Second 2013 NCAA regional rankings

The second NCAA regional rankings are now out.

Remember that regional rankings primarily take Division III games into account. Teams are listed with their Division III record first, followed by their overall record. For more information about the playoff format and how participants are determined, check out our FAQ.

Teams that have clinched playoff bids: ASC, Mary Hardin-Baylor; CC, Johns Hopkins; CCIW, North Central; ECFC, Gallaudet; E8, Ithaca; LL, Hobart; MIAC, Bethel; NACC, Concordia (Wis.); NCAC, Wittenberg; NWC, Linfield; SCIAC, Redlands; UMAC, St. Scholastica; USAC, Maryville; WIAC, UW-Whitewater.

EAST

Lebanon Valley and Rowan leapfrog Gallaudet, which was third last week. Brockport State moving into the rankings, instead of Endicott or Western Connecticut, who each have really low strength of schedule figures, explains Rowan’s boost. Also worth noting that Alfred and St. John Fisher, who clash on Saturday, are tied in the regional advisory committee’s view.

John Carroll’s win over Heidelberg helped it surpass Wittenberg, which it trailed in last week’s first set of regional rankings. Even though Wabash, Wheaton, Franklin and Heidelberg lost, there were no other teams in the North Region ready to move into the rankings. Albion, which faces Hope for the MIAA title in Week 11, is the closest.
SOUTH

 NOTES:

Millsaps moved in front of Wesley after its win over Centre, while Texas Lutheran falls from third last week to seventh. That’s bad news for the Bulldogs, who if they missed a Pool B bid, wouldn’t get to the table in Pool C until Thomas More went in first. The Saints play Washington & Jefferson in Week 11.

 NOTES:

The last four teams in the rankings are all teams that Bethel has beaten or is scheduled to play; the Royals face St. John’s in Week 11. Still, four regionally ranked opponents isn’t enough to get to the No. 1 spot ahead of UW-Whitewater. Meantime, St. Thomas moved in while Illinois College moved out, on the heels of a win over Concordia-Moorhead and IC’s loss to Cornell. PLU’s position behind Oshkosh and Platteville suggests that the winner of that Week 11 game is on the table for a Pool C bid before the Lutes.

How to use these regional rankings: If you are an at-large candidate, you want to be sure you are the top at-large candidate in your region. That will ensure you get discussed by the national committee and have a chance to be put in the field.

There are 24 automatic bids, three Pool B bids and five Pool C (true national at-large) bids. Selection Sunday is Nov. 17.

Being listed in these rankings is not a guarantee of selection to the playoffs. There is no guarantee an at-large team will be taken from each region.

  2. You’re correct. The comment is now struck through. I should have written that W&J needs to beat Waynesburg to close out the PAC, otherwise Thomas More can get in via Pool A.

  5. Even if Wesley wins this week, is their SOS strong enough to stay ahead of a weak SOS Thomas Moore at 9-1 and Maryville at 9-1 should they win? Both of their SOS’s are low, so it could be, but it’s possible. Especially the way Wesley has played recently. That SOS does take a hit this week against Alfred. But when it comes to TLU, the other two teams would have to lose, TLU to win to get them in.

    And UMHB has to take care of a Mississippi College team that has a chip as they leave the conference and DIII. The last time a team took on UMHB in their final ASC game before moving conferences, it didn’t go well. Just ask Coach Mumme…oh wait, he didn’t have his team shake hands.

  6. first two of the five group c off the board are winner of platteville or oshkosh and then PLU? Gonna be some nice teams left out that don’t even get to the board. Time for a little bracketollogy please…….

  7. maybe instead of bracketollogy, mindset to the pool c group and what order they enter the dance and how whats on the board after the selection of five, also who does not get on the board. process for division three is amazing…..

  8. How is St. Thomas ahead of St. John’s? They both have two losses and the Johnnies won AT St. Thomas. That’s pretty ridiculous. Also, IF St. John’s beats Bethel on Saturday, it would be a total farce if they didn’t get an at-large birth in the playoffs. Why? Because they’d have gone 8-2 (T-2nd in the MIAC) with wins over then #2 St. Thomas and #5 Bethel. Obviously it’s a moot point if Bethel wins in Collegeville, but I’m juts saying, if the Johnnies win, that’s a far better resume than anyone else on that list.

  9. In the East.. Do you think the winner of the Courage Bowl (St. john Fisher Vs. Alfred) will get the at large bid in the East? Or have both teams lost too much?

  11. St. Thomas is ahead of St. John’s because both teams have identical 7-2 records, however the Johnnies have not yet played #5 Bethel so their strength of schedule is weaker than St. Thomas. If St. John’s beats Bethel this weekend, they’ll be ahead of St. Thomas, but as things stand right now, the rankings are exactly what I would have expected given the strength of schedules of the respective schools.
