Showdown Saturday Live Blog

It’s that time again. With the entire gang on the road this weekend across the country, I’ll start off the weekly Saturday blog.

I’m here in a hotel room in Albany, N.Y., and the weather is absolutely miserable outside. There’s a large front of showers across the northeast, it’ll be interesting to see how it impacts all of the games today.

Check in with your thoughts here.

The offensive fireworks are already underway at Benedum Field in Springfield. Ithaca and Springfield are tied 7-7 about midway through the first quarter and the Pride is driving again. Chris Sharpe has a chance to become Springfield’s all-time career rushing yards leader.

  1. 6-0 Alfred late in the first. Lousy weather is not helping matters much, according to the Hobart PBP guy…

  2. Bad start for St. Thomas, as Hogan slips returning the opening kickoff and downs himself at his own 3.

  3. Beautiful day here at St. John’s. This is my fifth or sixth trip here and it’s the first time it’s been above freezing at game time. We’re about a week late for the leaves, but a great atmosphere all around.

  4. Bad start even worse. St. Thomas fumbles at the 5, St. John’s scores a TD three plays later.

We might REALLY need those updates from around the nation today.

Great, great atmosphere here though. Will post more later.

  5. Mount and Cap are scoreless after the first quarter. That’s gotta be the first scoreless first for Mount right?

  6. In Chicago at the half: CWRU 28 Chicago 3 Four Whalen TD passes and Chicago picked off three times and at least twice as many “almost interecpted!”

  7. St. Thomas mounting a length-of-the-field drive, despite some key drops.

Scoreboard-watching the day’s big games, Trinity has struck first at Millsaps (7-0), N.C. Wesleyan is up 21-10 on Christopher Newport in the second, Mount Union and Capital were tied at 0 late in the first last I looked, and W&J up 7-0 on Waynesburg.

St. Thomas TD … they acquitted themselves very well on this drive. 16 plays, 90 yards, 6:13.

Good. We want to see a tight game whenever possible.

  8. STU DB had good coverage and fell, one play, 62-yard TD “drive” in 0:10. 6:10 in the 1st. 14-7.

As far as MUC, I think I looked recently, Mount Union had only given up 3 points in the first half all season. But I don’t believe they had been shutout before, no. I think they were doing the most damage in the 2nd though, so we’ll see.

Good to hear it’s a good game so far.

  9. WW 14 MHB 0

    Beaver 23 yard run

INt on next MHB possession, with Danny Jones 9 yard run.

    1st quarter.

  10. Short punt (may have been tipped) leads to a short TD (3-36-1:07) drive by the Johnnies. 21-7, 3:11 in the 1st.

Kickoff went to the 2 though 🙂

Live stats have Whitewater up 14-0. Wow.

  11. FYI, Mount had been 171-0 in first quarters and 137-3 in the second.

Whitewater put together a 9-play, 68-yard drive, then picked off a Welch pass and went 9 yards in 2 plays.

Mount Union is up 23-0 apparently, although parts of the GameCast are showing 0-0.

  12. Yeah, wow, just saw that. That’s bad. UMHB can still do what they do and come back, but you never want to spot a team 21.

Looks like MUC/Capital is in the 3rd, with the same 23-0 score, all in the second period.

  13. Waynesburg leading W&J 14-7 at the half.

Hobart leading Alfred 17-13 at the half.

Dickinson leading Muhlenberg 17-16 at the half.

All of those are mild surprises.

TCNJ 10-0 over Cortland too, at the half.

    Whitewater/UMHB the stunner so far.

Time to head to field level or a few minutes here at SJU.

  14. First post; long-time reader. MHB is killing themselves with penalties today. UWW’s last touchdown drive was helped out by 2 key penalties. The first gave the warhawks a first down while they were punting on 4th down. UWW’s defense really came to play today and have stepped up big! Yes, Danny Jones is having a terrific game, but my player of the first half is definitely AJ Raebel.

    28-0 UWW at the half.

  15. 31-16 Hobart

48-21 final Ithaca over Springfield. Brian Hogan 3 TD catches as well as a 2pt conv.

31-0 Saint John Fisher over Utica in the 4th

17-0 TCNJ over Cortland with 2:35 to go

  16. Sounds like the 3 turnovers are hurting UMHB too, along with the penalties. They are very interested in that game here at SJU.

Lots of interesting results brewing. The Wash U. loss clears up Pool B. Wesley leading Salisbury further clouds it, but neither of those things are too surprising.

Hobart ahead of Alfred and Waynesburg up on W&J could knock a couple of teams out of the top 15, and Capital will probably fall since they were unconvincing at Mount Union.

TCNJ looking pretty convincing, still shutting out Cortland. Defense lives!

  17. Wesley hangs on against Salisbury to win 20-13.

Salisbury got the ball with 45 seconds remaining but their last gasp was intercepted in the end zone.

  18. Jet lag? Nah.

Colorado College quarterback Jon McDonald was 36-of-50 and threw for 398 yards and four touchdowns as the Tigers defeated Birmingham Southern 38-28.

The Tigers compiled 568 yards on 99 plays from scrimmage.

On the opposite side, Birmingham Southern ran just 58 plays and gained 315 yards. Joe Thigpen was 25-of-35 for 242 yards and two scores.

  19. CNU was trailing 35-17 with 12:53 left, but has closed the gap to 35-32 according to updates Pat is receiving on his handheld device. Also, we’re told Matt Kelchner was taken to the hospital after feeling lightheaded, so we’ll have to confirm the details on that as we hear them.

31-0 now at Whitewater. Thinking maybe UMHB was going to Mount at comeback at some point, but we’re waiting … and waiting … and waiting.

If none comes, I wonder how the voters will treat a blowout.

Certainly also, South Region teams going to Whitewater will be a hot topic on the boards.

Here, St. Thomas is keeping it interesting at 28-14, but passed up a field goal opportunity efore the half to try for a new set of downs and presumably a TD, but was stuffed on fourth down. That’s about as dramatic as it’s been.

  20. Shutout averted at UW-Whitewater: Quincy Daniels 1 yd run (Joel Munoz kick) 11 plays, 71 yards, TOP 4:04

    W&J took a 22-21 lead on Waynesburg.

    Fun!

  21. Whitewater returns the favor and has 2 costly personal foul penalties that helps MHB sustain a scoring drive.

    UWW 31 – MHB 7

4 min remaining in the 3RD Quarter

  22. I’m seeing 41-14 at Whitewater. Let the Warhawk gloating begin!

St. Thomas closed to 35-28 with 13:09 left to make it interesting, then looked like a team that will probably move up to No. 3 in the polls with a 13-play, 69-yard drive in 5:01 aided by a key scramble on 4th?-and-3 by Alex Kofoed. St. Thomas recently snapped the ball over the punter’s head to go down 44-28.

W&J hung on to beat Waynesburg 22-21. Muhlenberg outlasted Dickinson 29-24. Millsaps leads Trinity 24-16 in the 4th.

I know you can all see this on the scoreboard page, but sometimes it’s interesting to have it all in front of you.

    WPI 14, RPI 7 with 1:4o left … that’s a major upset alert too.

  23. Keith,

I’ll be the first (possibly the only) UWW fan that will admit that the score in this game doesn’t really show how close this game was about to get in the second half. UWW’s 2 INT’s for TDs have play a huge role in the game; not to mention the 3 or 4 other turnovers by MHB. Granted, a great game for the warhawks, but there is still room for UWW to improve.

  24. Just to recap in a different way.

    No. 1 MUC won big
    No. 2 UMHB LOSING big
    No. 3 UWW winning big
    No. 4 St. John’s winning
    No. 5 Wheaton winning
    No. 6 Central winning big
    No. 7 SJF won big
    No. 8 W&J won squeaker
    No. 9 Salisbury LOST
    No. 10 Wesley won
    No. 11 Alfred LOST

More upsets brewing in the rest of the top 25 … we have a big shakeup coming.

St. Thomas 45-yard TD pass to the RB Casey to make it 44-34 with PAT (2pc?) pending … They did not convert, otherwise that’s a one-score game with 5:14 left.

  25. From afar, even I wondered what kind of game it would have been without the two UMHB INTs early.

Still, UWW never let them get back into the game once staked to a lead, so that has to say something.

Should be the consensus 2 this week.

  26. Way to go Mount – Capital is a very good team….to hold them scoreless speaks to how good this year’s defense really is….im sure if we see them again this year in the playoffs they will bring it like they always do though …Hard to believe UMHB didnt have a better day today….warhawks won a big one…i have to say, im already anxious for playoff football….

  27. With 2 seconds to go, from their own 39 yard line, Trinity trailed Millsaps by 2. With the SCAC on the line, Trinity began to lateral the ball in an attempt to get the ball down field, pitching the ball all the way back and forth and down the field between receivers and even the quarterback. Finally, the Tigers through the ball back across the field to #7, Trinity receiver Riley Curry who took it in for a miracle touchdown. I would like to nominate this play for the top play of the day on ESPN sportscenter. Trinity 28 – Millsaps 24.

  28. dcfbguy1, I recall you calling it and I disagreed. Well done! I have to say I like when a fan believes in his/her team and they come through. Also this boasts well for the LL. I believe this is the LL first impressive win out of conference this season. RPI gets lucky again today and brings down WPI in 2OT. Union comes out on top of a must win over St. Lawrence in a pool of slop. Rochester defeats Susquahanna today as well. The next two weeks are going to be as good as it gets in the LL. Again, nice call dcfbguy. Go Union!

  29. A lot of football between now and then, but UWW/MUC, part III, is looking quite possible in the Stagg.

  30. Thanks, it’s going to be a great one in Schenectady… I agree with you, RPI’s luck is going to run out soon, I think in the Battle for the Dutchman’s Shoes… Hobart/Union is going to be a dandy… Hope you can make it

  31. UMHB lost to UWW has to be a big dissappointment to fans and the UMHB team however this will be a test for UMHB. How will they react to the lost? Will they regroup and win out the rest of their games? The healing and the character of the team began on the field after the game. They can be proud and rebound as they did in 2004 after a heart breaking loss to Hardin Simmons.

  32. MHB should be able to rebound from this loss. Without the turnovers this would have been an extremely close game. UWW got 14 points of of 2 INT returns for TDs. And if I’m not mistaken scored 17 points off of 3 other MHB turnovers. MHB’s defense played well after a bad 1st quarter. They held UWW to under 300 yards of total offense (although, the returned INTs had something to do with that). The loss does bring up some interesting potential playoff seedings though. I would love to see this rematch somewhere down the road this season. None-the-less it was a great overall victory for UWW. They took advantage of MHBs mistakes and made them pay.

  33. The game-ending Trinity-Millsaps play was videoed by the Trinity broadcast team (unable to put it on the web due to problems with the Millsaps server) but the local ESPN guy is trying to get it on the air. Historymajor will make sure it gets on the web if they don’t.

  34. Oh I will be there sitting tree line. I have no idea what to expect but I do know one thing; if Union does not play their best game of the season they will not have a chance. I feel Hobart on the other hand is more balanced. I don’t know? All I know is besides being a Union fan I will also be a huge Rochester fan next week.
