The grass is gone

Was recently in Salem for the Division III men’s basketball Final Four. (Actually, I’m still here. This is my third attempt to get out. Thankfully, free wireless at Roanoke’s airport.)

The improvements continue in Salem, and we’re on track to have artificial turf in Salem Stadium for Stagg Bowl XXXV. This comes on the heels of other recent improvements such as increased lighting, refurbished locker rooms, an elevator to enhance seating opportunities for those in wheelchairs, etc.

We’ll have a more formal front page story in a day or two, when we get our photographer back. 🙂

  1. Kudos to Salem for the quick turnaround on the stadium improvements! Now all they need to do is install a permanent shelter in the parkinglot row B for Stone Station to serve out of and for D3football.com to broadcast from. LOL!

    On a side note Pat. I was impressed while watching the CSTV coverage of the Nat’l Championship Bball game that your work and awards are noticed. They were talking about an Amherst player and were mentioning his accolades. They finished with “and he is a first team D3Hoops All-American, and that means something.” Way to continue to be “The Source of D3 Sports”. See you guys in the fall.

  3. Is Salem doing this to help sustain the Stagg Bowl’s presence in VA or just because, and are they’re still those out there that are lobbying for its location to be more “centralized”. Salem had a wonderful facility before the additions and I hope that the Stagg Bowl lives out its years there!

  4. Raider, I think that progressive forward-thinking leadership that meets the needs of the NCAA will fend off most challengers.

    There are very few places in the country that can mount a sustained effort that we have seen in Salem to keep the Stagg Bowl going the way that this has.

    As we have discussed, moving farther north and northwest brings the weather question into play.

    Moving south puts it farther away from a fan base that is inclined to drive rather than fly.

    I think that Salem is trying to put distance between itself and the field of the contenders in the “Sports Events and Convention Travel Industry”.

  5. Has the decison been made on where the Stagg Bowl will be for the next couple of years. I know at least Coppell, Texas put in a bid for the game.
