Hamilton in the East was a surprise – not to their record, but to their third spot.

Am I seeing things or is Swarthmore not on the Mid-Atlantic rankings? I have no idea how they got that, considering that they beat Johns Hopkins and Dickinson and have yet to play Muhlenberg.

Biggest surprise is the complete absence of Swarthmore. According to the data sheets, they had a low Strength-of-Schedule, but so low that is would completely keep them out of the top 8 in the region given they are still undefeated with wins over JHU and Dickinson who are ranked?!?!? If the release is accurate and the committee intentionally placed them below 8 other schools then I think the committee is deserving of some serious criticism.

Wow! Dominican was left out as well!?!?!? What’s up?!? Not noting any other shockers like that, but note that Redlands, Dubuque, and USMMA were not ranked. Need to take some more time to take in the regional data (OOWP, OOWP, SOS).

Dominican’s absence has to be a mistake. And it may very well be. I do know that the men’s process took longer than did the women, so perhaps there was some head-scratching going on the committee level?

Swat can be explained based on the result from F&M. My guess is that they are just behind them. But I doubt the Top 25 voters will agree! And while I don’t agree with how the NSCAA poll is put together, they did give Swat the No. 1 ranking in the land.

Jim: That doesn’t explain Swat’s victories over Johns Hopkins and Dickinson, though. I’m totally stumped as to why the committee would just ignore that.

Speaking to friends in the NathCon, they tell me that the National Committee has instructed the Regional Committees not to rank any team with an SOS below .500. Supposedly, in last week’s non-published practice poll, Dominican was #1 in the Central, but this week the chair of the region was told to not consider them.

There’s no such thing in the published criteria, so I don’t know how why they think this is permissible.

I am not attached to Swat, but have seen them play a number of times. In addition to winning against Hopkins (at Hopkins) and Dickinson, they also beat RPI. Hard to see how they are not ranked at all. Seems silly.

It is all about Swat’s “index” – that is, the stat that the committee uses to rank teams. If that number falls below a certain level based on strength of schedule, etc., then the team associated with that number (in this case, Swat), wouldn’t make the list.

So the real question is, how accurate is a stat based system versus a system that looks at several variables/inputs? If the coaches and SIDs of this site’s poll believe that Dominican is the No. 2 team in the land, would you believe a statistic that says otherwise? How about if that stat claimed that Dominican is not only NOT the second best team in the country, but they are not even a Top 25 team? Interesting…

Considering Dominican has three shoutout victories over “ranked” opponents in the Central Region, I would say that any statistical model that generated the rankings is useless. And that doesn’t even take into account that Dominican is undefeated at 13-0-1, having allowed only two goals all season, AND is ranked # 2 nationally by the subjective polls. Dominican is likely to win the NAC, but leaving them out of the national tournament is beyond imagination…

The word I’ve heard is that the NCAA National Committee has backed off of using a minimum of .500 SOS to be ranked after many members pointed out correctly that there is no such provision in the championship handbook.

Expect to see both Dominican and Swarthmore in tomorrow’s regional rankings.
