two short fields. Wesley 17-0 at the half.

  11. Two scoring drives by MUC in the second quarter. First a TD from wildcat formation for Shorts. Second a 28 yard FG. 10-3 MUC with just under nine minutes left in the first half.

  12. Monmouth already up 14-0 with 7 min left in the 1Q vs Beloit. I think the Bucs were Pat’s “least likely to improve to 3-0” team this week.

  13. Trinity up 10-0 early at Rhodes after two fumbles in Rhodes territory.

Austin up 14-0 on Millsaps after turning away the Majors with a goal line interception and a surprisingly easy 80-yard drive.

  14. 2nd fake punt gets hobart another first down and hobart milks the clock to wrap it up. 24-16 Final in Geneva.

  15. Austin regains the lead with a nice 9-play, 78 yard drive. 21-14 over Millsaps with 4:49 left in the half.

Trinity is now playing their third-string QB, Patrick Dickinson. 13-7 over Rhodes.

  16. Two plays after an underthrown pass bounces out of the hands of a defender into the receiver, Rhodes scores on a short run to close to within 27-13 (PAT no good). 0:32 left in third quarter.

  17. As Piper Archer mentions, Wesley defeats Del Val 31-13. The Aggies gained 341 yards to Wesley’s 338 but had five turnovers including two inside Wesley’s 30 to start the game. The Wolverines lost Aaron Jackson to an ankle injury in the first half so we’ll have to keep an eye on his status. Good game for McSweeney, good game for Wesley who rolls on to 3-0.

  18. DePauw drives to the Centre 3, but Brian Sneed picks off Engle in the end zone to save the Colonels from what had the possibility to be a crushing collapse. Centre 34, DePauw 24, FINAL.

  19. Centre holds onto a 34-3 fourth quarter lead by intercepting a DPU Michael Engle pass in the end zone to win 34-24.
