Final public NCAA regional rankings

These are the final published NCAA Division III men’s basketball regional rankings. There is one secret ranking on Selection Sunday that we do not get to see.

Remember there are three ways a game can be classified as in region.

Through games of Sunday, Feb. 22, 2009.

  1. Great Lakes men:
    “3. Carnegie Mellon 18-6 14-5
    5. Wooster 19-6 18-4
    4. Calvin 17-7 12-2”

(It’s like that on the NCAA site too.) So, who’s number 4?

  2. I think CMU is just tied for third. They’re not tied with anyone else… but they’re tied nonetheless… thus no #4!

If this is the biggest (only?) gaff from the NCAA this year, I’ll take it!

  3. Whoops… I didn’t look at it close enough… I thouhht there was no #4… ignore that last post…

  4. My first thought about the men’s numbers is that the East Regional Committee has injected some sanily into the rankings.

We saw a recent running of Pabegg’s numbers giving Hamilton the #2 slot in the East and going ahead of conference leading St Lawrence.

The second thing that strikes me is that the Atlantic Region might not get a Pool C bid, if Richard Stockton gets the Pool A. Montclair State and Willy Pat lost semifinal matches in the NJAC last night.

Carnegie Mellon goes to Rochester on Saturday. I think that this is a must-win game for both teams at the Palestra. CMU can consolidate their Pool C chance. In fact, this game may be for the last UAA Pool C bid, itself.

  6. Can a case be made for Montclair State? They went 20 – 3 after an 0 – 3 start, won their division, played competitively against Stockton, beat other ranked regional Atlantic teams St. Joe’s (LI) and Willy P (twice), had won 9 straight before losing in the league semis by 1 on a “long distance 3” by Rutger-Nwk, – whom they had beaten twice during the season. As of today, their strength of schedule is a competitive 58. Is their most recent lost that devasting for a Pool C bid?

  7. Curious why McMurry is ranked 6th in the South and Mary Hardin-Baylor is not ranked. UMHB beat McMurry twice and they have similiar records.
