Cue the Black-eyed Peas

Let’s get it started, indeed.

A lot intriguing games including a rare match-up of Top 10 teams in Alliance where No. 1 Mount Union hosts No. 10 St. John Fisher. How will No. 21 Franklin fare with its Top 25 ranking and a tough Baldwin-Wallace team? Does East Texas Baptist have what it takes to surprise No. 6 St. John’s? Who will score more – Albright’s passing attack or No. 12 Salisbury’s running attack? Does UW-Lax or Hardin-Simmons bounce back from a disappointing 2007? How will Tropical Storm Hanna impact the East coast games?

We’ll soon find out.

  1. I’ll be at St. John’s in the afternoon and UW-La Crosse tonight. Fans listening and following games elsewhere should definitely chime in with what’s going on at their games or games they are seeing online.

  2. Gordon,

It looks like Hanna wll impact the games up north more so than down here in Va. It was very windy and the rain was intense. But it was fast!!!! The storm is practically on top of us right now. In fact the “eye” could very well be overhead since my backyard is extremely calm. This thing will be out of here by 1:15pm. Good luck to the teams north of here!

  3. I’m at Ferrum for their game against Emory & Henry right now looking forward to kickoff. Mostly cloudy skies. It feels like the rain is past us. It hasn’t rained for about two hours now, and though it’s a little muggy, it’s a great day for football.

  4. Disappointing that the Wesley/CNU was cancelled. TSounds like they could have waited it out. I know East Carolina and and WVU didn’t cancel but I guess that’s a later start. It’s a shame for all the seniors on both teams that will have one less game to play. Meanwhile, It’s raining pretty hard and windy here in Dover, but playable too. My six-year daughter played soccer late this morning.

  5. Delaware Valley trails Iona 14-0 in the first. Aggies just fumbled away the ball and had it returned 38 yards foe a touchdown. Gaels also scored on their opening drive, though Del Val has moved the ball and has 91-89 advantage in total yards.

  6. Conrad,

They couldn’t have waited it out. CNU evacuated campus. That was the reason the game was cancelled. Newport News Apprentice did the same thing when the shipyard CLOSED! Anyone familiar with the yard knows they don’t shut down on a whim. The navy sent all their aircraft away, as did the Air Force. As it turned out, all the evacuations and closing weren’t necessary. But you can’t predict it at the time a decision has to be made. This was the best scenario – precautions taken but not needed. The opposite is Katrina and New Orleans.

I’m sure if the coaches had any input, they might have delayed the game until about 3pm. But they weren’t invited to the meeting. Overall I think the CNU administration did a good job getting about 3,000 students evacuated in less than 24 hours – including out of town Freshmen without cars.

  7. St. John’s 7-0 after 1. 122 yards of total offense in the first quarter and just seven points on a wide receiver pass. ETBU is moving the ball a little bit here, given new life on a roughing-the-punter penalty that got them to midfield. SJU missed a long field goal wide left and is 1-for-3 on third down, 0-for-1 on fourth down.

  8. 13-7 E&H is up. 2nd half is just about to start.

Both teams were pretty sloppy in the beginning, and they’re definitely trying some new things/players and seeing what works.

E&H just returned 2nd-half kickoff to the Ferrum 43.

  9. ETBU 29-yard field goal by Kyle Pape cuts the St. John’s lead to 7-3. Ended up being a 13 play, 66-yard drive that took 6:53.

  10. Conrad,

No shot taken. I was just throwing out some details. Yeah, I feel bad for the players and for the fans like me who are sitting at home instead of having fun at a game I’ve been looking forward to for months!!

  11. Ferrum is making this a good game. They score to pull within 5. It’s 26-21 with 1:53 left in the game.

E&H defense isn’t eroding as much as Ferrum’s offense is picking things up.

  12. Alright, well, I thought we might be leaving this game a little early to head down to Winona and see the Hardin-Simmons/UW-La Crosse game … but East Texas Baptist just got a 49-yard catch-and-run touchdown from big tight end Nick Peoples and the Tigers lead 15-14. So we’re here for a while longer.

  13. St. John’s has answered with a 12-play, 77-yard drive behind Michael Crees, the third quarterback into the game for the Johnnies. It’s shades, slightly, of 2004, when Alex Kofoed was the fourth quarterback into the game for St. John’s in the opener against UW-Eau Claire. He nearly led the Johnnies all the way back for the win.

  14. Start the countdown on Vogelbach too, I guess!

Got into the stadium here in Winona just in time for kickoff.

  15. Hardin-Simmons has all sorts of trouble getting a play off on fourth-and-a-foot from the 2-yard line, ends up attempting a field goal, which is blocked by UW-La Crosse’s Matt Winney.

  16. Hardin-Simmons misses a 36-yard field goal after an interception. A holding penalty pushed the Cowboys back to the 19.

  17. Eric Donoval ripped off a 48-yard touchdown run out of a short yardage package on third-and-2 and UW-La Crosse leads Hardin-Simmons 7-0 early in the second quarter.

  18. Eric Donoval now has a career-high 136 yards rushing for UW-La Crosse, the entire scoring drive that put the Eagles up 14-0 after a short Hardin-Simmons punt.

  19. It is quickly turning into the Eric Donoval show here. Third touchdown of the day after he also started the drive with a 23-yard punt return.

  20. And after a Michael Tracy interception off a tipped ball, short drive ends in a Mychal Carrillo touchdown catch. All tied up at 21-21.

  21. Saw Hiram at Gallaudet today, in the driving rain, and I don’t regret it one bit. Hiram broke their 26-game losing streak and the joy alone would’ve been worth the trip … but it was a pretty exciting game too. Three safeties, and scores of 7-2, 8-7, 9-8, 14-9, 14-11 and 14-14 before it went to OT, in which Hiram stopped Gallaudet, got backed up to its 31, and then drove for a game-winning score … I guess I’ll explain it better later, but it was solid stuff.

Didn’t see much in the way of surprises on the early scoreboard, except maybe my alma mater. 🙁

  22. The Cowboys deliver their first big stop of Donoval all night on fourth-and-goal from the 2. Under 4 minutes left in regulation and it’s still 21-21.

  23. Stevens with a carry to the 10, under 45 seconds left. Remember HSU has missed two FGs already tonight, and at this end of the field. UW-La Crosse takes another timeout with 39.5 seconds left. HSU has one timeout remaining.
