Game day from Alliance, Belton

This is Scott Miles live in Alliance, Ohio for today’s Ohio Athletic Conference matchup between No. 1 Mount Union and No. 4 Capital.

Both teams are 7-0 on the season and 6-0 in the OAC.

The last two times these teams met, Mount Union defeated Capital 34-31 in the NCAA National Quarterfinals. The Crusaders took a 31-27 lead with eight minutes left, but the Purple Raiders rallied with a touchdown of their own with less than four minutes on the clock.

Look for several talented playmakers on both sides to play a major factor in today’s game. The Purple Raiders are led offensively by running back Nate Kmic (126.9 ypg), receiver Pierre Garcon (101.3 ypg) and quarterback Mike Jorris (1st nationally in pass efficency). Offense is first nationally in scoring and defense ranks second in points allowed.

Capital counters with quarterback Rocky Pentello, the all-time OAC passing yards leader, and the OAC’s top receiver, Derick Alexander (110.7 ypg). The offense is fourth nationally in scoring, and a well-balanced defense ranks fifth in points allowed.

We’re an hour away from kickoff and it is cold, windy and raining here in Alliance. Weather conditions will definitely be playing a factor today.

Game day from Whitewater, Danbury, etc.

Hey folks, Pat Coleman from the press box in Danbury, Conn., where Cortland State leads Western Connecticut 28-14 at the half. I came here with the hopes of finding out exactly how good Cortland is, because I think we might have them a touch underrated at 16 in our poll.

Big news here on Cortland’s second drive of the game, as Red Dragons quarterback Alex Smith took what appeared to be a relatively minor hit which became a serious injury. Clutching his left knee as he went to the turf, Smith was eventually carried off the field and was being fitted for crutches on the far sideline. No official word but it doesn’t look good.

Good news for Cortland is that backup Ray Miles has looked decent in his stead, completing seven of 10 passes for 82 yards and a score.

A tripleheader weekend

Keith McMillan and I often plan these things out — in fact, last year he spent some space in his column talking about doubleheaders you could create with a little bit of drive time.

Now, I’ll be honest, I miss my family (they’re in D.C. getting the house ready to sell while I’m in Connecticut working at my new job). So as long as I’m not home, I might as well keep myself busy, and this weekend I’m planning to do it by seeing three Division III football games.

Unfortunately, because of geography, I’ll only see two ranked teams, and both of them are in the same game, but it should be fun anyway. I am based in Norwalk, Conn., now and I have Friday off, so I’ll drive up to Worcester, Mass., to see Worcester State host Nichols. Take the drive west and spend the night somewhere along the way so I can see No. 12 Delaware Valley at No. 19 Wilkes, kickoff at 1 p.m. Then I’ll take the relatively short trip to Reading to see Susquehanna at Albright, 7 p.m.

I might regret this when all is said and done, because I’ll be pretty exhausted, but should be an experience.

Then I just have to get home and get some sleep so I can be ready for the Sunday Night Football shift at work.
