Small college sites get noticed

I recently participated in an e-mail interview with Chris Preston, who writes for ESPN.com, about our sites and the state of small-college sports information on the Web. His piece was recently published and I wanted to point it out as a good discussion of where the sites have been and where they are heading.

Though the column inexplicably starts with the younger site — D2Football.com, the various D3sports.com sites are discussed in some detail. 🙂

Just one note: I didn’t promise weekly columns in other sports, just suggested that they could be possible. Anyone interested, let me know.

  1. Although playing second fiddle to D2Football is a little annoying, it’s nice to see D3Sports get some long overdue recognition.

  2. I just got done reading that article and there were some very good points like the fact that any sport that is not DI is seen as sub tier division and that these sub divisions were taylor made for the internet which has no basis, just straight information.

Both D2 and D3 websites do a great job helping the schools get exposure, The only critique would be of the D3 site seems very cluttered. Anyone else feel like that?

  3. Admittedly, yes. We have a lot of content and we struggle to present it all in a clean and concise manner.

But we have a lot of content. I’d have a hard time relegating any of it.

  4. It wasn’t always that way. We didn’t always have a blog, or Google ads, or releases on the front, but those things have their place.

It still seems plenty navigable to me, with basically everything you need on the left-hand rail. A couple of the links might trip me up if I were new, but it seems self-explanatory.

    Is it not?

I realize clutter and navigability aren’t necessarily related, and a site can be both.

But as a “friend” of D2football.com, and surfer of the I-AA and NAIA sites, I do prefer the D3 setup in many ways. Not to single any of those sites out, but having used them frequently for research, I find that in many cases things I need are hard to find.

That said, they all do things really well too. Not a slam by any means. One thing we all share is a strong enthusiasm for the level of football we cover.

  5. Oh I am not complaining at all I was just saying that it is just a little cluttered. I have a couple of suggestions if you wanted to hear them. ( design websites and a little Online marketing on the side) Beyond that though I totally agree the more the information the better. Drop me a line at footballandcoaching@gmail.com if you want to talk. Thanks
