Concordia-Selma does exist

Millsaps couldn’t provide any documentation to verify its claim that Concordia-Selma (or as they list it, Concordia (AL)) had a varsity football program. Well, according to this article from the Selma Times-Journal which a reader sent, they don’t currently, but plan to in 2005. They claim to have ended spring practice with 64 players.

Good thing it’s a home game for Millsaps — with the way Concordia-Selma gets scores out from its other sports, I doubt Millsaps would get accurate stats from this game.

  1. “Tenatively, Concordia will face the University of West Alabama, Allen University, Millsaps College, Texas College, the University of South Alabama, Edward-Waters, Atlantic College-Charlotte and Grambling State.”

I am glad to see that Millsaps is the 3rd opponent. My concern is that the injuries and attrition may take a toll on the Yellow Jackets roster.

Will Concordia compete as a member of the NAIA or under some other banner?

  2. That’s a freaked-out schedule. All over the place. I’m surprised they haven’t tried to match up with Huntingdon.

  3. I’m not surprised. I couldn’t even find athletics on their web site. It may not have been updated for a l-o-n-g time.

  4. “Concordia will play as an independent team this fall, with aspirations of joining the National Association for Intercollegiate Athletics.”

Wow. That web site IS ancient. Lists 96-97/97-98 educational costs.

    According to Peterson’s,
this school has an enrollment under 500, nearly 80% of which are female. That might answer the “why would they start football” question.

  5. If that’s true, and they only had about 100 men, then adding football would significantly change the campus population.

  6. Yep, Pat … Peterson’s says there are only 68 full-time undergraduate men on campus (+30 part-time). A 4:1 women:men ratio might also make recruiting all that much easier, too 🙂

  7. Huntingdon don’t want to play because they think Concordia’s team will be loaded. Yes they do have an first year program established and they have more recruits coming in for the fall. I personally want to see them play. I’ve noticed that they have 9 games and 2 open dates on Oct 2 and Oct 22 and I’m pretty sure Concordia would love to play them in Montgomery on one of those dates. If anybody have any connections with Coach Turk please tell him to call Concordia and schedule a game between them.

  8. I think it’s HIGHLY unlikely Huntingdon is ducking anyone. They’ve played some of the best teams in Division III in order to fill their schedule over the first years f the program’s existence.

  9. Another thing is that they didn’t win 1 game in year 1. Year 2 they won 5 games. That’s a good improvement, but Concordia will win at least 5 their first year.

  10. We’ll see about winning five games. You have two club teams on the schedule in South Alabama and Atlantic College. Definitely won’t win five games that count.

  11. This is how we will win 5 games. WE will SHOCK WEST ALABAMA, defeat ALLEN & MILLSAPS, SOUTH ALABAMA & ATLANTIC-COLLEGE are CUPCAKES. Then we WEBBER, EDWARD WATERS & TEXAS COLLEGE. We will win 2 out of those 3 games. That all irrelavant because we don’t play HUNTINGDON that will be a rival game because we know majority of their players.

  12. Well, what’s this “institutional aid” then – and why have a ‘signing day’ or whatever they had.

  13. “Concordia doesn’t offer athletic scholarships like most colleges, but they do offer Institutional Aide to their new recruits. The aide basically serves as a scholarship.”

    Gotta love it!!!!!

  14. I’m not on here to explain what goes on at the school. I’m just trying to find out about competing against other schools. They have their accreditation just like all other schools in the south.

  15. The (apparently subtle) point I was attempting to make is that by offering scholarships (oops, I mean Institutional Aide) to athletes, you are going to (a) more effectively be able to recruit athletes and (b) defeating non-scholarship D3 schools is essentially what you should be doing. In other words, the playing field’s not level. Not surprising given the school’s decision to seek NAIA rather than NCAA D-3 affiliation.

  16. Ok, the point you’re trying to make is that if we have Institutional Aide, why are we playing D3 schools who have no scholarships(with the exception of Mount Union, St. Johns & a host of other schools).

  17. A.D.

Could you explain what you are saying in that last post? Are you implying that MUC, SJU and others are providing “scholarships”?

  18. I don’t think this guy has any idea what Division III is all about. He’s just trying to rabble-rouse about Concordia-Selma. If he doesn’t know the difference between Division III and schools which can offer athletically based aid, then let’s not humor him with any more responses.

  19. Some D3 schools do provide scholarships. Not all of them but some do. Pat I didn’t mean to push any buttons but all I said it would be nice if Concordia played Huntingdon since they are 40 miles apart. SORRY!!!!!!

  20. They do not offer athletic scholarships, AD. That’s illegal. Come back with proof rather than baseless allegations.

I don’t see you clamoring to play Stillman — they’ve pretty darn close by too.

  21. Ok they don’t have scholarships & I wouldn’t mine playing Stillman anytime, anyplace, or anywhere. Please it’s just a discussion don’t bite my head off! Just want to play competitive D3 schools. I’m SORRY!!!!!!!!!!!

  22. Let’s hope that this historically-black institution, part of the LCMS Concordia University System, is not about to take the low road to athletic success.

  23. I’m curious to know why Concordia/Selma desires to go from having no team to a team that will play the likes of Grambling State. Isn’t that a very large jump?

(Or am I missing something, i.e., an inclination on the Selma campus to come in second in a match v. the lions and the tigers of collegiate football? If someone would kindly set me straight, it would be greatly appreciated.)

  24. Being a 2000 Concordia University Selma graduate, I am insulted to come upon this infantile blog/debate via Google. Four points… 1. Peterson’s is out of date!!! Last fall it was 3:1 on campus. MEN being the 3!!! 2. Concordia’s main emphasis is a Christian Education NOT sports. 3. Concordia was talking about Football when I applied my high school junior year (1994.) I think Concordia just wants to play ball to attract some athletic kids. 4. Quit belittling them AND each other and just see what happens…Peace. P.S. Enrollment was over 900 or 1000 last fall; maybe you should quit believing or filter everything you read in books, on the internet or hear someone say :o)

  25. From the looks of Concordia’s Web site, I would suggest perhaps it’s Concordia who should do a better job getting the word out about how many students it has, etc. Those guides rely on schools filling out the annual questionnaire (I have seen such forms) and if they don’t then it’s their loss.

  26. The Peterson’s I just read says “902 undergraduate students” and says “updated 1/19/2005” I agree the Concordia site needs a serious renovation… Peace.

  27. CONCORDIA WILL WIN AND WE WILL SHOCK SOME PEOPLE DONT THINK ITS A GAME IF THEY SAY WE FINISHED WITH 64 THEN BELIEVE IT WE FINISHED WITH 64
