Immediate reaction to 2006 bracket

Alright, well, I’ve had the bracket in my hands for almost five hours so I’ve probably come to grips with it, but you guys haven’t had it nearly as long so it’s time to let out those pent-up frustrations.

I would really like to get to the bottom of the Millsaps mileage issue. The folks on the committee told me that the number they got was higher than 500 miles, so I’d like to know what it takes to standardize these distances. There’s a Web site the NCAA mandates schools to use to determine whether a game is in-region and that is indeed the site I used. Why they got different numbers, neither of us is sure.

In the end, it just means we have a regional semifinal one week early.

Looking forward to the potential matchup of Rowan and Wilkes in the second round. That should be a great game. Rowan is just getting its offense in gear and I’m not sure that Hobart, which struggled with William Paterson and others, can keep up. Wilkes is strong on defense as well. I haven’t seen the field since September, so I wonder what it looks like now.

Springfield, as I mentioned on the air, is in shape to play two games on turf, which bodes well for their offense. They need a lower seed to advance out of the other half of the bracket so they can continue to host on turf. They would get that if Rowan were to beat Wilkes, but I also doubt the Springfield/St. John Fisher potential rematch in round two would replicate round one. Springfield will still be favored but that doesn’t mean the game will be the same.

Can anyone aside from Capital hang with Mount Union in the top bracket? Can Capital even do it?

Kind of a neat story to get two long-time playoff drought teams together in round one in Pittsburgh. Contrast in styles, too.

West, two storied programs meet in the first round in Pella, while Bethel tries again to get the first-round monkey off its back.

Floor open for your thoughts.

  1. Mississippi College lost their starting QB in the Millsaps game. Millsaps had an incredible change in fortunes between weeks #1 and #2, i.e., not being destroyed by another ASC team, Louisiana College in LC’s first game, losing 38-41. LaCollege then beat Miss College by 3 points in game #5, week #6.

Millsaps is good. I think they edge CMU.

Dude! LOL! +1 karma. UW-Lacrosse for the BCS, if they can beat UW-W in a rematch!

  2. SeanGOP – In a previous post, you mentioned the words “landslide” and “election”. If the last three letters of your name have anything to do with your political affiliation…….you’re correct, it was a landslide……but it slid the other way. The Dems stomped and obliterated Little Georgie’s party.

Good luck to all of the teams and good luck in trying to knock off Mount Ohio State Union…….it’s not happening!!

Let’s all get back to work and make a lot of money so we can contribute to those less fortunate (our fellow human beings…….not 3rd tier DIII football programs!!). My hedge fund clients are waiting!!

  3. Dukefinadv,

Let’s keep politics out of. You couldn’t so much as hold a candle to me anyway. If you had read earlier posts, I was responding to someone elses comments directed to me.

The last three letters of your name are adv. Does that mean your last name is an adverb?

    Talk football – not politics.

  4. SeanGOP – I made a comment based on your comment that you would beat Raiderguy in a landslide…….not this year if he is a Dem!! And not on the field against his team!! Also, be bold and pick your team (although your team is not in it and my undergrad school….Swarthmore….actually dropped the program years ago!!). We can’t go the field vs. Mount Union!!

And by the way…..adv is for advisor…..the type who charges 2.5% of assets plus 22.5% of the upside. Do you even know what that means in a market like this? My adopted school will be very happy with me this year. I just have to decide if I want to attach my name to the facility or go the humble route!!

I will keep it to football SeanGOP………my financial candle has never burned so bright. I’ll bet you that I give away (having absolutely nothing to do with tax writeoffs) more this year than you will make!!

Go Mount Ohio State Union and go Straddles & Spreads (simple options strategies that I’m sure you deploy across your non-real estate portfolio!!).

  5. dukefinadv-
From your previous posts- we all know you are extremely smart and make a ton of money(so you say) — but who cares?

Here’s to hoping someone knocks off Mt Union– and before they reach Stagg Bowl.

  6. pumkinhead – I was just sticking up for Raiderguy when SeanGOP (were you awake for Tues. Nov. 7?) said that he would beat him in an election by a landslide. His team is not even in it!!!!! I actually want to see Mount Union knocked off…..but at the same time I’m sort of pulling for them because of all of the jealousy (including me from time to time) on this board.

I am typically reactive in my posts……not proactive!! And the money angle only came up when someone challenged the prowess of my school on the field (they dropped the program!!). Not having a school to brag about at this time of the year has not hurt me from a professional standpoint….that’s the point!! I came from nothing and I’ve made something and I give a lot back. Isn’t that the spirit that we were all taught in our personal, educational and professional upbringing?

pumkinhead…..you/we can’t take the field vs. Mount. Who do you hope and who do you think will knock them out?

  7. Dukefinadv,

I think the adv does not stand for advisor – it stands for adverb. The one that comes to mind is annoyingly. And to answer your question in advance – it is a word Swarthmore grad. Look it up in your $10,000 dictionary.

I know my team did not make it, but a fan of D3 football can find other teams to root for, and I will do just that.

I’m sure the Mount Union is proud to have someone such as you rooting them on. You should make a donation to their athletics department.

By the way, with such an important job as yours, how can you afford to stray from the needs of your clients to write lengthy posts? Shouldn’t you be paying attention to the markets?

Now, lets all move on and discuss football and enjoy the final few weeks of the season – including you dukefinadv.

  8. SeanGOP – When you’re involved with foreign markets (including futures and currencies), the most interesting happenings occur well before the U.S. markets open up. Also, when you are not involved with heavy day trading, the minute by minute minutia of the market is rather inconsequential. That’s why I pay top dollar to my statistical programmers. It’s become a lot less of a gut feel game over the years.

But you’re right….let’s all move on to football. I’m not rooting Mount Union on near as much as most of you are rooting against them!!

I want to concentrate on Milton Friedman’s passing and just how significant it will turn out to be from a historical perspective. It appears to me that he throws better from the right!!

  9. “Where did everyone go?”

After reading some of duke’s posts I felt the need to go rebalance my portfolio and donate a wing to the UWL library, a solid gold wing. I’m not bragging or anything, but I won my third grade spelling bee and my 1993 Ford Tempo is fully paid for.

    Go Eagles!

  10. Love that New York Thruway look out for the deer countted about 10 splattered on my last trip up the Rochester way.Don’t feel like making a trip to NJ to see the Barttie’s going to check out some girl’s D1 high school powder puff instead I hear they play for keeps.GO PROFS

  11. Mr D if Union get’s by SJF, I’ll be a next years Hobart Umion game in my union suit(it’s red) Don’t know if I just dated my self or dose anyone know what a union suit is?

  12. Duke,

My last dig – I promise. You probably lose more money for your clients than I make all year!

Now a compliment. I believe you are smart and I compliment your choice of schools.

    Now, lets talk football.

  13. repete,

late to the game here but you should know the cciw has had WIAC games on its calendar every year for the last 6. Also have had games against the MIAC, IIAC, and OAC. many of the IBC games are tradition for those schools (wheaton v hope, carthage v carroll, elmhurst v IBC). The CCIW isn’t dodging anyone with its scheduling. Wheaton has been to the playoffs now 5 of the last 7 years and each year it has ended vs MUC. It just so happens we get to play MUC before anyone else does. That doesn’t make us any stronger/weaker by itself. I do think the CCIW is slightly down this year but this Wheaton team is probably one of the better teams we have sent to the playoffs in the recent run. That doesn’t mean the season won’t end the way the others have, but I think it will be more interesting.

Scheduling is a difficult thing to weigh. there are many factors involved and CCIW teams have a lot of choices (unlike the Linfields and some of the WIAC teams) because of their geographic proximity. I agree the CCIW could do a better job scheduling tougher opponents and the trend has definately gone that way. (2 OAC, 2 WIAC and 2 IIAC this year). But as long as the CCIW season ends in alliance I don’t think you can say they are better or worse than anyone else whose season ends against the purple raiders.

  14. USee,

I am a CCIW man, and there is no need to say that we can do a better job of scheduling. We have tough non-conference schedules – every year, and I mean every year.

Nice to see you praising the CCIW – thanks man!

  15. SeanGOP

Geeze….I guess I need to put LOL when I am just bustin’ your chops a little. Four??? You are right. Just 54 & 55 stick in my head. Oh and 18 and 8.

    Honestly….

Which would you rather talk about, those four then or even one now?
They invented something called the forward pass since “then”.

What have you done for me lately? 7-3? Beat down from BW (OAC 3rd place) and a real strong Plattville squad (WIAC 4th place). We will miss you in the “weak” northern bracket.

Oh this just in …….Raider Nate Kimic just put another 100 yards on your defense. That record is in the Raiders press guide too.

You know better than to say I don’t cheer for other teams in D3.

I’ll be in Pella Saturday. What game are you attending?

SJU. Coe. W&J. ONU. Linfield. WStout. Just to name a few. All great programs. Fun to support and great fans. Now I must be running for election. LOL!

Final four MUC, UWW, Wilkes, MHB.

    Dukefinadv…Thanks.

  16. Comment No. 268:

“A penny pinched is still just a penny.

For the cost of one extra flight, the NCAA decided to pair up top 10 teams in the first round, not once, but twice. That’s just plain wrong.

I know the folks in Indianapolis are tired of hearing the term, but the shoe fits.

Perhaps it happens so often that I’ve become anesthetized to it, but the more I reflect on this bracket, the more upsetting it is. What’s the point of adding teams to the bracket if we’re still going to be stuck eliminating Top 10 teams so early?”

Quoted from earlier this week, right?

Nope. From the Daily Dose this time last year.

  17. CF

“What Laz does, and my system does, is iterate through every score of every game. The overall strength of a team is the result of all games, and takes into account the potential that a close win or a close loss may have been an upset.”

I’m good with this, and the rest of that post.

If the William Paterson/Rowan is one example of H2H’s unreliability, how do you explain the computer ranking Hardin-Simmons ahead of UMHB even though UMHB won by 12?

Dare I say I trust educated people the most?

  18. Raiderguy…..you’re welcome!!!

SeanGOP…..I love ya’ man. I’m a bit of a whack job but it’s the stress of the job. I didn’t mean any disrespect.

Let’s have an awesome weekend of football!!!!

    Are we boyz?!

    Duke

  19. SeanGOP,

who do you mean ‘we”? I see the likes of greenville, benedictine, eureka, and chicago every year on some teams non conference schedules. that’s not tough scheduling. Augie does the best job of non conf scheduling, usually with UW schools, central Iowa, wartburg, etc. we can do better

  20. Augie adding Platteville this year proved a tougher test they they anticipated. But Wheaton’s NC schedule was fairly lame … congrats on the win. But with Mount St. Joe, Corcordia. Wis., and Hope the bottom of the MUC bracket is fairly lame …
