McMurry is holding a news conference at this hour to announce its decision regarding its Indians nickname. The NCAA has told the university it must change its name or face sanctions regarding hosting postseason play.
Previous coverage of this issue below. When we know more, we’ll pass it along.

Can we hold a name the McMurry Mascot Contest?
My first entry into the contest: The McMurry “Mcgillicutties”
Second entry: The McMurry “Ralph Turners”
1144, I’m not sure I want to weigh in. I’m so ticked off at the NCAA over this whole thing that I wouldn’t be very cheery on this subject.
I wish they had had the resources of North Dakota and chosen to file suit.
All joking aside. This seems like a slippery slope the NCAA has been going down.
What’s next?
I’ll just wait for Peta to start to pressure the NCAA about animal logos/mascots next.
Good luck McMurry…
They can still keep Indian Stadium can’t they?
I think they’ll have to change it to Native American Stadium. ;-(
What a crock of ****
Once again the NCAA shows it’s infinite wisdom. Why don’t they spend their time and money on trying to come up with a 1A playoff system instead of trying to be politically correct on forcing changes to colleges team nicknames. Unfortunately DIII schools don’t have the resources to fight this in court. It’s a sad day for McMurry. Good luck guys!
I suspect that the NCAA is caving in to pressure from a handful of groups out there that are threatening boycotts, etc. Why on earth would the NCAA get involved in an issue like this otherwise? Pay attention folks, this issue is much larger than the NCAA and mascots. In fact, it is much larger than athletics. Get ready secondary schools, if you aren’t getting pressure already, you will be.
I read this yesterday before anyone had really responded. I wrote a response saying how stupid this all seems. Then I erased it wondering if I was being “insensitive.” This is a real shame and the NCAA should be ashamed. Stupid! I heard the Netherlands gov’t is threatening to impose sanctions on the United States if Union does not relinquish it’s school name?
I want to thank Pat Coleman for his support and for this forum to inform D3 fans about the mascot issue at McMurry University. It is now time to move own. The university will work out the issues necessary.
At the Friday press conference, McMurry University Athletic Director/ Professor of Religion/ former McM Cross Country coach/Cherokee descendant of the “Trail of Tears” (how about those for credentials) Bill Libby stated that he was always satisfied with the way that the University had treated the Native American issue. The NCAA however had a “zero tolerance” mindset to anything other than a strict application of their very narrow guidelines.
I must remind everyone that the NCAA did not find McMurry University to be hostile and abusive in its dealings with Native American issues. Rather, the NCAA maintained that the university could not ensure an environment that might not become hostile and abusive.
It is time to move on. As Dr Russell said, the University has now settled the issue. We can allocate resources to educating students. The projections of expenses to change from the “Indians” mascot including uniforms, facilities, scoreboards, media presentations, websites, other communications, radio and television advertisements and other miscellaneous expenses have an upper estimate of $155,000. The university has considered an unfavorable outcome in the matter in recent expenditures, and so hopefully, it will not be so high.
Thanks to Pat Coleman and D3football.com and D3hoops.com for the support.
One point of clarification. It is my opinion about the strict application of the NCAA guidelines, and not Professor Libby’s.
I think that since the NCAA demanded these changes that McM should submit a bill for the associated costs.
These are bizarre times we live in. Why not get after Oklahoma, whose nickname glorifies cheaters or all the teams whose names glorfiy murderers and thieves (pirates and raiders purple or otherwise). The whole things is stupid and absurd and the only sane reason to joint the NAIA. And considering how money hungry the NCAA is, I wish a few schools with offensive native american nicknames would at least threaten to leave. Dumb, Dumb, Dumb
How come the NCAA approved Florida State U’s appeal? Appears that they play favorites on this issue.
