Maybe the Top 25 voters missed one. RPI continues to quickly roll along and win matches, now at 6-0-1 on the season. The Engineers received votes in the last Top 25 poll and just missed the 25th spot.

The Engineers defeated Hamilton on Friday evening 1-0. This team has not allowed a goal all season, which is an impressive stat no matter who one plays. But the strength of schedule variable in this equation might the reason that RPI still hasn’t broke through into the poll.

All that changes with today’s match against tough No. 8 Hobart. A win against the Statesmen would go a long way to alleviating any doubts about the Engineer’s strength. It won’t be easy.

This must have been a great one to watch! 0-0 until the 79th minute and then Blue Jay Sean Duggan gets an assisted goal for the winner. Salisbury had a 13-9 advantage in shots, but both sides had 4 shots on goal. The box score is here.

Johns Hopkins improves to 7-2 and enjoys a hard fought win that puts them a bit more on the national stage. Salisbury falls to 7-1.

No. 7 Christopher Newport pulled out a 2-1 win over Roanoke on Tuesday evening. The Captains keep on winning and are now 6-1. No. 13 Rochester also won but did it with some ease, scoring 4 goals against Nazareth. With that 4-1 victory, the Yellowjackets are now 5-0-2. Scott Cady had 2 goals in the match. No. 22 Principia edged by Wash U 3-2 on a PK, moving to 6-0. Some thought that Principia’s schedule was not as strong as others in the Top 25 poll; tonight’s result should earn Principia a bit of respect.

The No. 19 Wash U women won tonight in a 7-2 win over Principia. Caryn Rosoff had a hat trick for the Bears, who move to 6-2. On Friday, the Bears play Division I Southeast Missouri State. Should be interesting! No. 3 Williams had an easy time in a 6-0 win over Western Connecticut. The Ephs are 5-0. Elsewhere, MIT was a 2-1 winner over Salem State, and Washington and Lee beat Hollins 6-0.

In other men’s action, Roger Williams was a 1-0 winner over Salve Regina, Colby was a 6-1 winner over Husson, Wooster beat Marietta 3-0, and Rhode Island College was a 7-2 winner over Bridgewater State.

Hobart is 5-0 and has 3 players with 2 goals each so far this season: Tommy Hayes, Michael Moulton, and Tony Yeboah.  7 other players have scored in the Statesmen first five matches.  Hobart has outscored opponents 13-1, proving that defense is part of their game plan.

Rochester is 4-0-1 on the season, playing Clarkson to a scoreless draw last week.  The Yellowjacket’s leading scorers are J.J. Dennstedt and Jake Cargill with 2 goals apiece.  The team has outscored their opponents 9-3 and typically takes twice the amount of shots allowed.

Hobart may have a 1 goal edge via their home field advantage, but this should be a great match for anyone in the Geneva area this weekend.  And Rochester really isn’t that far away!

If you are around the Chicagoland area on Friday, you might want to head out to Wheaton and watch Loras, a 2008 Final Four team, take on Wheaton at 7:00 at Bean Stadium.

Wheaton is coming off of a tight 1-0 win over Dominican and may be feeling some positive momentum.  They will need it as Loras (4-0-1) is currently ranked No. 6 in the nation in the D3soccer.com Top 25 poll, and has not lost to Wheaton (4-2) in 7 years; the DuHawks defeated Wheaton 1-0 in 2008, tied 1-1 and won 1-0 in the post-season in 2007, and won 2-1 in 2006.  Wheaton last defeated Loras 2-1 in 2002.

Wheaton will be keeping their eye on the DuHawks leading scorer, Miguel Bonilla; he has 4 goals and 1 assist on the season.  Matt Swartz is leading Wheaton with 4 goals and 2 assists.

After a considerable amount of effort by coaches, SIDs, and the D3soccer.com staff, we have finally released our new Top 25 men’s and women’s poll.  We hope you like them.

Until we get a more matches into the season, it will be difficult to judge the strength of schedules, but I think the voters did a good job judging the relative performance of the programs and quality wins booked.  And while the top 10 programs in each poll might be somewhat clear, the picture isn’t quite as clear as one moves thorugh the poll – there are many programs which are still undefeated.  We’ll certainly know more as the season moves on.

Great match-ups all over the place this weekend.  You’ve got Messiah traveling to Virginia to face Christopher Newport in a rematch of last season’s amazing quarterfinal.  Stevens is playing at Swarthmore, and Trinity is up against Hardin-Simmons and will try and get some momentum going after their surprising early loss.  Johns Hopkins has two matches and will try and come out at 6-0.  MIT is 3-1 and has 2 matches.  Ohio Wesleyan is 4-0 and plays in the addidas Classic.  Hobart is 3-0 with a couple of matches, and York playing North Carolina Wesleyan should be good.  And the NESCAC hasn’t even started yet!

On the women’s side, up and coming Puget Sound is in action, Wheaton (Ill.) is facing UW-Eau Claire, William Smith is hosting a solid tourney, including Johns Hopkins, and Chicago is 3-0 and faces a strong Illinois Wesleyan squad.  Lynchburg is facing Salisbury University, and Wartburg is up against St. Ben’s.

-> Team of the Week changes — We have a trade-out sponsor lined up for the D3football.com and D3hoops.com Team of the Week, something we’re not getting any money for but at least getting some exposure and use of some software that will make distributing info easier. We’re also moving the Team of the Week nomination form behind a login screen — we were getting too many spam or fan/parent nominations, plus, our new system will streamline the creation of the Team of the Week. Last year we lost the guy who had been doing the TOW for three or four years and I went back to choosing the team and assembling the pages myself. If you don’t have your D3sports login (what you use to nominate for our All-Americans and All-Region teams) contact me sooner rather than later. Those of you who have let coaches do the nominating will need to let me know if you want them to get usernames and passwords to access that function.

-> Football game day info — We would love to have all sorts of information on game day. Before the game, you can post a link to your game notes or preview through Presto, or post them in their entirety on our site with your D3sports login. The PrestoSports system is capable of handling in-progress scores, which will be updated automatically if you use Presto’s live stats software. Otherwise, you or someone on your game day crew can update scores as often as you like. Even if it’s just after every quarter, it’s of tremendous use to fans, who flock to our Scoreboard page all day long. After the game, we would love to have the final score and your game story, both of which can be posted through Presto’s space.

-> Audio/video/live stats links, football and basketball — if you have live video, live audio or live stats. We will publish your video links even if they are pay per view, so if you want to increase your audience, make sure you get the links on our scoreboard. That will require your PrestoSports login. You could email me your links and ask us to post them; however, we’ll do that on an as-time-permits basis. It’s going to be faster for you to post them yourself.

-> Basketball schedules — we have about two-thirds of the schedule on the site already. If you’re a Presto school or conference, remember we will get your schedule automatically when you post it for your conference. Please use “Site Notes” instead of “Notes” for notes about your games, whether they are homecoming, alumni day, senior day, whatever. That way those notes appear solely on your site and not on your opponents’ site (or ours).

-> Are you on Twitter? Are you following @d3hoops, @d3football, @d3baseball and are we following you? We follow every D-III athletics feed we can find and some of the general school feeds if they’re interesting. Please drop me a line if we aren’t following you. We’ll continue to retweet out interesting SID tweets, which will push people to your site instead of ours. Same with Facebook — D3football.com and D3hoops.com will become fans of your pages as we learn of them and hopefully yours will do the same.

-> D3soccer.com Top 25 — Some of you were approached about voting in our first soccer Top 25 poll. Jim Matson has been following up with SIDs on that list as well as coaches to make up the voter list. As more schools go with outside companies, we’ve lost a lot of the links we used to have from schools. I can provide a logo 125 px wide to fit on most templates, but have not included it with this email to keep the size down.
