Immediate thoughts on quarterfinals

Wow, what a day of football. And the day ended for us a lot like the Miracle in the Mud day ended. In this case, it was with both Pat Cummings and Keith McMillan driving home glued to their cellphones as I had two phones, one to each of them, sitting on the speakers of my laptop.

That’s how it came down in 2000: Keith and I were driving back from a game at Widener and my wife set up a phone next to the computer speaker, allowing me to listen and relay the play by play to Keith.

I hope this wasn’t the de facto national championship game in McMinnville, today. I have to believe Mount Union is going to have something to say about it. But kudos to UW-Whitewater for carrying the WIAC flag into the semifinals and not just phoning it in.

Kudos also to Wesley, for taking its Cinderella run to the semis as well. I don’t know if they’ve got much of a chance at Whitewater, but not sure how many gave them a chance at UMHB either. This is a great run for that program.

Capital put on a good show as well in falling short. Lewis Howes, who set a Division III single-game receiving record a few years back at Principia, wanted to see what he could do at a higher level. Today we found out (12 catches, 245 yards, four TDs).

What’s left of Rowan makes the trip to Alliance, Ohio. The two haven’t met since Dec. 11, 1999, when Rowan upset Mount Union and ended the Purple Raiders’ then-record win streak.

Should be an interesting week.

  1. Love this site — fun seeing so many people as crazy about D3 football. Out in the real world the response I get is ‘D3–what’s that.’

I’m a Linfield grad who lives in Utah. It was fun 2 years ago when Brett Elliott announced he was leaving the Univ of Utah to head northwest. It’s been a great move for him, obviously.

Here’s my question — any of you know of any successful NFL QBs who came from D3? I just wonder whether Elliott will have a shot. I think he may have to play a year or 2 in Canada.

Last weekend’s game was a heartbreaker. I listened to it over this web site. But it is neat to see new blood in the semis. I’ll pull for W-W to win it all.

Last year we flew up to see Linfield-Rowan in the semis. 56-0 wasn’t much of a game. Hope they push MU harder this time around.

  2. I remember him. Thanks. I’ll see if anyone else submits as well. I know Linfield had a defensive back in the pros 20-25 years ago…but it’s a pretty unusual leap.
How would you like to be Elliott? If I were him, I would firmly believe “If I don’t get hurt, Urban Meyer rides ME into the Fiesta Bowl and I get the 50-million-$ contract.”

But every quote I’ve ever read from him he’s never sounded the least bit bitter — that’s why I wish him the best (and may he go to a team better than the 49ers!)

  3. Lodon Fletcher is with The Buffalo Bills if I recall. He was from John Carrol. And the Green Bay Packers had a Wis-Lacrosse wide receiver Shroeder. And then Mount Union has a couple of guys playing NFL Europe football.

NWC, according to everyone is a terribly weak conference yet has a 17-9 playoff record and two of the past 6 National Champions (PLU ’99, Linfield ’04) since leaving NAIA (where numerous championships were won) and joining the NCAA in 1998.

  5. Thanks — I just found the NFL list.

You guys do a fantastic job with this site. I just discovered you last season during Linfield’s run. What great information.

Saturday I was pulling my hair out because the “listen-live” link at Linfield’s web site wasn’t playing on my computer. So just on a lark I came to this site. First I discover the real time score updates…then I discover you actually have a link to hear the game that DID work.

Thanks for your hard work. It’s sure fun to keep up with our teams through this site!

  6. All starting offense players last year are all gone. Most of offense this year is completely new. We had a great game towards Trinity but the coaching plus offense hurt UMHB in the end. But UMHB is a great team and only 7 years old and has come along way. The future will show how great UMHB really is. All teams are good just others deal with winning in a different tone.

  7. There are NFL Coaches with D3 ties

His Job isn’t safe right now. But, The Houston Texans Head coach is a Mt. Union Grad. who did play for the Raiders.

  8. Mike Riley, former San Diego Charger head coach — now head at Oregon State, was a defensive backs coach at Linfield when I attended there.

And former Saints GM Randy Mueller (now an ESPN commentator — I don’t think he’s with a new NFL team) was the starting QB on Linfield’s unbeaten 1982 NAIA championship team.

  9. Anyone attending the Mt. Union / Rowan game? I will be on the Visitors side on the 50 yard line up against the wall of the press box. I promise you will be able to pick me out. I’ve had my tickets for 22 years now. If you care to look me up. Look me up, we can visit the Neighborhood INN after the game. On me!

  10. Jim…. I’m on the same side… had my ticket for the last 4 years and I will be keeping them even after my nephew graduates… I’m between the 40-45 over by the Mount Tunnel… If your buying… I’m in!!!

Or is that offer only for “true” visitors….

Also, are you part of the “First Down” group??? Becuase sometimes… that stuff is hilarious…

  11. Are you referring to the Purple wig? The guy who is yelling FIRST DOWN to the visitors? I sit just to the right of them. In fact, one of them is my old High school baseball coach

  12. Ya… those are the guys… I personally enjoy the “beep, beep, beep” that comes with penalties…. Classic stuff right there… I’m over by the other railing….

  13. It’s been a quiet this afternoon! When is D3Football.com going to list their picks for the final 4?

  14. The Stagg Bowl should be played in the Midwest.

    Mizzou MOFO,

You obviously didn’t understand my very factual post.

    GO UW WHITEWATER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  15. “NWC, according to everyone is a terribly weak conference yet has a 17-9 playoff record and two of the past 6 National Champions (PLU ‘99, Linfield ‘04) since leaving NAIA (where numerous championships were won) and joining the NCAA in 1998.”

heavy dizzle, I’ve never heard anyone say the NWC is a terribly weak conference, let alone “everyone.” The NWC, if I’m not mistaken, has always been ranked as one of the top conferences by this website. Do you mean the MWC?

  16. No, i meant the NWC, though you are right and i should not have said everyone. Some people are stuck on other conferences with historically weak post-season showings. I was not referring to the website itself but some of the posters/fans of other leagues/conferences.

  17. Sorry I missed all this!!!!
SEANGOP… this statement by you “You say that the WIAC playoff record is not as good as others, but it doesn’t really matter, you are playing this years team” pertains to WESLEY too!!!! THIS is this years team not last years, not the last 20 years and Welsey is that good. They have continually stopped top notch rushing offenses.
    UhWhoah….this statement proves you’re a MORON!!!!!
“Wesley will not be winning the STAGG BOWL because a real team has respect on and off the field. I saw Wesley play and they were rude and didn’t have any kind of sportsmanship.
They were giving late hits and trying to start fights. To me and many others that isn’t a STAGG BOWL winning team or a team that should represent D3Football.” You make a blanket statement like that. When did you see Wesley play. IF it was HMB game then I know why you are crying!!! You got you A$$ kicked

  18. seanGOP…..you are obviously not the brightest guy in the world. Augustana may have won (4) straight championships in a row, but Mount Union (I know you can’t spell Union…it must be that great WW education) won (3) in a row twice and (6) out of seven. Nobody…including Augustana ever did that (to my knowledge). Year in and year out the OAC is one of the best conferences in the country, if not THE best !! If Capital was in the South bracket, who knows, they may be playing WW this weekend…we’ll never know. Mount Union, Capital, Ohio Northern and John Carroll are normally the strength of this conference. In my opinion, whoever comes in second in the OAC should automatically be given a D3 birth and put into a different bracket than the OAC champion. Capital proved my point this year. I think that its a shame that the NCAA chose to put both OAC schools in the same bracket, but that’s another story.

You say that it doesn’t matter what the WIAC playoff record is since it only includes from when the playoffs were expanded to the current number of teams. Are you kidding me??? Since the playoffs were expanded your conference is a LOUSY 6-7…I believe that’s under .500 (.462 actual). Does this sound like the record of a conference who is the BEST in D3…I don’t think so. Think before you write. I read your blogs and they make me laugh…..very entertaining to say the least. I will wish you good luck this weekend….remember, for both of us to meet in the Stagg Bowl we both must win this weekend. I do, however, hope we do meet….this way I will continue to be entertained by your laughable phrases and comments. Later CheeseHead !! Mount Union 27, Rowan 17

  19. seanGOP….put down your crayons and respond. I need to be entertained and YOUR Blogs are VERY entertaining !!!!!!!

  20. ShawnGOP

There seems to be a little bit of short memory loss here. Mount Union did play WIAC teams, specifically Whitewater, two years in a row. Do you recall what the scores of those two games were? I’ll let you look them up.

Our one loss this year only goes to show you how tough the OAC really is.
What excuse do you use again………..”Oh we just beat each other up in the regular season so we can’t do well in the playoffs.” Your conference must have really been down this year to have a team win out. Guess you will have to change that story…..at least for this year.

Come to me when you have a WIAC school with 54-55 or 110 victories to talk about. I think there is still one other team that could have gone undefeated in the WIAC, you just haven’t played them yet.

  21. seanGOP — By the way…..You walking cheeseball, if you had any sense or smarts, you would know that Mount Union played the Whitewater Cheeseheads twice (a home and away) and came away winners both times. It would be different if you had the facts and knew what you were talking about….but its plainly obvious you have NO CLUE !! Just for the record per your note to me and I quote, “play a WIAC team and see what happens”. Well….we played a WIAC team twice and kicked your ____ !!!
    Later Goudahead !!!!!

  22. “In my opinion, whoever comes in second in the OAC should automatically be given a D3 birth and put into a different bracket than the OAC champion. Capital proved my point this year. I think that its a shame that the NCAA chose to put both OAC schools in the same bracket…”

Hmmm… I thought if the competition is too tough, then get out of the kitchen? Isn’t that what you typed earlier?

  23. Yes…the competition has been too tough for all of the other OAC schools other than Mount. Its also been too tough for every other D3 school 7 out of the last 11 years.

  24. The program at Mount Union over the last 20 years speaks for itself. They have (20) loses in the last 20 years…..gotta go !!

  25. The BIG BAD WIAC !!!

    2002 — Mount Union 44, Wisconsin Gouda Boys 21
2003 — Mount Union 40, Wisconsin Chedder Cheese Balls 17

We played the WIAC twice and walked away winners both times….convincingly, very convincingly !! Actually, that’s pretty much a TAIL WIPPING…..wouldn’t you say.

  26. Where are all of you WIAC boys…..cat got your tongue????? Don’t walk away with your CHEESE between your legs….just walk away !@!

  27. I can’t believe that I haven’t heard from my WIAC Limburger Boy, but particularly seanGOP…..where did you go Shawn???

  28. You’ve posted the last five comments. Why don’t you take a deep breath for a while? You’re going to drive people away.

  29. I think there are a few folks that could stand to read the post on sportsmanship. A good healthy debate is one thing, this p_ _ _ ing contest is getting old.

  30. This has nothing to do with sportsmanship allsky7, but it does have to do with writing the FACTS. If you’re going to write in this or any other Blog write down the facts, not FICTION. If seanGOP was a real writer, he’d need to re-tract most of his stories because he simply doesn’t have all of the FACTS. We live in a free country and ALL of us have our own opinions, thats one of the reasons why I live in this great country. I respresent myself….thats right BIGMUCFAN represents himself. I don’t represent any other MUC fan, just me. If there’s others out there who don’t like what I have to say, or how I say it, too bad. One thing that you will always be assured, I will stick to the facts, even though I am a biased Mount fan. I make NO excuses.

mizzou_mofia — he probably is an Augustana Fan. He’s still ____ off that his team got the “CRAP KICKED OUT OF THEM”. Hey, I really don’t blame him. If that was my team that got the “CRAP KICKED OUT OF THEM”, I’d be ____ also. One more time…..if many of you don’t like what I have to say, I’m not going to lose sleep over it. I don’t represent anyone but “ME”. As far as I’m concerned this isn’t a popularity contest. I will not be intiminated by any of you. Also remember….much of this is ALL in fun. Don’t take it sooo damn serious !! OUT……

PS: seanGOP now has a new name and I got from my friend mizzou_mofia.
Your new name…and you should use it for future passwords — “the UWW coattail rider”. It fits….it really does…now drop your crayons and respond.

  31. All of these comments are people voicing their opinion and are supporting their teams. Just so all of these people understand. In D3Football. There is a playoff at this level. If your team is the best team in this great nation. Then you will be the last team standing. This year everyone mentioned how tough the west bracket was. Well, regardless of where those teams were placed. You would probably meet them down the road anyhow. A few years back. This happened to Mt. Union. They started moving the brackets around and Rowan and Mt. Union would meet in the Semis rather than the Championship Game. I am a Mt.Union Fan and I will state this. ( The Rowan Profs are a Dynasty) Just not as good as Mt. Union was at the time. This also happend at the Pro level when The Buffalo Bills were in 4 Super Bowls and lost. Didn’t make them a bad team. This weekend should be a great game and may the best team win. For those who sit here and say their team of conference is better. Just remember this. To be the best you have to beat the best, NO MATTER WHERE YOU MEET THEM.

  32. I’d like to acknowledge the accomplishments of Mount Union. They are just as impressive as some of the great football programs throughout the history of college football. However, bigmucfan is a real downer. Sorry, but he makes all Mount Union fans seem to be arrogant, condescending jerks.

SeanGOP has contributed a lot of good posts on this web site. He doesn’t deserve the personal attacks. Use of names such as Gouda Boys and Cheese Cheddar Head is also derogatory and insulting.

  33. Quit being so hard on SeanGOP, he is not a “UWW coattail rider” since he has been a fan of UWW and the WIAC for months now. We adopted him and welcomed him on the bandwagon!! We’re keeping your seat warm too, KeithMac , for when you return this week with your predictions!! LOL

  34. bigmucfan, etc.

You are right that in this country we do have freedom of speech. Sorta. You can’t yell “FIRE” in a crowded movie theater. Guess I’m just an old school guy. Bear Bryant said (or is given credit for saying) “You knock your opponent down, you help him up, and tell him you will be right back”. When you are good, you don’t have to tell everyone about it over and over ad nauseum. It shows. I don’t think there is any reasonably unbiased person out there that wouldn’t agree that Mt. Union has been king of the mountain for quite a few years. We can argue conference strength, schedule strength, blah..blah..blah but until other schools start winning in the Stagg Bowl it really doesn’t matter.
Is it really necessary to get personal as some of the recent post have done? “Idiot”, “moron”, “goudahead”, are a few that come to mind. Having class doesn’t cost a dime but is worth a fortune.
This sir, is my expression of that free speech thing you mentioned. Am looking forward to a great weekend of D3 college football. Best of luck to your team! And which one was that again? 🙂

  35. Doesn’t it make you miss the son of the Ferrum coach and the president of the Ferrum student body? At least they acted like normal people. 🙂

  36. People make fun of WI because of the cheese??? bigmucfan, tough guy!! and to do it in 6 straight posts. WOW!

  37. bvboom

Mount Union will be heard from for a long time. You WW fans must really be enjoying yourselves since this is the first time WW has been “heard from” this late in the playoffs ever.

This is old hat for Mount Union fans. I hope we make it past Rowan so we can at least have an opportunity to play WW. Even though most of you are 100% certain that WW is unbeatable. We shall see.

  38. Not all Mt. Union fans are bad people. If you or Rowan beat us. We will still be proud of what we have done. We know we will be knocking on the door again. When you have 200 players to choose from. You tend to put a good team on the field. Just grow up and stop the name calling and cheer for your team.

  39. Nearly unbeaten, then, because almost every OAC team other than Mount Union to make the field has been eliminated BY Mount Union.
