ATN Podcast: Moving to the next level

One of the questions we’ve focused on in our slate of offseason podcasts is to ask coaches what it would take for their school to get to the next level. And we don’t mean Division II. Earlier this offseason we asked what the distance is like between Wabash and the elite teams in Division III. Or this time, what separates Stevenson from reaching the level of Wesley, the power in Division III in the Mid-Atlantic? What would it take for St. Thomas to join the Mount Union/Whitewater tier?

Guests this month include St. Thomas coach Glenn Caruso, Stevenson coach Ed Hottle and Howard Payne coach and athletic director Hunter Sims.

The Around the Nation Podcast is a weekly conversation (monthly in the offseason) between Pat Coleman and Keith McMillan covering the wide range of Division III football. It drops on Monday morning weekly throughout the season.

ATN Podcast: Couple upsets

There were a couple of upsets on Saturday, one practically unthinkable — yes, Grinnell, that’s you guys! — but the big winners of the first two weekends of Division III football were us, the fans.

Yes, that’s because we’ve been treated to a bunch of great early-season games, probably because few teams are willing to schedule the powers in the WIAC, NWC and ASC, so they are forced to play each other. Just look at the slate played by WIAC teams this past weekend for evidence.

Pat Coleman got to see the season opener for Mount Union, while Keith McMillan saw a D-III rivalry game more like Army-Navy than anything in Division III. They discuss those things and more in the Around the Nation Podcast.

ATN podcast: Implications already

Good week of games, Week 1, right?

Well, yes and no. We had some good games, especially with Willamette and UW-Stevens Point stepping up to the challenge and playing each other in a key early-season game, even though the NCAA last year made it clear such scheduling would not be rewarded.

Keith McMillan and Pat Coleman also talk about the interesting quarterback situations at Wesley and St. Thomas, two would-be national title contenders. They give their take on which conferences had particularly bad first weekends, congratulate a team that well outdid expectations (No. 219 beating No. 154), and a couple teams that almost did as well.
