Seeding teams 1-32

Alright, let’s try something different. Take the 32 teams selected using the NCAA’s criteria, but seed them nationally. What would we get?

This is a seeding of the 32 teams using the NCAA’s seeding criteria. It’s a little rough, obviously, because there are some seeming inconsistencies in the NCAA’s regional rankings, ones which we’ve had to take into account here since they would use the same criteria.

1 Linfield
2 UW-Whitewater
3 St. John’s
4 Wabash
5 Delaware Valley
6 Trinity (Texas)
7 Occidental
8 Union
9 Mount Union
10 Ithaca
11 Thiel
12 Ferrum
13 Mary Hardin-Baylor
14 Rowan
15 Augustana
16 Wesley
17 North Central
18 Concordia-Moorhead
19 Coe
20 Bridgewater (Va.)
21 Monmouth
22 Hardin-Simmons
23 Hobart
24 RPI
25 St. John Fisher
26 Mt. St. Joseph
27 Central
28 Willamette
29 Adrian/Albion
30 Johns Hopkins
31 Curry/Fitchburg State
32 Lakeland

So that leaves this for brackets:

Linfield Bracket
No. 32 Lakeland at No. 1 Linfield
No. 17 North Central at No. 16 Wesley

No. 24 RPI at No. 9 Mount Union
No. 25 St. John Fisher at No. 8 Union

Wabash Bracket
No. 28 Willamette at No. 5 Delaware Valley
No. 21 Monmouth at No. 12 Ferrum

No. 20 Bridgewater (Va.) at No. 13 Mary Hardin-Baylor
No. 29 Adrian/Albion at No. 4 Wabash

St. John’s Bracket
No. 30 Johns Hopkins at No. 3 St. John’s
No. 19 Coe at No. 14 Rowan

No. 22 Hardin-Simmons at No. 11 Thiel
No. 27 Central at No. 6 Trinity (Texas)

UW-Whitewater Bracket
No. 26 Mt. St. Joseph at No. 7 Occidental
No. 23 Hobart at No. 10 Ithaca

No. 18 Concordia-Moorhead at No. 15 Augustana
No. 31 Curry/Fitchburg State at No. 2 UW-Whitewater

Now, believe it or not, this only requires 12 flights. Hobart and Ithaca is a drive, RPI and Mount Union is a drive (seriously, 496.6 miles), Adrian/Albion can drive to Wabash, St. John Fisher and Union can drive. So if someone can pick up the tab for the extra 10 flights, we can get this done. Who’s with me? 🙂

  1. Wouldn’t this be fun! Be a good chance for a lot of teams to show how good they really are against some different competition.

I’ll chip in 10,000 frequent flyer miles. 🙂

  2. Ah, the “most fair” bracket.

I think I’ll just tuck this away for Sunday.

I mean, honestly, does anyone think Bridgewater and Ferrum aren’t going to be matched up within 13 seconds of the committee taking their seats? And then they’ll say “oh look, Empire 8 #2 at LL #1, and vice versa. (unless Cortland messes it up).

  3. A question about the play-offs and the system. I believe if Wabash does get the #1 seed in the north bracket they should have 3 home play-off games (round of 32, 16, and 8) and possibly another one assuming a number one seed falls in another region and they keep winning. So why do I keep hearing Wabash will only get two home play-off games WHEN they beat Depauw on saturday. I read the FAQ about the play-offs and this was my understanding of them so where did I go wrong?

  4. Perhaps it’s a matter of how you’re hearing it.

They could be saying it this way: “Wabash will only get two home playoff games if they beat DePauw on Saturday. Otherwise they’ll get one or zero.”

  5. I don’t like the talk of Wabash getting any more than one home playoff game at a time. Win at Depauw and Wabash gets to be home for the first round. There is no second round or second home game unless Wabash wins the first game. Win the first game and they’ll be home for the second round. Win that and they’ll be home for the regional finals. After that it depends on how the seedings go and what shakes down in the other brackets (particularly the bracket that the Wabash region gets paired up with).

But let’s get through round 1 before worrying about where round 2 will be played.

  6. I agree.

Back to the topic at hand, I would love to see D-3 go to this. There would be some great and interesting matchups abounding. I think this would cause a real national interest.

Can you imagine UM-HB traveling to Hollett for a potential second round game? That would be incredible.

  7. P Cole has dne a lot of work here… HOWEVER, i’s preposterous to think Union, RPI, and Hobart will all get in and meanwhile, you are leaving out WASHINGTON AND JEFFERSON. The Presidents were in the Final Eight last year and they have had a banner year this year, blowing out nine teams and losing just one — in OT, 38-35. Matter of fact, all season long they have been in the top 16 in the whole division, all of a sudden you are relegating them to 33rd or worse… ?

Just hope you will do a fast “reconsider.”

  8. Nope. They are not one of the four Pool B teams in terms of criteria as of this moment. Like all of our other projections, they are if the season ended today.

When Willamette … err, if Willamette loses on Saturday to Linfield, then W&J would be next in line. But not today.

  9. Remember, this is a pie-in-the-sky concept. The NCAA won’t pay for it, just wanted to give people a look at what it could look like.

And I don’t think you should disrespect Wabash and Mary Hardin-Baylor that way. Did you watch the Stagg Bowl last year, by chance?

  10. Pat is it conceivable that Wesley could be put in the East And get a home game? I know how the committee likes to move things around for travel. Boy would I love to drive down the street and watch a game bewteen Wesley and Del Val. I know that’s not looking like a good match right now but stranger things have happened.
Also, which game didn’t count other the obvious three, Seton Hill?

  11. Seton Hill is not a Division III member, so yes, that didn’t count.

I would be surprised if Wesley got both East and a home game. They have to go behind Del Val and Union who are potentially unbeaten, then behind St. John Fisher and Ithaca, who each beat Brockport State.

  12. No chance Wesley would be home against Del Val in any circumstance, and Union in almost every circumstance.

  13. Actually Del Val is right down the road from me!!! Would be a short trip to see a good game. Unless Wesley gets a south home game I don’t think there are any short trips. Except Rowan.

  14. I would like to see Monmouth vs. Ferrum – NOT. Two quality teams with no respect playing one another? I think they should play proven ranked teams to give them a chance to prove themselves above what they have.

    Monmouth would beat Ferrum.

  15. Monmouth certainly will beat Ferrum…if indeed that is who they play! Never underestimate the power of the #1 rated quarterback in Division III! Monmouth has put great teams on the field for the past 4-5 years, but have always dwelt in the shadows of St. Norbert…they are prepared to take it to the next level!

    Bring on Linfield!

  16. A Reply to North444. W&J’s owns wins over opponents with a combined record of 23-60. Quality of wins? Thiel is currently #3, W&J is tied for 58th! Of course W&J is rolling over everyone, given that stat. Its a testament to “tenure” in the AFCA & D3 rankings that they are ranked ahead of Thiel. If W&J misses the playoffs, they have no one to blame but their admin for such a weak strength of schedule and themselves for not taking care of business and beating Thiel at their home field. The days of “automatic” Class B invites by winning the PAC by “default” are over. Lose the PAC & 9-1 may not be enough based on who they beat….we’ll see.
