Posting Up changes coming

As you might have observed, over the past year both D3hoops.com and D3football.com have suffered occasional slowdowns, times at which one site or the other would move at a crawl because of high traffic.

We attempted to alleviate that in February by moving Posting Up onto a separate server within the same host. While that worked, it was only a temporary measure — we have more planned.

Unfortunately, our message board software itself, which we have been using since Posting Up opened in November 1998, is part of the problem. Although we love Discus because it was written by programmers associated with Hope College, we have outgrown it and it can not support a site of our size.

To this end, we’re changing message board software. We’re also combining Posting Up with Post Patterns, and we’re putting the combined message board on a separate server. We believe this will make both D3hoops.com and D3football.com run more smoothly all year.

The new board will also have more modern features, the types of things you’re used to if you use forums on other sites. Your username and password will carry over to the new site and we’ll transfer the posts. To this end, we’re temporarily shutting down new user registration effective immediately, and will shut down the entire board sometime on Saturday evening before the transfer. When all is complete we’ll put up the new link.

If you are registered for both Posting Up and Post Patterns, we are attempting to determine that now so we can combine them into one account, with one post total. We’ll attempt to use your password from Post Patterns, since that sport is more active at the moment.

  1. I’m testing out the conversion software right now. Wasn’t thrilled with the first test, so I am rearranging the boards on Posting Up to see if it will react better.

  2. Unfortunately, no. There were too many bridges to burn … err, to cross with combining the two boards. We’re working on Plan B and might be able to take another shot at it Tuesday night.

  3. Well good luck with it. I’m looking forward to the new board. I can get fussed at and called names in a more fancy looking fashon. 🙂

  4. Don’t get too accustomed to it. It will go back to the old way when we move over. The conversion software didn’t work with it in the old format so I eliminated the regional breakdown, but it will return.

  5. Will there still be the same side links from the former posting up pages? It was nice to be able to just hit the link on the side to go to the front page.

  6. …and what’s with the demotion? All of a sudden I’m just all-region?

But seeriously, I like the new boards. It might take me a while to figure out all the features, but it should improve things. I like not having to scroll to the bottom to find the most recent post–very nice addition.

  7. Hoops Fan, regarding the other links, I am still learning the software myself. I would love to add those, believe me. As for All-Region, yes, we added that and it’s one more hoop (ha!) to jump through.

  8. I realize these new boards will have some kinks in them, but this is frustrating. I was unable to re-register until just now – I received numerous error messages when trying to previously. Also, I am unable to view any of the boards after clicking on them – the screen simply refuses to change no matter what I click on or how long I wait.

I know I am being cynical, but did we trade slow boards on Saturdays for slow boards all the time? Is this something that will also be resolved soon? I am not the only one experiencing these problems, am I?

  9. Also, you put my Commonwealth Coast Conference board in the West instead of the NE. I was lost there for a while, but I’m ok now.

  10. by the way, how come when i click on the poll button it says i cant modify just any post?

  11. i figured out what the problem is: the link is wrong! i ended up having to copy and paste the mdify link for my last post into the location/address bar, and then change the action to poll instead of post. The current link on each conference has it where you would have to edit th first post on the board, so if you arent that user then you cant post a poll with the poll button.
