D-III finalists at So. Oregon

Thanks to a Linfield fan for bringing this to our attention. Redlands head coach Mike Maynard and Rockford offensive coordinator Steve Helminiak are finalists at NAIA Southern Oregon, according to the Ashland Daily Tidings.

SOU’s athletic director is cited in the story, including this gem about Helminiak: “I think he’s potentially a great head coach. His attitude is a winning-type of attitude and he’s done very well at Rockwell (sic) College.”

Not sure whether he spoke incorrectly or was misquoted.

The decision will reportedly come within the next two weeks. Big blow for Redlands if they lose Maynard.

  1. PC, that’s par for the course at SOU. They lose games on silly “attention to detail” type stuff. Looks like it starts from the top! 🙂

This looks like it will come down to how much money they want to spend. I would imagine Maynard would come at a bit higher price.

…uh oh……looks like Maynard is also a finalist for the DII job at Western State College of Colorado.

    Maynard had this quote:

“In no way, shape or form am I unhappy here at Redlands,” Maynard said. “I still think I have one of the best jobs on the planet. If they were to offer me the job, everything about the job would have to knock my socks off to leave because I consider this my home. But I thought it would be good to test the waters.”

…to me that sounds just like coach speak for “I want to leave but if neither of these jobs don’t pan out then I guess Redlands will work.” If Maynard is really that happy at Redlands then why he looking are these other jobs?

  3. I saw that too, re Western State, but looking at who he was up against I wasn’t too confident he would get that job.

  4. Well, I visited Maynard at Redlands in 2004, and he seemed really upbeat about the program and the facilities, and you really couldn’t ask for a better campus environment and what not. That place is certifiably beautiful.

Perhaps something changed between now and then, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s something like what happens to all of us in our jobs from time to time … wondering if there’s something better out there for us from time to time, and regardless of whether we opt for change or not, we at least appease our curiosity by trying.
