I’m in Eau Claire,Wis., where there’s no wireless (or at least not consistent enough to get on) and we are all standing around waiting for the national anthem. Or for UWW to come out of the locker room, not sure.
One of many big games today, especially in the afternoon, but before we get to your updates kudos to UMHB, which struck a blow for D-III pride by beating Southern Nazarene last night, a ranked NAIA team. It was UMHB’s first game and SNC’s third.
On with the games!
UWW strikes first on a Jeff Schebler field goal with just over six minutes left in the first. Lavell Coppage had a couple nice runs to start the drive, bunch of short passes but Jeff Donovan missed Jordan Wells wide open in the end zone before the Warhawks settled for three.
Wesley’s offense looks sharp on the first drive, capped by a Mike Pennewell two yard touchdown run. Del Val muffs the punt snap on the ensuing drive and Wesley picks up a field goal (42 yards) by Colin Blugis.
Wes 10 DVC 0 – Start of Q2
Another Schebler FG, WW 6-0
Another field goal for UWW makes it 6-0 as the rain picks up. Couple of dropped passes by Aaron Rusch in the end zone forced the Warhawks to settle for three. Now 6:30 in the second.
Maryville just put up 7 against Centre. Teams in general are playing well. You can tell its Week 2. Some bad tips by receivers on both teams have lead to several TOs as the 1st Qtr ends.
Whitewater and Eau Claire are at the half – Warhawks lead 6-0, though, a near hail mary pass almost connects for Eau Claire on the last play of the half.
Shenandoah leads Bridgewater 7-0 at the half. Also, a pair of TD passes to preseason All-American tight end Brent Weverbergh has helped Ithaca to a 17-7 lead on King’s in the second quarter.
Marcus Nelson, who transferred to Wesley from Iowa, blocks two field goal attempts in the second quarter to preserve a 16-0 Wesley lead over Delaware Valley.
6-0 here at the half. Nils Dillon was unable to hold onto a Hail Mary pass for the Blugolds at the end of the first half. Rain has let up a little bit after it was coming down pretty heavily for the final eight minutes of the second quarter.
King’s and FDU-Florham, who were a combined 2-18 last year, are both off to good starts in 2008.
FDU-Florham leads Alfred 14-0 on the road in a bid to go 2-0. King’s is hanging with Top 25 Ithaca in a 7-7 tie in the second quarter.
Levell Coppage cementing his place in the starting lineup, with 16 carries for 91 yards in the first half. Jeff Donovan 10-for-16 passing for 70 yards. For Eau Claire, Cory Sartorelli has 77 yards on 15 carries, while Kyle Paulson is 7-for-17 passing for 61 yards, but just 2-for-9 in the second quarter.
Big slipup by Marvylle. Was 3rd down at about Centre’s 18 yard line. QB got chased all the way back to the 43…. Punt.
Headed back down to the field, nathanshin, all yours on this game. 🙂
Halftime. Maryville 7, Centre 0.
The Scots’ RB Nick Moore has had some nice runs, filling the gap, since Hightower got injured. Centre doesn’t have anyone dominating, but they’re playing as a unit pretty well.
Eau Claire INT on the Warhawks 2nd play to open the second half and Eau Claire is at the Warhawk 5. Four plays later Cory Sartorelli rushes for 1 yard and a TD. XP good and Eau Clair takes 7-6 lead.
Another Warhawk TO (fumble) puts Eau Claire in Whitewater territory, but UWEC turns it back after a compteted pass inside the WW 15. 7 minutes in 3rd.
WW at EC 2…Freshman Levell Coppage carries it in and WW takes the lead 12-7. XP good. WW 13-7. 95 yard drive following the EC fumble.
La Crosse trails D1 North Dakota 14-7 in the first.
Del Val forces two turnovers and turns them into 10 points.
Wes 16
Del Val 10 – 2:25 3rd
Maryville QB pulls a move on the defender and reaches the end zone. 14-0.
All-American kicker Jeff Schebler knocks in a 47 yard FG extending Whitewater’s lead to 16-7.
Freshman RB Levell Coppage with 36 carries, 190+ yards, 1 TD.
Schebler’s offense did him no favors, going for minus-20 on its final series and making the field goal a lot more challenging. Hit it with just a couple yards to spare.
Huge punt return by Centre…..maybe 50+ yards, down to the 9 yard line.
Del Val gets a gift on a fourth and 14 when Wes commits a personal foul (running into punter).
Del Val converts a fourth and four as Brandon Fox has doinks off guys and in for a score. The extra point is good and Del Val leads 17-16.
Del Val 17 – 10:43 4th
Wes 16
UW-Eau Claire gets second life there. After UW-Whitewater had too many men on the field on a punt on fourth-and-6, the Blugolds convert on fourth-and-1, hit a couple big passes to Spencer Kehoe, including a 12-yard touchdown. 16-14 UWW with 4:20 left.
Goal line stand by Maryville. 3rd and 1, Centre gets nothing, but they get in on 4th down. 14-7 MC is up.
74 yard drive, finishing with a TD pass, for EC to close to 16-14 with 4:28 left.
A too many men on the field penalty on WW on a 4th down punt kept EC driving.
Maryville fumbles. Centre has the ball 24 yards from the endzone.
TD Centre.
WW INT with 2 1/2 left. Whitewater looking to run the clock out.
Coppage now with over 200 yards…watch out for this kid!!
Yeah, Coppage is pretty good. 🙂
Too much firepower on the ground for Wes who marches right back to score. New QB in the game (Shane McSweeny) throws a TD to Jon Lanouette. Two point conversion is no good after Wesley commits two penalties and burns a time out trying to get it off.
Wes 22 – 4:35 4th
Del Val 17
Final from Eau Claire, UW-Whitewater 16 Eau Claire 14.
45 FG by Maryville, with room to spare on the kick. 17-14 Scots
45-yard, that is
Centre hits a FG to tie it as 17
Del Val goes 75 yards and on fourth and goal from the 1…
Just squeaks in. Touchdown Butch Whiteside.Two-point conversion good.
Del Val 25 – 15.9 4th
Wesley 22
Maryville takes the lead with a FG. 0:02 left on the clock.
Aggies kick the ball to Larry Beavers (WHY?!!) but hold him to a short return (phew). Wesley throws the ball to Blair Newman who steps out of bounds after the clock shows zeroes (what?).
Del Val 25 – Final
Wesley 22
Ugly!!!!!
Gordon wasn’t that Isgro on a sneak?
That last drive was positive yrds. every play.
A lot of players cramped up today.
Probably a combination of soft turf and hot, humid day. Plus Wesley D was on the field for most of the third quarter.
I had that one exactly backwards in Triple Take.
“I wouldn’t be surprised to see a very competitive first half before Wesley makes it a two-score game in the third quarter.”
Plus North Central over ONU and Wheaton over Bethel … and Wabash 41-27 over Denison!?!?
(gets ready to blow up poll with this week’s vote)
Ooh, time to plug in the headphones:
Hardin-Simmons 29
Linfield 22
4th – 00:36
So was there a lot of rain in the midwest? Low scores seemed to indicate that.
I looked at the rain map on Weather.com this morning and it seemed to cut from Texas to Indiana to New England.
How you know you’re not one of them:
They say: What the heck has gone wrong at UCLA, Rutgers and Syracuse?
You say: What the heck has gone wrong at Bridgewater, Randolph-Macon and Mississippi College?
d3football.com giveth, d3football.com taketh away…
I was surprised to see Wabash advance from 11th to 9th last week without taking one snap, particularly since they leaped over a team which won 41-0. So I won’t be surprised to see the LG’s retreat a bit. The season is still young.
Great game to watch today between Franklin College and Butler. Too bad the link on the home page doesn’t take anyone to the article on the game…it links to the Shenandoah game commentary
I thikn that surprised most of us, but it’s also been discussed on the top 25 thread ad naseaum. I came up with lots of possible explanations.
And yes, the season is young, which always been lots change as these teams start to paint the picture of what kind teams they will be for the first few weeks.
And I guess this answers my weather question a bit:
VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) — Warren Arnold threw for 170 yards and a touchdown pass Saturday in Valparaiso’s 34-10 win over Concordia of Wisconsin in the Crusaders’ damp home opener.
Ross Wiemer carried just nine times, but for 94 yards and two touchdowns as Valparaiso (1-1) rolled up 449 yards of total offense in a game played in a steady rains.
Here in Minneapolis for game two, the Augsburg/Wartburg game.
I’ll be on the halftime show at WABY sometime around 8:20 ET and after that on Augsburg’s halftime show.
Augsburg has jumped out to a 10-0 lead, running out of the spread — 18 passes and five runs on the first two drives for the Auggies. Jordan Berg 13-for-17 passing for 95 yards.
Spencer Herzberg just kicked his 23rd career field goal, a career record for Wartburg. 10-3 Augsburg 14:15 2nd.
Augsburg just turned the ball over as Jordan Berg lost the ball on a play everyone up here, from both sides, myself included, believes should have been an incomplete pass.
