INDIANAPOLIS &emdash; The NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Committee has released its first regional poll with records through October 19. The top teams in each of the eight regions are listed below. The next poll will be released October 28. The committee ranks 15 percent of the eligible teams in each region.

All 3 of these teams have been playing very well lately, and all have only 1 loss. Trinity and Merchant Marine haven’t cracked the Top 25 this season (yet), but should be strong consideration as they are at 8-1 and 12-1 respectively. And Dominican fell out of the poll earlier after a loss and few draws. The Stars are 8-1-3.

Keep an eye on these teams as they have all played some good opposition and thus should continue to do well.

This past weekend was a great one for the New Jersey City University women’s soccer. Their 5-1 win over Rutgers-Newark snapped a long NJAC losing streak, and their leading scorer sophomore Julia Caseres snagged a hat trick, helping the team move to 7-4 on the season. Caseres is also the women’s NCAA D3 national leader in goals scored with 18 and 44 points total.

The Gothic Knight’s NJAC losing streak had gone on for 103 matches, so it was really about time for something positive to happen. A losing streak, like a winning streak, can’t go on forever. Read about the match in this release from NJCU’s excellent SID, Ira Thor.

Then in this week’s Sports Illustrated, who shows up in the Faces in the Crowd section but Julia Caseres. Often times in Division III athletics, great work goes unnoticed by everyone but the team and a loyal group of fans and parents. It is truly a great thing when the national press recognizes excellent performance at our level in the NCAA.

It truly has been a good week for NJCU, it’s women’s soccer team, it’s fans, and most certainly, for Julia Caseres.

Maybe the Top 25 voters missed one. RPI continues to quickly roll along and win matches, now at 6-0-1 on the season. The Engineers received votes in the last Top 25 poll and just missed the 25th spot.

The Engineers defeated Hamilton on Friday evening 1-0. This team has not allowed a goal all season, which is an impressive stat no matter who one plays. But the strength of schedule variable in this equation might the reason that RPI still hasn’t broke through into the poll.

All that changes with today’s match against tough No. 8 Hobart. A win against the Statesmen would go a long way to alleviating any doubts about the Engineer’s strength. It won’t be easy.

This must have been a great one to watch! 0-0 until the 79th minute and then Blue Jay Sean Duggan gets an assisted goal for the winner. Salisbury had a 13-9 advantage in shots, but both sides had 4 shots on goal. The box score is here.

Johns Hopkins improves to 7-2 and enjoys a hard fought win that puts them a bit more on the national stage. Salisbury falls to 7-1.

No. 7 Christopher Newport pulled out a 2-1 win over Roanoke on Tuesday evening. The Captains keep on winning and are now 6-1. No. 13 Rochester also won but did it with some ease, scoring 4 goals against Nazareth. With that 4-1 victory, the Yellowjackets are now 5-0-2. Scott Cady had 2 goals in the match. No. 22 Principia edged by Wash U 3-2 on a PK, moving to 6-0. Some thought that Principia’s schedule was not as strong as others in the Top 25 poll; tonight’s result should earn Principia a bit of respect.

The No. 19 Wash U women won tonight in a 7-2 win over Principia. Caryn Rosoff had a hat trick for the Bears, who move to 6-2. On Friday, the Bears play Division I Southeast Missouri State. Should be interesting! No. 3 Williams had an easy time in a 6-0 win over Western Connecticut. The Ephs are 5-0. Elsewhere, MIT was a 2-1 winner over Salem State, and Washington and Lee beat Hollins 6-0.

In other men’s action, Roger Williams was a 1-0 winner over Salve Regina, Colby was a 6-1 winner over Husson, Wooster beat Marietta 3-0, and Rhode Island College was a 7-2 winner over Bridgewater State.

Hobart is 5-0 and has 3 players with 2 goals each so far this season: Tommy Hayes, Michael Moulton, and Tony Yeboah.  7 other players have scored in the Statesmen first five matches.  Hobart has outscored opponents 13-1, proving that defense is part of their game plan.

Rochester is 4-0-1 on the season, playing Clarkson to a scoreless draw last week.  The Yellowjacket’s leading scorers are J.J. Dennstedt and Jake Cargill with 2 goals apiece.  The team has outscored their opponents 9-3 and typically takes twice the amount of shots allowed.

Hobart may have a 1 goal edge via their home field advantage, but this should be a great match for anyone in the Geneva area this weekend.  And Rochester really isn’t that far away!

If you are around the Chicagoland area on Friday, you might want to head out to Wheaton and watch Loras, a 2008 Final Four team, take on Wheaton at 7:00 at Bean Stadium.

Wheaton is coming off of a tight 1-0 win over Dominican and may be feeling some positive momentum.  They will need it as Loras (4-0-1) is currently ranked No. 6 in the nation in the D3soccer.com Top 25 poll, and has not lost to Wheaton (4-2) in 7 years; the DuHawks defeated Wheaton 1-0 in 2008, tied 1-1 and won 1-0 in the post-season in 2007, and won 2-1 in 2006.  Wheaton last defeated Loras 2-1 in 2002.

Wheaton will be keeping their eye on the DuHawks leading scorer, Miguel Bonilla; he has 4 goals and 1 assist on the season.  Matt Swartz is leading Wheaton with 4 goals and 2 assists.

After a considerable amount of effort by coaches, SIDs, and the D3soccer.com staff, we have finally released our new Top 25 men’s and women’s poll.  We hope you like them.

Until we get a more matches into the season, it will be difficult to judge the strength of schedules, but I think the voters did a good job judging the relative performance of the programs and quality wins booked.  And while the top 10 programs in each poll might be somewhat clear, the picture isn’t quite as clear as one moves thorugh the poll – there are many programs which are still undefeated.  We’ll certainly know more as the season moves on.
