Support D-III on USAToday.com

Moravian’s Matt Sheridan has been nominated for USAToday.com’s college football player of the week and needs the support of all of Division III against nominees from much larger schools. Vote now!

He blocked three punts in Moravian’s win against King’s on Saturday, tying a Division III record.

Voting ends at noon EDT on Tuesday. He had 6% of the vote with the first 6150 votes cast.

  1. I should mention — it’s under Quick Question, you need the Flash plug-in to vote, and since it looks like the server is getting hit pretty hard right now, you might need to refresh to get the poll to load.

  2. I can’t help but cringe when I see that the blurb about Sheridan says: “Sheridan, a defensive back at Division III Moravian College,…”

Why does USA Today have to qualify Moravian College as D3? The school can and should stand alone in the reference. It sounds as if the newspaper is (in)advertantly adding bias to the voting and trying to cheapen Sheridan’s achievement. I think most sports fans outside this board dismiss Div-III as the ugly stepchild of “real” college ball, but we all know that is far from the accurate.

Additionally, you don’t see USA Today pointing out that Ricky Santos from New Hampshire is “just” a Division 1-AA player.

The voting playing field is far from level in this instance.

  3. Not a surprise Reggie McNeal is leading the voting. The link was posted on TexAgs.com asking for votes. Aggies are a rabid bunch.

  4. He’s gotten 14% of the next 2,000 votes — if we had three weeks to vote we could get him into the top spot. 🙂

  5. As I leave work tonight, he has 10% of 10,376 votes cast, meaning he has about 669 of the 4,226 since we posted the announcement, or 16%.

  6. Thanks to d3football.com for putting this out there for all to see. I’m Matt’s Dad and it was a thrill to be at the game. We appreciate all the support and we are awaitng the 12 noon announcement!

  7. The ballot box-stuffing Texas A&M voters got their guy named. Still, the power of D-III nation got Sheridan second place in the online balloting, which is pretty good.

OK, I just used the term D-III nation. Shoot me now.

Anyway, I guess the moral of the story is, roll up some numbers against a weak team, then get all your fans to vote online. Worked for Texas A&M.
