Opening weekend, who’s with me?

I keep going back and forth as to whether I can manage it but I’m tempted to try this Week 1 tripleheader, taking advantage of my new Minneapolis home base.

Friday night, it would be NAIA quarterfinalist St. Xavier at defending Division III champion UW-Whitewater, a 7 p.m. CT start. Then Saturday morning (yes, morning), East Texas Baptist is at St. John’s, 11 a.m. CT kickoff and Saturday night, Hardin-Simmons vs. UW-La Crosse (at Winona State in Minnesota, shaving some travel time) at 7 p.m. CT.

Doable? Sure. Sane? Not without a second driver. So we’ll see.

Of course, with a lot of drive time (or money) you could make it a quadrupleheader and pick up Thursday night games between Springfield and Fitchburg State or Mass Maritime and SUNY-Maritime. East Coasters could take the former, add Nichols at Westfield State or Curry at Worcester State on Friday night, Rowan at Bridgewater State at noon on Saturday and one of a handful of games that night, say, WPI at Mass-Dartmouth and never leave the state of Massachusetts.

If I were still working at NBCSports.com and living in Connecticut, I guess that would be my itinerary.

  1. You start off well by visiting the WIAC and seeing a D3 playoff team facing off against an NAIA playoff team. Then come back to the MIAC and all that a St. Johns home game has to offer. But instead of going back and seeing another WIAC game, I think you need to head south to another border state of Minnesota and check out the 7pm start and the opening of a new stadium at the University of Dubuque against Rockford!!! That way you end up seeing games from the WIAC, MIAC and IIAC.

  2. Winona for UW-La Crosse it is then!!!

Plus, you could get home to the family faster from Winona as well!!!

  3. The UWW — St X games sounds good I can make that one — only about 3 hours from home.

UW Stevens Point is playing Azuza this year too, any idea how many NAIA/D3 games are on the schedule this year?

  4. While I will not be darting all over the place attending games, I will be hosting a tailgate party that will feature fans from all over (well- all over the mid-atlantic)…CNU, Wesley, Wabash/Ferrum, Widener. If anyone will be in the NN area that first weekend, drop me a line and stop by. Let me know if anyone needs tickets.

  5. I’m going to need to redraw the map here — the SJU/ETBU game has been pushed back to 1 p.m. 🙁
