It’s game day. Let’s clinch!

Playoff spots will be going out left, right and center today, as we lock up a few more of the 23 automatic bids to the Division III football playoffs.

Plenty of action going on, detailed on the front page. Our own Gordon Mann is calling the Delaware Valley-Albright game, and if I weren’t headed to St. Thomas-Bethel myself, that’s what I’d be listening to. Click here to listen.

We list other potential clinchers on the front page. Wesley doesn’t have an AQ to play for but is going to be interesting this week, as quarterback Shane McSweeney’s status is in doubt.

  1. St. Thomas picks up a Bethel fumble (Logan Flannery) near midfield and turns it into a touchdown, hitting tight end Jake Friederichs for six, same play the Tommies scored on at St. John’s.

    PAT blocked. 6-0 UST 10:03 1st.

There is live video and live stats for this game, so I won’t update it constantly.

Also of note, Mount Union 21-0 over Otterbein after a quarter and Wesley leading Lake Erie 14-0 approaching halftime.

  2. Hobart winning 10-0 in the 4th qtr in one of the ugliest/worst LL games in years.

In other news, WPI is tied with Susquehanna 21-21 at the half. IF WPI can pull the upset, Union can clinch the LL title and the Pool A with a win at the USMMA later this afternoon.

  3. Bethel kicks a 36-yard field goal to cut the lead to 6-3. Royals then kick away from Fritz Waldvogel, kicking a pop-up that Colin Tobin catches on the run at the 30 and returns to the 37.

  4. Hobart shuts out RPI for the first time since 2000. Both teams really couldn’t do anything on offense – a combined 2 for 32 on third downs. Still, a nice send off for the 18 Statesmen seniors in their final game at the Boz. This class is 30-10 with 3 NCAA berths.

  5. Delaware Valley enters the fourth quarter with a commanding 31-0 lead on unbeaten and unranked Albright.

Looks like this will be another game which the D3football.com Top 25 nails and the AFCA whiffs on.

  6. Greg Morse came in for the final couple plays of the second quarter for St. Thomas. Looked much better than he did at St. John’s. Not sure what is up with Dakota Tracy, who has done a decent job here today so far. At the half, St. Thomas leads Bethel 13-10.

  7. Wheaton leads Illinois Wesleyan 7-0 at the half. IWU blocked a punt at the WC 21 with 22 sec left, but had no TOs left. They got to the 5 with clock running, tried to get the FG unit on but got blocked. Possibly didn’t get it off in time anyway. Radio guys couldn’t tell.

  8. Wheaton up on IWU at the half: 7-0. Very evenly played game thus far with both defenses playing well. 2 critical turnovers for IWU in the first half. 1 in their redzone leading to the Wheaton TD and 1 at the Wheaton 3 yard line. IWU also has a FG blocked to end the half. IWU up big time in TOP (7 minutes or so), but other than that a very tight game. Should be a good one…

  9. Ross Petterson picks off a Dakota Tracy pass for Bethel inside the Bethel 10-yard line. Petterson transferred from UST to BTHL. 13-10 10:20 3rd.

Two close games in the CCIW — Wheaton leading at IWU 7-0 and North Central winning at Augustana 24-20.

  10. UWW 17 UW-Oshkosh 0 at the half

Levell Coppage 18 rushes 111 yards 2 TD runs lead the Warhawks.
UWW scores on 3 of their 4 1st half possessions.
2 to 1 in time of possession for UWW.
    Beautiful weather in Whitewater.

  11. Wow… Wheaton fumbles on 1st play of 2nd half. IWU starts at Wheaton 16 yard line, but Wheaton holds them on downs.

Wheaton drives 86 yards, but then has to settle for FG. Wheaton up 10-0.

  12. Susquehanna 35 – WPI 21. With Union up 13-6 on the MMA at the half, the LL title looks like its on the line next Saturday.

  13. Ithaca destorys Alfred and SJFC crushes Pool C hopeful Springfield. Really shows the importance of SOS and OOC SOS.

  14. Ugh… roughing the passer, followed by a long TD pass by IWU and just like that… less than a minute later it is now Wheaton 10, IWU 7.

  15. Make that 10-6. IWU misses PAT. Kicking game by both teams is not good. 1 blocked punt, 2 missed FGs and a missed PAT.

  16. Wheaton fumbles AGAIN after ensuing kickoff. IWU with ball in Wheaton territory. For a clean, well-played 1st half, 2nd half has been completely opposite.

  17. Pat – I think you meant DVC was in not Albright (who btw play Leb Val next weekend in what could be a “Pool C” play-off game)

  18. Duh, thanks, I fixed it.

  19. IWU driving again… at Wheaton 18. Starting IWU QB, Ladd goes down early in the game. 2nd string QB (Rooney) is killing Wheaton with his scrambling, something Wheaton probably didn’t prepare for.

  21. Key game for potential share of CCIW championship. Your opponent has a 3rd and 1 at your 10 yard line with 1:13 left. You call a timeout for figure out how to get a stop.

But then you get penalized for having 12 men on the field? How can you possibly do that? That is crazy! Game virtually over.

  22. And according to live stats, literally over: IWU 20, Wheaton 17. North Central is winning at Augustana so IWU will have to beat North Park to clinch the automatic bid next week.

  23. Game over… IWU 20, Wheaton 17. Looking like IWU will get the AQ since they have North Park next week and North Park has lost 67 straight conference games.

  29. The South Region goes this way.

DePauw is in. They are no worse than co-champs in the SCAC, and they have the tie-breaker over Millsaps.

Mississippi College hosts 0-9 Texas Lutheran to clinch the ASC bid.

Averett hosts conference leading NCWC. If they beat NCWC, then they will be co-champs and get the USASouth AQ bid on the tie-breaker.

Centennial Conference — Johns Hopkins goes to McDaniel with the chance to clinch the AQ. If JHU loses and Dickinson wins, Dickinson wins the AQ.

ODAC — Randolph-Macon hosts conference leading Hampden-Sydney. A RMC win earns a co-championship and the AQ. H-SC can win the AQ in “The Game”.

  31. Pool C is going to be interesting this year. Conventional wisdom would tell you that UMHB should be a shoe in. I definitely feel that they are by far one of the best 32 teams. However, when you look at the numbers it is not as clear cut. In addition to UMHB, I see StThomas, Coe, StNorbert, Dickinson, Wabash, and Albright as leading candidates. UMHB’s strength of schedule and strength of victory is below all of these. In addition Ohio Northern, Northcentral, and Wheaton have two losses but have very strong profiles otherwise. Only 6 teams can get in. To me it seems that UMHB could be on the outside looking in. What do you think Pat?
